Conception[]
Etymology[]
During the initial planning stage, the key design notes of the new Ultraman included elements of "rainbows" and "simplicity". But on director Takanori Tsujimoto's guidance, designer Masayuki Gotoh decided to pursue his own vision of a "Showa-inspired, simple-style" Ultraman, scrapping the idea of a "rainbow-colored" Ultraman entirely. However, what stuck in the final design draft was the image of a "circle of light" (as seen in Arc's Arc Finalize), in other words, an arc, which is where Arc's name was derived from.
In Ultraman Arc, Shu Ishido gave Arc his name after the arc of light left behind by the Ultra. However, the codename "Ultraman" had been used by the GDF since his first appearance, a portmanteau derived from Arc being "ultra big and strong" and having an appearance that took after mankind.[5] The GDF were also involved in the naming of the Arc Armors: the Solis Armor was named after the Latin word for the Sun due to the Sun-like chest piece and the armor's orange coloration[6], while the Luna Armor was named after the Latin word for the Moon as the saucer on his hand resembled a full moon.[7] Apart from the GDF's official explanation, the fact remains that "solis" in Solis Armor, sensu stricto, means "of the sun", which is the genitive case of Latin sol "(the) sun". Therefore the Solis Armor literally signifies "the armor of the sun", while the Luna Armor exactly represents "the moon armor" because luna is a Latin word for "(the) moon" in the nominative case, whose genitive is lunae "of the moon".
At an earlier stage of development, the production team considered naming the titular Ultra "Ultraman Image" [8]
, as the central theme of the series was envisioned to be "imagination."Design[]
- Ultraman Arc
As the main director for this work, Tsujimoto wanted his Ultraman to follow the design philosophy of the Showa era. He noticed that Masayuki Gotoh's past design works primarily used the original Ultraman as a template while adding many striking design elements, so this time Tsujimoto wanted Gotoh to create his own Ultraman from scratch with a stylistic emphasis on "simplicity", with specific references to the original Ultraman and Ultraman Jack. The result of this was an Ultra with minimal armor, relying only on the boldness of a red-and-silver body, and a face inspired by Ultraman's C-Type mask with Ultraseven's eyes (initially, C-Type eyes were considered, but Tsujimoto felt that it did not look good and ultimately scrapped the idea).[9]
During the design process, black was added to Arc's palette to break up the colors and coordinate a better impression of the body. A breastplate in the style of Ultraseven's protectors were included in the initial design, but gradually shrunk until it became a small engraving around the Color Timer. Later, this and the Ultra's body patterns were edited slightly at the request of Tsujimoto and the producers after they found it a bit too simplistic, giving birth to Arc's current design. In addition, giving to the "rainbow" concept planned at the beginning, Gotoh wanted the mask to emit seven colors of light, which eventually became the two luminous bands stretching along the sides of Arc's head.[9]
During the molding process, the first iteration of Arc's face mask posed problems for the suit actors, as the light source was installed in a way that reflected directly into the actor's vision. To tackle this, the sculpting team added black lines underneath the eyelids not just for the suit actor to see out of the mask, but also to disperse the reflection of light. This was inspired by the eye black worn by baseball players.[9]
- Arc Armors
The introduction of the Arc Armors was inspired by the production of Ultraman Blazar, where form changes were sacrificed in exchange for new Kaiju suits. Tsujimoto was impressed and wanted to introduce a gallery of Showa-inspired Kaiju, so he chose to let Arc don armors to avoid creating new suits for form changes and thereby reducing the number of new Kaiju that could be introduced. The Arc Armors were inspired by Ultraman X's Cyber Armors, and obscured the Color Timer completely after learning from the production difficulties of Ultraman Blazar's Firdran Armor, which had the tendency to shift off-center during shoots. Leg armor was also considered, but this required the creation of new suits, so the idea was scrapped.[9]
Originally, design prototypes for the Arc Armors included military vehicles such as fighter planes and tanks, but these were viewed as "too aggressive" for the intended demographic and did not fit the style of the work. Hence, the designers turned to celestial bodies instead, and chose the Sun and the Moon as the basis for the Arc Armors.
Tsujimoto explained that the concept of using the Sun and Moon as themes was originally proposed by the toy development team. He also felt that for children, the idea of armor inspired by the Sun and Moon would be a natural and appealing concept. Additionally, the design approach for this series was to create armor that could not only function independently but also combine into a single, unified entity.[8]
Although the two armor sets were traditionally defined by the attributes of "power" and "speed," Tsujimoto believed that strictly adhering to conventional design principles would be uninteresting. To add depth, certain limitations were introduced: for instance, while Solis Armor significantly enhanced strength, it also reduced speed and even restricted the ability to fly. A key objective of the series was to emphasize the "base form," so Tsujimoto requested that the scriptwriters and directors incorporate a restriction where, in decisive moments, Arc would have to remove the armor and rely on his finishing beam attack to defeat his opponents.[8]
The design of the Galaxy Armor was established during early discussions on selecting a planetary theme. Initially, proposals included Earth, Venus, Mars, and other planets from the solar system. However, choosing a single planet was considered too conventional. As a result, the team decided to integrate elements from all the planets in the solar system, leading to the creation of the Galaxy Armor.[8]
Initially, Gotoh proposed an alternate weapon design for the Galaxy Armor: assembling parts of the armor into a giant sword. However, since the Arc Eye Sword already existed, the team decided to avoid redundancy and first shifted toward developing a bow-and-arrow-type weapon. Eventually, the design evolved into a short-range tonfa-like weapon, which became the current Arc Galaxer. The original concept for the giant sword that was ultimately scrapped can still be seen in the early design sketches.[8]
The Saturn Armor, which appeared in the stage, was essentially designed using unused concepts from the Galaxy Armor.[8]
History[]
Pre-Ultraman Arc[]

