The Ultra Guardウルトラガード (ウルトラ警備隊, Urutora Keibitai, Urutora Gādo), abbreviated as UGユージー (Yū Jī) is an elite combat unit under the TDF[1][2]. This defense team appears in Ultraseven and the sequel series Heisei Ultraseven.

Overview[]

Ultrsvn UG

UG is an elite unit stationed at the TDF Far East Base. The team's main missions involve patrolling and combatting extraterrestrials that attempt to invade Earth. In the television series, the team is composed of six members, all of whom are selected elite members from within the TDF. The name "Ultra" signifies the unit's role as an elite unit.

The defense team is typically stationed underground at the Far East Base, located at the base of Mount Fuji, and utilizes the local terrain and natural environment for camouflage. The base is equipped with the latest facilities and weaponry, but there are instances where it has allowed invading aliens to enter. The team frequently uses various high-tech weapons and equipment for investigative missions, operating not only on the surface but also in underwater, aerial, underground, and outer space environments.

Although the team has a small number of members, each member demonstrates exceptional combat skills. During battles with extraterrestrials, UG members display outstanding military qualities, often engaging with alien spacecraft and achieving a notably high hit rate. They have also repeatedly rescued Ultraseven from peril.

In the Heisei series, UG underwent two reorganizations. Despite these changes, the design of the team members' uniforms and machinery remained unchanged. The interior of the operations command room is more akin to a modern workplace compared to the traditional Ultraman series, equipped with contemporary technology. The base was relocated from the base of Mount Fuji to the Tokyo metropolitan area.

History[]

Ultraseven[]

1967 Ultra Hawk No1 HD 001

In order to resist the invasion of aliens, UG is equipped with advanced mechas including Ultra Hawk No.1.

In the near future, as human civilization begins to venture into space, interstellar wars of aggression are intensifying, and aliens attempting to invade Earth are continuously arriving. Humanity forms the TDF to counter these extraterrestrial threats. Japan establishes the Far East Base of the Earth Defense Force, located in a vast underground facility at the foot of Mount Fuji, where 300 members vigilantly monitor invasions from space day and night. Within the Far East Base, a special unit known as the Ultra Guard (UG) is formed, comprised of elite members selected from various departments, standing at the forefront of Earth's defense.

Among the members, Kaoru Kiriyama becomes the captain of this defense squad, codenamed Ultra One. The team soon expands with the addition of Furuhashi as Ultra Two, Soga as Ultra Three, Amagi as Ultra Four, and finally Anne as Ultra Five. A few months later, during incidents involving human vaporization by the Alien Cool and the subsequent bombing of the Keihin Industrial Zone, a young drifter named Dan Moroboshi, who assisted the Security Team in resolving the crises, is recruited into the UG. At the same time, a newly arrived giant alien defeats Alien Cool and rescues all the kidnapped hostages. Impressed by this alien's assistance, the UG recognizes him as an unofficial seventh member, Ultraseven. The Invisible Challenger

Subsequently, the series depicts the activities of the UG and the key appearances of Ultraseven at critical moments. The team handles various cases and battles against different aliens, often venturing into mysterious spaces, realms, and other dangerous environments.

After several battles, UG received a message from Space Station V3 that detected "a flying object, but when there was no response, they immediately shot it down." Captain Kiriyama speculated, "The atmosphere around Earth is filled with unease; someone must be planning a large-scale invasion," and ordered them to strengthen their defensive posture. As the flying object landed, they attempted to launch a dispersed ground attack. Amagi was kidnapped by the suddenly appearing Alien Ghose, and the monster Pandon also emerged from the flying object.

A message was received from Amagi, who was under Alien Ghose’s control, revealing that the Aliens Ghose' base was actually located underground at Bear-shaped Peak. They claimed, "We will allow humans to relocate to Mars' underground cities, ensuring the livelihood of all humanity. We have powerful underground missiles. Earthlings have strong defenses in the sky and sea, but are completely unprotected underground." If their demands were not met, three billion people would be wiped out. Due to the TDF's slow response, underground missiles were eventually launched toward major cities around the world. Moscow, New York, London, and Paris were all reduced to rubble.

UG bid farewell to Ultraseven who left the earth.

