One day, a strange incident occurred in the city where discarded garbage began to combine and merge in various places. Gradually, these disparate pieces fused together, growing larger and more complex.
However, TPC determined through their investigation that it was just ordinary garbage and decided to observe the situation without interference. Upon seeing this, one man exclaimed, "It's a rebellion of discarded trash!"...
In the script of the preparation draft, the provisional title of this episode is "Yumenokatamari" (夢のかたまり, Yumenokatamari), with the difference being that the title is written in hiragana form.[1]
Originally, this episode was intended to be directed by Akio Jissoji, and the script had already been written. However, due to scheduling conflicts, the directorial duties were reassigned to Mitsunori Hattori, a member of the film production team "Kodai group" affiliated with Jissoji.[2]
In the initial draft, this episode was originally numbered as episode 38, but due to a swap in airing order with the originally planned episode 37, "Monster Drama," its number was changed to its current designation.[3]
Super GUTS Reduce Waste Campaign
In the opening of the episode, the "Super GUTS・Reduce Waste Campaign" outlines ten rules, which include:
Always use both sides of copy paper.
Recharge batteries before using them again.
Remove clips from documents before disposing of them.
Newspapers and magazines can be shared; avoid buying the same items repeatedly.
Try not to use paper cups.
Avoid disposing of bulky trash without compressing it first.
Refuse excessive packaging at the purchasing department.
Bring your own chopsticks when going to the cafeteria.
Those who do not sort waste are not human.
In this episode, the location "INTERIOR SPACE Aya", which served as the setting for the home of Ippei Baba in Gridman the Hyper Agent, makes an appearance.
Due to constraints in time and budget, the depiction of Yumenokatamari’s growth process had to be significantly compressed. Originally, each stage of the production would have taken about three days, but in the end, the process was simplified to fit the schedule and resources.
Regarding the casting, Minori Terada was the first actor selected for the episode. To contrast with his character, Hattori ultimately chose Pepe Hozumi, whom he had known since his time working on Super Robot Red Baron. Hattori noted that the decision to cast Hoseki was rooted in trust in his acting abilities.
For the special effects, Hattori mentioned that his previous experience as a special effects supervisor on Monkey was invaluable during the production of this episode. This experience helped streamline the effects work despite its complexity.
Speaking about Terada’s character, Yanase, Hattori remarked that such a personality exists in real life. He himself had been introduced to experts dealing with waste management, and their demeanor closely resembled Yanase’s portrayal in the episode.
As for Yanase’s "house," it was actually filmed at the real residence of a waste management expert. When art director Uchida visited the location for research, the expert generously offered, "You can film here." This allowed the crew to shoot the interior scenes in a real-world setting, while the exterior shots were constructed on an open set at Toho Studios.