Rution fighting Monogelos after crash-landing on Earth
In a distant galaxy light-years away, the advanced civilizations of a certain star system faced the prospect of total annihilation due to the expansion of the star Sonia. The leaders of each planet assembled to discuss this matter, with one of them named Ze Su advocating for the use of the Ze Su Gate, a wormhole which would channel Sonia's excess energy into other galaxies, but problematically, one of the predicted discharge points led directly to Earth. While most disagreed on sacrificing another civilization for their own, Ze Su refused to oblige and activated the gate, forcing the leaders to send the giant of light Rution to seal the end of the gate and save Earth. Flash of the Past
Embarking on his mission, Rution was pursued by the galactic beast Monogelos, who had been sent by Ze Su to stop Rution from interfering with their plans. Though Rution managed to successfully seal the gate, he was met with resistance by Monogelos, as both giants fell to the Earth at Mt. Shishio. The battle between Rution and Monogelos had the giant of light blow off the monster's horn in the process, landing on the mountain and becoming known as the Monohorn later. However, Yuma's parents both died in the fight between the giants as rubble crushed them, and Yuma only managed to survive because Rution merged with the young boy to save his life. Unleash Your Imagination!

Rution gains his current appearance by watching over Yuma
Rution's inability to save Yuma's parents haunted him every day since then. In addition to that, his sealing of the Gate, the battle with Monogelos and then his subsequent merger with Yuma caused Rution to lose most of his energy and go dormant within Yuma for the next sixteen years, watching him grow up. Experiencing Yuma's imagination of the "strongest hero" and its related powers and items became a source of strength for Rution, whose body and powers also changed to reflect them. Observing the Earth throughout Yuma's life, he grew to love the planet and the humans on it.
However, Rution knew that his sealing of the Ze Su Gate would not last forever and that it would come undone again someday. Flash of the Past The Wandering Future

Re-emergence[]
"Yuma. You and I are one and the same. Your thoughts are my power... Now is the time. The time I can fight in this world is limited. Unleash your imagination."
- ―Rution's first words to Yuma