In the face of the largest invasion in history, UG discovered the location of the Alien Ghose’s base, where the kidnapped Amagi was being held. After making a difficult decision, they decided to use the Magmarizer to destroy the hideout. Ultraseven intervened just in time and rescued Amagi. In the final battle against the Reconstructed Pandon, Anne finally revealed that Dan Moroboshi was Ultraseven. When Ultraseven achieved his ultimate victory, he mustered his remaining strength and flew into the dawn sky, with all UG members watching him depart. The Biggest Invasion in History: Part 2

Heisei Ultraseven[]

UG 1994

The second generation UG.

The Heisei Ultraseven series introduces an alternate timeline in which the events of the original Ultraseven marked the only known "Age of Monsters." In this version of history, Ultraseven was the sole Ultra to have ever visited Earth.

Thirty years after these events, the original UG was disbanded, with several members retiring from their duties. However, the threats facing Earth did not disappear, and environmental issues continued to worsen. The TDF gradually expanded its influence, establishing multiple frontline bases and reorganizing the UG several times. At this point, the second-generation UG was led by Shigeru Furuhashi and consisted of three members. When Ultraseven returned to Earth in a comatose state, the UG and the entire TDF took measures to protect him by placing Ultraseven in a secured facility.Ultraseven - Operation: Solar Energy

When two Alien Pitt attempt to invade Earth by taking Anne’s son, Dan, hostage, planning to assassinate Ultraseven. Ultraseven awakens from his slumber and, with the assistance of the TDF, foils their invasion plans. Since then, Ultraseven has worked behind the scenes, aiding the new generation of the UG in defending Earth from further invasions. However, during a confrontation at the Alien Metron base, Ultraseven is caught in an explosion and completely vanishes.Ultraseven - Planet of the Earthlings

1998-1999[]

UG 1998-1999

The third generation UG.[3]

Years later, Furuhashi was promoted to an officer in the TDF and welcomed the third generation of UG members, led by Captain Sanshiro Shiragane. After Ultraseven/Dan regained his memory, he continued to secretly assist them. In one instance, he hid a UG member named Masaki Kazamori inside his capsule, while Dan disguised himself as Kazamori to operate in the field.Eternal Earth

One year later, former UG member Kaji was promoted to a TDF staff officer and spearheaded an initiative known as the "Friendship Plan," which aimed to launch preemptive strikes against any intelligent lifeforms that posed a potential threat to Earth. During this time, Kaji uncovered a secret file known as the "Omega File," which revealed that humanity had once been aggressors. In order to cover up this information, Kaji and other TDF officials eliminated anyone with knowledge of the file. Furuhashi opposed this plan, but after the Alien Valkyrie destroyed the TDF’s lunar base, Kaji pushed the plan forward and held little regard for the third-generation UG team.

In retaliation, the Alien Valkyrie launched an attack on Earth and manipulated Ultra Hawk No.3 to wreak havoc in urban areas, fueling public opinion against the UG and calling for its disbandment. As a result, the UG was indefinitely suspended. During this period, Captain Shiragane gathered his team to investigate, but the Valkyrie Aliens managed to control all UG members, causing internal strife. Although Dan/Ultraseven managed to defeat them one by one, he was eventually forced to severely injure the mind-controlled Kazamori. To save Kazamori, Dan once again merged with him.

Even after the TDF uncovered evidence of the Alien Valkyrie' crimes and reinstated the UG’s operations, divisions remained between the UG and the TDF over the controversial Friendship Plan.Legends and Glory

During the Nonmalt incident, the secret of Kazamori/Dan was revealed by Nonmalt, a woman seeking vengeance for her people. This led to his arrest by high-ranking officials of the TDF. However, all UG members who trusted Kazamori came to his rescue and chose to oppose the TDF in defense of human dignity.

