Ultraman Omega (ウルトラマンオメガ, Urutoraman Omega) is the titular hero of Ultraman Omega.[1][2][3] He fell to Earth in a human form with no memories of his past, taking up the name Sorato Okida. Compelled to face kaiju by a mysterious, subconscious duty, he defends the planet while forming a bond with the humans.

Conception[]

Etymology[]

Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet.

Design[]

During the design of Omega, director Masayoshi Takesue aimed for a strong visual impact. Although red-faced Ultras like Ultraman Zearth existed before, such designs were rare in the franchise. Takesue wanted Omega's appearance to clearly show he belongs to a different race from previous Ultras.[4][5]

Designer Masayuki Gotoh explained that from the start, Takesue emphasized Omega should not resemble an Ultra from Nebula M78, aiming instead for a completely new image. Takesue specifically requested a red face and a simplified look, so Gotoh avoided armor details on the limbs, opting for a minimalist design.[4] The team adjusted the balance of red and silver on the face multiple times. One version had an entirely red face including the mouth, another featured a wider mouth with a strong contour reminiscent of Batman, and they also drew inspiration from Ultraseven's facial design. Initially sharp, the eyes were softened after revisions for a more balanced look. The eyes used the same fabrication method as Ultraman Z's, and after prototyping several versions with LSS's support, the design from Z was chosen as it fit Omega best.[4]

Regarding the head, since Omega carries a Slugger, Gotoh aimed to make him the first Ultraman since Zero to have a detachable Slugger in his normal form. Unlike Z whose Sluggers are not physically removable, Gotoh devised a new mounting system attaching the Slugger opposite to Ultraseven's design direction, blending the original Ultraman head with Slugger elements. Early designs tested silver painting, but the final version was curved, thick, and heavy-looking.[4]

The Color Timer's lighting was another focus. Takesue wanted a never-before-seen visual effect, developing the idea of “the universe unfolding from the chest.” The illuminated area changes with the viewing angle, achieved by LSS through a multilayer internal structure, including a perforated light filter and a transparent spiral-textured component, creating depth lighting. The perforation pattern and spiral texture were finalized after many iterations.

Omega's forehead features a slight protrusion based on the idea that everything above it—including the silver parts where the Slugger mounts—are additional equipment made later. Though unofficial, this concept shows these parts are specialized gear for the Omega Slugger. Gotoh compared it to a fighter pilot's helmet, and the raised contour lines near the ears also reflect this idea.[4]

History[]

Ultraman Omega[]

Falling to Earth[]

OmegaIntro

Ultraman Omega raids the structure behind the Moon

Ultraman Omega attacked a massive structure hidden behind the dark side of the Moon, encountering a horde of Vugsect which had infested the place. He fought off many of the smaller ones before a larger Vugsect appeared, forcing Omega to use his Reticulute Beam to destroy it and a glowing core in the structure. With his mission seemingly complete, he took off to space but was suddenly struck down by a beam launched at him, causing him to fall to the Earth, losing his memories in the process.

Remembering nothing, Omega took on the form of a human even as he fell, and was spotted by onlookers who suspected that an alien had fallen to Earth. He wandered around, curious about all he saw, and eventually ended up at Kosei Hoshimi's workplace. Omega stuck around with the reluctant human follower, observing the Earth and human interactions, until the Kaiju Graim attacked, which he somehow recognised and got his memory to jog slightly as he knew the monsters' time of awakening had come. Remembering that he could transform, Omega changed into his true form and slew the beast. Here Comes an Alien

To change back to his true form, Sorato performs a chopping motion from his forehead, causing the Omega Slugger to manifest and float around him, which he then grasps. He then takes the Omega Meteo from the pendant around his neck and inserts it inside the Omega Slugger, before pulling down on the bottom to unfold its wings, swinging it in an arc then raising it towards the sky.[6][7]