Rution grants the Arc Ariser and Arc Cube to Yuma
After sixteen years, Ze Su sent Digelos to Earth to search for the sealed Ze Su Gate, which prompted Rution to contact Yuma in an inverted world where time was stopped. He granted Yuma the Arc Cube and Arc Ariser, transformation items made from his childhood imagination, so that he may transform into Arc and fight to protect the Earth. Unleash Your Imagination! While the news simply reported his presence as "the mysterious giant", the GDF member Shu Ishido gave him the name Ultraman Arc, which stuck with him ever since. Arc to the Future In the fight against several other monsters who were drawn to Hoshimoto City because of the Ze Su Gate's energy, Arc gained the Arc Eye Sword and the Solis and Luna Armors created through Yuma's imagination, which proved useful in his many subsequent battles.
The Onyx Crisis[]
Ze Su eventually sent Sweed, one of his agents, to the Earth to find Rution and extract the location of the sealed Ze Su Gate from him. To that end, Sweed attacked Yuma and Shu, though Arc protected them and brought them to safety. At that time, he also explained to Yuma the circumstances behind his appearance on Earth in the first place, and the danger that the Ze Su Gate - then codenamed the "Onyx" by the GDF - could present if unsealed.
Even so, Sweed managed to find them and got the location of the Onyx directly from Arc's memories and managed to reveal it. Yuma and Arc tried to do something about it, but they were left exhausted after Sweed drained their energy which resulted in them losing to Sweed's controlled monster, Zadime. Flash of the Past
"These past 16 years have been a journey in which I've learned about Earthlings through you. Their strength. Their kindness. Their frailty. The more I learned, the more precious this planet became to me. It was a strange feeling that went beyond my original mission. And your imagination when thinking about the future... That imagination gave my wounded body strength. It gave me this form and the powers with which to fight. It was all thanks to you, Yuma. [...] I wish to protect that which you do! I don't have a surefire way to save the Earth. But let's not give up! Let's find the future together!"
- ―Arc encouraging Yuma to fight against the odds and save the Earth from the Onyx

Yuma and Arc resolve to fight together to protect the Earth
After Arc's defeat, Shu brought Yuma back to the safety of the SKIP base but Sweed was able to project herself there, remaining invisible to everyone except Yuma and YouPi's electronic sensors. Sweed tried to persuade Yuma to give up and stop fighting, revealing that the Ze Su Gate was always fated to reopen and that the Earth was doomed regardless of what he did. Yuma conversed with Arc about the same, and the latter admitted that what Sweed said was the truth but did not want to tell Yuma earlier to prevent him from falling into despair. Instead, Yuma insisted on reuniting with Arc and doing their best to prevent calamity from befalling the planet they both loved.
Arc reappeared, determined to get rid of the Onyx through any means, but his efforts were impeded by Zadime and Sweed. Fortunately, assistance from YouPi and Shu managed to get Sweed to momentarily flinch and stop restraining Rution. With the Onyx dangerously close to being opened, Arc found himself at a loss for action until Yuma encouraged him to unleash his imagination. Coming up with an idea, he charged at the nearly-opened Onyx and took it into himself, transforming it into the Galaxy Armor. Using his new power, Arc subsequently defeated Zadime and blew Sweed away using his Galaxer Finalize. With Sweed defeated and the Onyx gone, it seemed that the threat to the Earth had finally ended. The Wandering Future
The Infernal Dark Shogun's Invasion[]
Unfortunately, when Zadime's tail was blown off its corpse, its dimension-transcending powers tore a hole in reality that led to another dimension. This attracted the attention of Hellnarak the Infernal Dark Shogun, who was determined to establish a monster shogunate on Arc's world by sending various ghostly monsters starting with Mogusion, who Arc could not attack normally due to it being a ghost. Zangill, himself a ghost who refused to submit to Hellnarak, came to Arc's aid by bestowing his Arc Eye Sword with the ability to slice through ghosts through special soundwaves. The Light of Fear
Zangill requested Yuma and Arc's cooperation in fighting against Hellnarak as he did not have much time left before he faded away again, attempting to teach Yuma the technique of the Demon Slicing Meteor Sword to be able to defeat his spectral opponents, which Arc was later able to make use of against a horde of revived Taganular. His ability to learn the technique left Zangill satisfied and he was able to pass on peacefully after having a cup of coffee from Shu. Demon Slicing Meteor Sword
Hellnarak's invasion continued over the coming days, with near non-stop fighting from Arc and the GDF against the ghostly monster army, which they had learned to counter by replicating the special sound produced by Zangill's sword to corporealize their enemies. Shu and the GDF managed to come up with a proposal to close the interdimensional rift by getting Arc's cooperation to use the Onyxium particles produced by his Galaxy Armor, but in the middle of the operation, a Bazanga attacked. After dealing with the monster, Hellnarak itself attempted to invade but Arc pushed it back into the dimensional rift, going through it himself and ending up in another world. Arc Cooperation Request