Kazamori transformed into Ultraseven to search for evidence of the Omega File and to prevent Nonmalt from summoning the Zabangi. Ultimately, the UG successfully used the encrypted Omega File to reveal humanity's past crimes to the universe. After the battle, Ultraseven faced punishment for his intervention in what was considered "Earth's internal conflict" and returned to the Land of Light. Before departing, he separated from Kazamori and bid a final farewell to Furuhashi. The "Friendship Plan" was subsequently terminated.I Am an Earthling

Ultraseven: EVOLUTION[]

Five years later, Kazamori and Satomi retired following the Nonmalt incident, and Yuki Kisaragi, with extensive experience in TDF security, became the new member of the team. Satomi later rejoined the UG after Rumi was abducted by the Alien Pegassa.Dark Side

Despite this, the Alien Godola secretly allied with the Alien Pegassa, planning retaliation for the destruction of Pegassa City by Earthlings. They swiftly seized control of the TDF, leading to the dissolution of the UG. The remaining UG members eventually banded together to destroy the compromised TDF base and allied with the unaffected TDF high command. However, due to the Alien Garut' mind control signals, the existence of the UG was eventually erased from public memory and no longer recognized.Perfect WorldNeverland

Following Satomi's death, the UG investigated the light particles shot to Earth by Neo-Pandon and discovered that the seeds they carried originated from plant-like extraterrestrial life forms. The UG suspected that these seeds might be alien weapons and began further investigation. Meanwhile, Kazamori sought to protect the plant life form named Mitsuko, leading to a rupture in his relationship with the UG as he fled with her.Innocent

The UG ultimately used the Omega File to investigate the Akashic Records and the origins of the plant life forms. These records indicated that the evolutionary tree of Earth life was undergoing changes, with human evolution having ceased and potentially being replaced by plant life in the future. However, following the past events, Yuki eventually realized that she had become a "Neo Human" coexisting with the "Neo Neuron."

When the Alien Garut attempted to control Earth by removing information about human and Neo Neuron from the Akashic Records, Kazamori, transformed into Ultraseven, defeated them. This resolved the crisis, and the UG believed that in the future, humans, plant life forms, and Neo Humans would coexist and thrive. However, former members Kazamori and Satomi could not return.Akashic Records

He is later promoted to a staff member in the TDF and command of the Ultra Guard is handed over to Shiragane. During this time it appeared he was killed by Alien Valkyrie but it was later shown that he was somehow revived ten thousand years ago and kept in cold. His mind contained the secrets of the Omega Files. While informing Dan what he had witnessed before he was under suspended animation, he convinced him to believe in humanity, which Dan was initially reluctant to agree. Following Nonmalt's defeat, he and Dan went to the Moon to announce the end of Friendship Plan aggressive plot to the universe. However, Dan told him that he won't be able to enjoy the peace between Earth and the universe as he mentioned that he broke the law by siding with humanity over Nonmalt. He later revealed himself to Furuhashi and left the Moon to await punishment for him in the form of incarcation in Dark Horse Nebula. As for Furuhashi, his fate following these events was unknown.

Sometime after Ultraseven went missing following the explosion in the forest, he complained to Furuhashi regarding the deaths of their crew members (alongside some TDF staffs), leading the former to sever his relation to the latter. Following Alien Valkyrie's rampage in the Moon Base and Furuhashi's death, he became a war hawk after his promotion to general. It was he who launched a 'preemptive strike' against the Nonmalt that formerly attacked Earth but where now in 'friendly relations', causing the entire situation in the 1999 6-part series. At the end, he pointed a gun at Seven when he came to look at the contents of the excavated casket after his guards refused to continue attacking him. However, he was overwhelmed by Ultraseven. He later admitted that he wanted to protect his people, the humans, through force. At the end, he cried as Ultraseven turned back on him and proceeded to enter the vault where the casket was sealed. Sanshiro Shiragane
Main article: Sanshiro Shiragane

Captain Sanshiro Shiragane (シラガネ・サンシロウ, Shiragane Sanshirō)[8] is the third generation captain of the Ultra Guard, he is a man known for not making rash decisions. He is very intuitive, being that he figured out Kazamori was Ultraseven. He previously had a wife, Shoko (Played by Shimazaki Michiko) who died during a traffic accident to save a child. Both mother and unborn infant died.

During Ultraseven EVOLUTION, his weakness was shown to be his regret over loosing his wife and unborn child. He was the only one to free himself from the mental prison on his own.

