Ultraman Blazar Ultraman Series, created by Tsuburaya Productions.[3][4] It is the first in the franchise for each episode to be released with English, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Taiwanese Mandarin, Thai, Indonesian, Malay and Hindi dubs within a week of their original airing in Japan.[3]
is the 33rd entry of theProduction[]

The series is directed by Kiyotaka Taguchi[5][6], known for his work on Ultraman X, Ultraman Orb, and Ultraman Z. The head writer is Keigo Koyanagi, who was previously in charge of military adviser and scripting for Ultraman Z. Both Taguchi and Koyanagi serve as the series compositors. This installment was uniquely entrusted with the task of building an entirely new 'hard science fiction" anthology series from scratch—one grounded in a strong sense of realism.
The central theme of the series is "communication." It explores the importance of dialogue in overcoming conflicts that arise from differences in position and ideology: between humans and Ultraman, between humans and kaijus or aliens, between commanders and their warriors, as well as between parents and children. The narrative emphasizes cooperation as a means to resolve these tensions, all while anchoring the story in deeply human drama that portrays emotional responses to the many hardships of the real world.[7][8][9]
One of the most distinctive features of this series is its focus on a team captain as the protagonist—an approach adopted for the first time in the franchise.[10] The setting also breaks away entirely from the typical structure of the New Generation Hero series. Notably, it introduces a new method of changing Ultraman's powers without the need for collecting transformation items, avoids reusing kaijus from previous series, and for the first time features no guest appearances from characters of earlier New Generation Hero series. As such, this series is considered to exist in a completely independent universe.[10]
"From the very beginning, we declared that communication would be the central theme. Whether it's war on a global scale or arguments within a family, or even small quarrels between friends—it all stems from breakdowns in communication. I felt that if we tackled this theme now, we could really portray something meaningful."
- ―Kiyotaka Taguchi[11]
Development[]
Initial planning for the series began in the summer of 2021.[12] At the time, both of the previous Ultraman Series had incorporated elements from older entries, leading some fans to initially speculate that this installment might be a tribute to 1998 TV series Ultraman Gaia, which had not yet received a direct homage. However, when director Taguchi was approached by Tsuburaya Productions to serve as main director of the next series, he expressed strong reservations, stating: "I don't want to be the main director of a "New Generation Gaia"." He explained further:[12]
"Ultraman Gaia is incredible in so many ways. I came to the conclusion that, no matter how hard I tried, it would be physically impossible to match it."
- ―Kiyotaka Taguchi[12]

The first episode, "First Wave," shows a nighttime battle in Ikebukuro and quickly became a hot topic, topping Twitter's trends on the day it aired.[13]
Instead, Taguchi proposed a different concept: the story would open on a battlefield in Ikebukuro, already ravaged by kaiju, with the defense team deploying via an airborne drop.[12]. Tsuburaya agreed, recognizing that the Ultraman Series needed a bold new direction.[12] They approved Taguchi's vision, which marked the start of a new creative process focused on doing something entirely different. Taguchi pitched several proposals: not to use powers from previous Ultra heroes, not to rely on those powers for form changes, and to introduce entirely new kaijus. He also took charge of overall series compositor, working alongside head writer Koyanagi and chief producer Tsugumi Kitaura to build the project from the ground up.[12]
According to Taguchi, the concept for Ultraman Blazar was influenced by contemporary social and global issues. In particular, the widespread anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russo-Ukrainian War made him reflect on how these crises might stem from a lack of communication.[11][9] He wanted the series to reflect elements of real-world society, and as a result, grounded the narrative in a sense of realism. The protagonist was designed to be a relatable figure—someone with a family, working in a mid-level managerial position—emphasizing the realistic portrayal of characters. Compared to other New Generation Hero series, this series placed greater focus on military themes and hard science fiction elements, aiming to depict how such elements might coexist with reality and creating a grounded atmosphere that reflects the real world.
Taguchi also revealed that after finishing his work on Ultraman Z, Koyanagi was invited to write for Blazar. Initially, Koyanagi considered watching all prior Ultraman Series for reference, but Taguchi encouraged him to write without any preconceived notions. Once the decision was made to center the story on the defense team and kaijus, Taguchi emphasized that Ultraman is, at its core, a collection of engaging episodic tales. however, within that framework, a deeper narrative is always present. From then on, the team began regularly convening in a special conference room—nicknamed their "secret base"—where they planned the structure of the series in detail.[12]

In the series, the defense team "SKaRD" is seen as a special forces unit dedicated to handling monster threats.
Concept[]
The idea of making the captain the protagonist was actually conceived during the production of Ultraman Z. While discussing the concept of the defense team with head writer Koyanagi, the creators concluded that it would be unrealistic for just five people to solve every problem. This led to defining the team in the new series as a "special forces unit," and eventually to the decision to focus the story on a single squad within the Global Guardian Force. From there, the idea of placing the captain at the center of the narrative was solidified.[14][8]
The series also took full advantage of having Taguchi as the main director. Tsuburaya Productions devoted all of its latest technical resources to the production of episode 1, ensuring a consistent visual quality throughout the series. While maintaining the bright and optimistic tone characteristic of previous entries, the narrative also incorporates contemporary social themes reflective of the 2020s.
Ultraman Blazar was designed by Masayuki Gotoh. Although the design philosophy of 2022 film Shin Ultraman emphasized a "return to basics," Blazar aimed to avoid similarities by starting with the concept of Ultraman as a living being. The creative team developed the titular hero with a backstory: Blazar is part of a warrior race that hunts kaijus for a living. The overall design emerged from this foundation.[14][10]
In the initial project proposal, Taguchi even wrote "abolish the collectible item system of past Ultras," but he later reconsidered, thinking some form of collection element might still be needed. One early concept involved an "Ultraman who collects kaiju DNA"—after defeating a kaiju, Blazar would seal its energy into a DNA capsule and use it for weaponized transformations.[14] This was the origin of the "hunter-type Ultraman" concept. However, it was later suggested that this might feel too brutal, leading to a more balanced version of the idea. Even so, the physical and vocal characterization of Blazar was carefully crafted through discussions with suit actor Hideyoshi Iwata and action coordinator Daisuke Terai, resulting in the finalized combat style and roars for the hero.[14][10]