Blazar gives his energy to Arc
There, Hellnarak continued to attack the parallel Earth but was opposed by the GGF along with their Earth Garon and the help of Ultraman Blazar, who had been fighting Hellnarak and its minions without success so far. Arc came to Blazar's assistance in the fight against Hellnarak, shooting his Arc Finalize at the monster just after Blazar had thrown his Spiral Burrade at it. The combined attack proved powerful enough to shatter Hellnarak's outer hide for the first time, exposing its weak point and forcing the creature to once again retreat through the dimensional rift to survive. Before throwing Arc back through the rift where he came from, Blazar gave him some of his energy.
Due to differences in the flow of time between dimensions, Arc had been gone from his home universe for four days in the time it took him to return, during which Hellnarak went on a rampage and forced a mass evacuation of Hoshimoto City. Arc fought against the creature once more and struggled until the leftover energy given to him by Blazar manifested as the Blazar Cube, allowing Arc to unleash his Arc Spiral Burrade followed by his Arc Finalize, which destroyed Hellnarak for good and erased all of its eggs across the two universes. The Transcending Wish
The Clash of Light and Evil[]
Shortly after Hellnarak's invasion, a space sage named Sascal, an Alien Diggle, came to Earth looking for Yuma, knowing about his connection to Rution and wanting to test his worthiness of such a great power. Sascal had devised three tests for Yuma, and threatened him with the possibility of losing Arc's powers should he fail them, putting him into a time loop with three diverging paths beginning from the same moment.
The first test had a man named Motoki Mukawa approach SKIP about a Doglf named Mugon that he knew from childhood, saying that something was wrong with the monster and that he needed the help of experts; the GDF would probably see Mugon as a threat and kill it since the event coincided with the recent disappearance of livestock in the area. They turned him down at first, but later reversed their decision. After arriving at the site where Mugon was, a pair of Shagong emerged and attacked Mugon, intending to devour it. Yuma transformed into Arc to defeat the two Shagongs with Mugon's help, but afterwards, Mugon passed away from old age. Learning that one takes imagination and information in order to make peace between humans and monsters, Yuma passed Sascal's first test while also triggering the time loop.
Next, Gartura, an alien plant, was brought to SKIP for examination after it was found at a building construction site. The alien plant took possession of one of the SKIP members and sowed distrust among them, but it was eventually found out that it was inside Rin when Shu made them all drink coffee as the plant was weak to caffeine. In the struggle against the possessed Rin, Yuma transformed into Arc again at human size and fought Rin, but was at a disadvantage until You-Pi blasted more coffee grounds at Rin, causing her to cough the plant out of her. Arc was about to fire his Arc Finalize at the alien plant, but Rin stepped in and shot at it with the Elemagun instead, destroying Gartura. Yuma passed Sascal's test by admitting that he should have stayed calmer and exercised better judgment during tense situations, triggering the final time loop.
For the final test, Alien Repo launched an invasion on the Earth, several years after their first attempt, which failed as Shu and his colleague Jin Kiuchi put a stop to them. The alien sent Zerogelos to siphon energy from the Angie 1 generator while the alien itself targeted SKIP, knocking them all out with a special gas. The alien took the Arc Ariser from Yuma and used it on Shu, forcefully transforming him into a rampaging Guil Arc, a dark copy of Ultraman Arc. Yuma gained another Arc Ariser from a mysterious man, allowing him to transform into Arc again and fight Guil Arc. The pain he felt while fighting his friend caused Arc to shed a tear, which dropped onto Guil Arc's hand and brought Shu back to his senses. Meanwhile, Alien Repo absorbed Zerogelos and transformed into Repodios, forcing the two Arcs to work together against it as Repodios used its gravitational powers to take them and the power generator into space. They struggled against the monster, with Guil Arc being knocked off the platform and Arc losing his Galaxy Armor, until Guil Arc returned, donning the armor that Arc lost, using superspeed to rotate the platform rapidly to disorient Repodios. Arc then put on the Solis Armor as Guil Arc returned, and the two finished off Repodios by slicing it from two directions.
With Repodios gone, its gravitational powers also waned, and the chunk of the city was about to plunge back to the Earth, potentially causing massive damage to Hoshimoto City. Using their imaginations, the two Arcs came up with a plan. Guil Arc teleported back to Earth while Arc slowed down the trajectory of the falling chunk. They fired their beams at each other to produce enough force to get the chunk to stop falling before pushing it back into place. The two Arcs vanished, and afterwards, the displaced Arc Arisers went back to their rightful owners, with the other copy going back to the mysterious man, who turned out to be Yuma from the future. Yuma had passed all of Sascal's tests and was allowed to go on being Ultraman Arc. Ultraman Arc The Movie: The Clash of Light and Evil
Some time later, due to all the recent monster attacks, a mysterious man wearing a white mask attempted to erase the concept of monsters from the human mind using the power of an ancient Pillar so that he can create a paradise for humanity. To complete his objective, he also had to erase Ultraman Arc, but failed to do so due to Yuma's bond with him being too strong to eliminate. Arc was able to triumph over this enemy and restore the world to the way it was. The Man in the White Mask
Ze Su's Final Plan[]
Ze Su later found out that the Ze Su Gate had been turned into the Galaxy Armor, and thus was sending pollutants through it which also affected Arc and Yuma, depleting their energy and health. Biorno, an ally of Rution, managed to contact Yuma to tell him that their faction had supposedly found a way to resolve the crisis with their star Sonia without having to resort to the Ze Su Gate, but the option was filled with uncertainties and because of that, Ze Su refused to abide by it. Ze Su sent Trigelos to the Earth to search for the Ze Su Gate hidden within Yuma, and managed to locate it, forcing Arc to fight the beast. As the monster had data on all of Arc's powers up to that point, the battle became a hard-fought one with Trigelos countering everything Arc had. The Ultra would have been killed by the monster if not for the GDF's intervention, after which he finished off Trigelos but caused a massive explosion that consumed him and a large portion of Hoshimoto City. Calamity Thrice