Masaki Kazamori 60
Main article: Masaki Kazamori

Masaki Kazamori (カザモリ・マサキ, Kazamori Masaki)[9] is a young member of the new Ultra Guard, whom was a hotblooded and inexperienced member of the team. Often times he would be tricked by the older Dan Moroboshi who would store him in capsule form while he disguised himself as Kazamori. This caused Kazamori to grow angry and irritated at the older man, often attacking him on sight as he tried to punch, which always resulted in him being knocked out. It wasn't until the end of the first part of the 1998 trilogy that he learned the stranger that had bothered him so much was none other than his hero Ultraseven. In the 1999 six-part series, he was one of the victims possessed by Alien Valkyrie and Dan, who just arrived in Earth following his colleague's death in Moon Base, shot him, at Kazamori's request, releasing Valkyrie's shadow from him. After Valkyrie's defeat, Kazamori became Ultraseven's human host until the 6th episode, wherein he was released from Seven and was reunited by his teammates.

Keisuke Shima 1
Main article: Keisuke Shima

Keisuke Shima (シマ・ケイスケ, Shima Keisuke)[8] is the vice captain of the team, he was the weapons expert and also the resident martial arts expert. He is often paired with Kazamori with whom he shares a similar level of immaturity. Despite this he can be mature when the situation calls for it and is a rather determined fighter in battle.

As shown in Ultraseven EVOLUTION, his greatest mental weakness is he belief that physical ability will always save him.

Takuma Mizuno 1
Main article: Takuma Mizuno

Takuma Mizuno (ミズノ・タクマ, Mizuno Takuma)[8] was the resident tech expert and genius of the team. Mizuno is often the go to guy to explain the science behind certain alien plots and schemes and the situation the team faces.

In Ultraseven EVOLUTION, his weakness was shown to be his overzealous belief that knowledge will show the path to mankind's salvation.

Satomi Hayakawa 56
Main article: Satomi Hayakawa

Satomi Hayakawa (ハヤカワ・サトミ, Hayakawa Satomi)[8] is one of the more mature members of the team, whom was perhaps the first to suspect Kazamori when he was replaced by Ultraseven, perhaps showing concern for him when the two switched places, since Seven would be going into a dangerous situation. Before Ultraseven EVOLUTION had taken to novel writing. She initially left Ultra Guard until she decided to return in the beginning of the EVOLUTION series. Later, she, along with Yuki Kisaragi, befriended a young psychic girl and befriended the alone and bullied child, allowing her to overpower her more evil peers. Satomi also saved the child from a frightened and bigotrous solder taking a bullet meant for the child. Though dying in Kazamori's arms with the help of a Dragonic Saucer she was able to use her life energy to free Ultraseven from the Dark Nebula.

In Ultraseven EVOLUTION, when she came in contact with the neural wave the trapped 4 of her teammates in mental prisons, her only vision was seeing Kazamori (who was accompanying her at that time) as Seven. Whether this means she had feelings for Ultraseven is uncertain but it is speculated.

Rumi Honjou Miscellaneous 1
Main article: Rumi Honjou

Rumi Honjou (ホンジョウ・ルミ, Honjō Rumi)[8] is the youngest of the team and the resident communication analyst, she spent most of her time in the control room directing the others in combat or to a mission. She was also the girlish of all the Heisei female members and childish.

In Ultraseven EVOLUTION, she was the only member of the team not to fall prey to or encounter the Neural Wave that trapped the team in their own minds, due to being tasked with stealing the Ultra Hawk vehicle.

Yuki Kisaragi 1
Main article: Yuki Kisaragi

Yuki Kisaragi (キサラギ・ユキ, Kisaragi Yuki)[8] was originally an orphan after being abandoned by her abusive parents, she was raised by a disguised Alien Pegassa who had lost her own child when Pegassa City was destroyed. Ignorant of her step-mother true nature, she grew up hating aliens. She joined TDF and was part of the mission that went searching for the Akashic Record. Following the incident she was sent to infirmary only to find abnormalities in her brain. However, her memory after the incident was erased. She was later made a part of the Ultra Guard during what was expected to be its last few days as a spy by a TDF General.

During the Alien Pegassa revenge incident she learned the truth about her step-mother and instead turned against her benefactor after her step-mother sacrificed herself to stop the plot of the vengeance hungry sect of the Alien Pegassa.

It was revealed, as of the last episode of EVOLUTION, that she was one of the two survivors after a failed attempt to retrieve the real Akashic Record and had an ability to open a dimension that contained it. That was also the reason why she earlier triggered headaches and seeing the images of Akashic Record in her mind.

During the incident with the Neural Wave that trapped her team, her weakness/fear was shown to be her lack of trust of others and the perception that no one trusted her not even herself.