Earth Garon is the primary bipedal kaiju-type kaiju robot operated by SKaRD in the series.
From the early stages of product planning, transformation devices and Earth Garon were developed in collaboration with Bandai. Unlike Ultraman Trigger: New Generation Tiga and Ultraman Decker, which featured CG fighter jets, this series opted to go with a full-on robot. Since few robot-type kaiju from past series could rival the popularity of Sevenger, the team decided to create a brand-new robot. With support from Bandai's designers, Earth Garon was realized as a completely new creation.[14][10]
Due to the limited preparation time, casting for the series was conducted in a targeted manner rather than through a large-scale audition process. The team focused on actors who could perform naturally and convincingly within a realistic setting. Tomoya Warabino was cast as the main protagonist, Gento Hiruma. Hideyoshi Iwata, who had previously worked as a suit actor in various New Generation Hero series, was again cast as the suit actor for Ultraman Blazar. In this series, Iwata also provided the roars and vocal effects for the hero.[8]
The series features a significant number of new kaiju. Given the limited pool of existing kaiju available for reuse, the production team recognized the necessity of creating fresh designs. Directors involved in the series were encouraged to introduce new kaijus in their respective episodes. The design department even compiled a detailed list indicating which kaiju were available for use and which were not.[15]
In contrast to previous New Generation entries—where popular "celebrity kaiju" often appeared repeatedly—Ultraman Blazar took a different approach. Concerned that excessive reuse of familiar kaijus might lead to audience fatigue, the team intentionally shifted focus toward showcasing new kaiju, establishing a creative direction centered on kaiju.[15][8]

The series' production press conference was highlighted by the reveal of new kaiju.[16][17]
Principal photography for the series and its feature film, Ultraman Blazar The Movie: Tokyo Kaiju Showdown, began in October 2022 and wrapped up in May 2023. The first teaser trailer for the series was released on February 23, 2023, following the ending theme of the theatrical release Ultraman Decker Finale: Journey to Beyond, distributed by Shochiku and TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION.
Filming[]
The series was officially announced on April 21, 2023.[3][4] As with Ultraman Decker, the new series was introduced via a live online presentation on June 12, 2023, where the new project was revealed.[18] A production press conference was also held the same day at the 2023 Tokyo Toy Show, where it was announced that all filming, including the tokusatsu scenes, had been completed.
Synopsis[]
Established in 1966 by nations all around the world in response to the worldwide outbreak of Kaiju disasters, the Global Guardian Force (GGF) deals with Kaiju and extraterrestrial life forms' attacks on Earth.
Today, Earth sees continued destruction of nature and rapid rise in global warming. One night, a space crustacean Kaiju Bazanga appears. The GGF's cleanup operation is unsuccessful, and the special forces led by Gento Hiruma find themselves in a desperate situation. This is when a mysterious giant emerges from light. It is the unidentified humanoid alien that has been rumored among astronauts for decades, code-named "Ultraman".
Later, Gento is summoned to the command center, where he is officially appointed as the commander of SKaRD, short for Special Kaiju Reaction Detachment, a team that had been secretly formed. Leading a special unit that pilots a giant Kaiju-type robot artillery, Earth Garon, to respond with Kaiju disasters. While Gento is ordered to investigate the Ultraman from the Battle of Bazanga, to determine whether it is a threat that needs to be eliminated or not, he has a flashback of a faraway galaxy—a shred of memory of a blazar.
"I'll go."
Captain Gento, shrouded by Ultraman Blazar's light, with the unique members of the newly organized SKaRD, throws themselves into battles against the Kaiju with dauntless courage and an unwavering sense of justice![3][4]

Trivia[]
- Like the previous series, Ultraman Blazar was first announced in a post-credits teaser at the end of Ultraman Decker Finale: Journey to Beyond.
- The same teaser was eventually uploaded to YouTube on March 25, 2023 at 4:21 am (JST), referencing the titular character's home world.
- This series opts to use "kaiju" in its English subtitles and promotion instead of translating it to "monster".
- Unlike the upload on YouTube, the English dub on Ultraman Connection replaces on-screen Japanese text with English text, such as the main cast and characters in the opening, the eyecatches, title cards, and SKaRD's acronym in episode 2.
- In a TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION interview, main director Kiyotaka Taguchi sees Ultraman Blazar as ideologically similar to Ultraman Gaia, in the sense that both shows break away from the world view of the previous two works and aim to portray "hard science fiction".[60]
- This is the first series in many years to feature mostly new Kaiju, with Blazar only having one form being a deliberate exchange for more kaiju suits.
- According to Taguchi, the title "Blazar" had already been proposed before the 2013 broadcast of Ultraman Ginga. At the time, he submitted a very conservative project proposal advocating a "return to the roots" concept, but it was ultimately rejected.[61]