Arc defeated by Guilebaku and put in a dream
Immediately afterwards, Sweed tried to separate Yuma from Arc by using Guilebaku to convince him that the past sixteen years were nothing more than a dream. He almost fell for the ruse until Shu and the rest of SKIP found him. After Yuma woke up, Guilebaku tried to chase him down to take the Onyx from within Arc, but he was saved by YouPi being hacked by Biorno, who hid him from the monster and explained why Yuma and Arc's recent affliction. Arc later tried to combat Guilebaku, but his Galaxy Armor was turned against him, leaving him vulnerable to Guilebaku's dream-inducing beam which caught Arc and Yuma in a dream. To make matters worse, a barrier that Guilebaku deployed prevented interference from the outside, making it seem that Arc had been completely defeated. The Descending Dream
Within the dream world, Sweed once more tried to get Yuma to give up Arc by saying that his imagination can turn dreams into reality, allowing him to live in a world where his parents were still alive at the cost of giving up Arc. The false manifestation of his father also attempted to persuade him, until Arc and his real parents told him not to give in and encouraged him to keep running towards the future. Yuma regained the ability to transform into Arc and fought against Guilebaku in the dream world while the GDF used Onyxium particles to target Guilebaku's crystal to get it to lower its barrier before bombing it with aerial fire, which translated into the dream world as damage to Guilebaku as well, giving Arc the opportunity to have Yuma use his imagination to neutralize the pollutants in the Galaxy Armor and transform them into the Miracle Arc Cube. Arc used this new cube to shoot the Galaxer Over-the-Top, which not only destroyed Guilebaku in the dream world and real world, but also restored the destroyed parts of Hoshimoto City.

Arc ends up behind Sweed after circling the whole world
Still, the fight wasn't over yet; Having had it unlocked by Ze Su, Sweed transformed into her Alien Form, which was able to function as its own gate from which Ze Su would be able to unleash Sonia's energy. Arc fought against Sweed to prevent the destruction of the Earth, struggling against her combat abilities until he managed to use the Monohorn as a stopper to block the Ze Su Gate. He then fired his Arc Finalize at maximum power, progressing into Arc Finalize Overload Sensation when the recoil of his own beam sent him flying around the circumference of the Earth, landing behind Sweed back-to-back. By waving the beam around, he was able to successfully fire the beam through Sweed's head, killing her and ending the immediate threat Ze Su posed to Earth.
With the battle over, Yuma and Arc went to the Sonia star system to help find a solution to the ongoing crisis, leaving Earth for three months while this took place. Time to Run, Yuma!

Ultraman Arc Saturn Armor
Saturn Armor [32][33] is Arc's Saturn-based form which manifests from the Saturn Object armament after inserting the Saturn Armor Cube into the Arc Ariser. This form first debuted at Ultra Heroes EXPO 2024 Summer Festival and was never used in the series, as Yuma forgot to pen down his drawing of the "Power of Saturn" as a child.[34] However, as teased in Ultraman New Generation Stars Season 3, this form does indeed exist in-universe, allowing it to potentially see use canonically in the future.
This form specializes in ice-based abilities to freeze and immobilize the enemy.

Trivia[]
- Ultraman Arc's transformation sequence takes some visual elements from the title logo of Return of Ultraman, and his fighting pose and techniques appear to be inspired by Ultraman Jack.
- Originally, Ultraman Arc would have had an Eye Slugger like Ultraseven.
Ultra Hug
- In an interview, Takanori Tsujimoto revealed that he conceived of the Ultra Hug during the storyboard phase after the script was completed and the day before a production meeting, as he wanted a more meaningful transformation than simply raising a transformation item.[40]
- He also noted that the reason Masato Hagiwara both played Yuma's father, Tetsuya Hize, and voiced Arc was because when Rution saved Yuma, he "also hugged the souls of his mother and father," and therefore, "if his father was there, he would hug his son."[40]
- In Figure King No.325, Tsujimoto again suggested that Rution not only saved Yuma but also absorbed his dying father, which is what caused Arc's voice to match Yuma's father's, with traces of his consciousness lingering in Rution. As a result, Arc instinctively hugs Yuma during their transformation. Additionally, Arc subtly tilts his face at the end of the hug to express affection and to highlight the fatherly nature of the gesture.[8]
- Tsujimoto also stated that the Ultra Hug was also inspired by Shin Ultraman, specifically the way Shinji Kaminaga transforms into Ultraman.[8]

SoliLuna King Armor
- The Ultra Action Figure toy line allows for the mix-and-match of Arc's different armors. The official Bandai Ultraman account has dubbed one such armor, a combination of the Solis and Luna Armors, as the SoliLuna King Armor .[41]
- In NEW GENERATION THE LIVE: Ultraman Arc ~To All Living Things~ and subsequent stage shows, Rution's onstage appearance is depicted with an Ultraman Arc suit painted entirely in metallic blue.
