To My Distant Friend (遠くの君へ, Tōku no Kimi e) is the tenth episode of Ultraman Arc.

Synopsis[]

Kazuo, Yuma's classmate and amateur radio aficionado, has found a shred of happiness in his gloomy life by communicating with someone called "Fio" every night.

Unfortunately, the waves used in their correspondence have accidentally summoned "Noiseler" from space!

Will Yuma be able to protect Kazuo after learning the truth about Fio?

Shu Ishido's Diary[]

Noiseler, the noise kaiju, flew towards the sky following the sound of Arc Exa Slash spinning. According to the Space Science Division’s observations, encouraged by Arc, it left Earth’s atmosphere and disappeared into space. It seems it won’t be returning anytime soon, which is a relief for all involved.

Speaking of a “visitor from space”, we all remember the galactic beasts Digelos, which we faced recently, and Monogelos, which appeared on K-Day. We expected the worst, but were able to reduce the damages yet again, thanks to Arc’s help.

That night, I had a very interesting experience when rushing towards the battle ground. When Rin was explaining how Noiseler absorbs vibrational energy, such as sound and radio waves, Arc suddenly appeared by our side and nodded at her words.

Of course, as I wrote many times before, we should not assume that beings we still do not fully understand share the same practices as humans. Though he did hear our conversation and nod (and though I did hear a thankful sound when he left), that doesn’t necessarily mean that he understands human language and was actively listening.

However, considering the way he fought after that, it’s very likely that Arc used the information he heard from Rin as reference for his tactics. Additionally, I think it’s worth mentioning that during the aerial battle, the GDF aircrafts and Arc worked really well together.

It seems the gap between Arc and us humans keeps closing in―― Now that I think about it, this might be too early to say. However, this is how I honestly feel based on the knowledge I acquired from seeing Arc in action so many times.

I can’t help but feel there will definitely be a time in the near future in which Arc and we will be able to establish a more direct connection to overcome a great challenge together.

Though I speak of a “great challenge”, I’m still not sure what it will be. In Hoshimoto City alone there are several issues currently being investigated. Speaking of which, the interim report from the Space Science Division mentioned that, with our current technology, it’s impossible to establish a radio communication to the planet that attracted Noiseler, and they suspect there was another reason for it to happen. As for said reason, it’s likely the same one that brought me to this town in the first place――

Wait, this is just a diary, not a report. I’ll refrain from writing more than I should.

Anyway, with Kazuo Kizaki’s cooperation, the Space Science Division is currently investigating the reason for this extremely rare occurrence. At the same time, they are also keeping a record of Kazuo’s valuable statements regarding this planet, light-years away from ours, in which according to him, his friend “Fio” lived.

Thanks to Yuma’s follow-up, Kazuo was able to calm down and things moved quickly from there. They were classmates during junior high school, but have not really spent time together recently. Even so, it seems that they are now forming a new bond thanks to this incident.

Now that I say this, I realized that since I've moved from country to country, I don't really have many people I can call local friends.. I have none, actually. I don’t feel particularly sad about it, I don't particularly feel lonely about it, but when I see their interactions, I often notice how they get excited over familiar topics like old local shops or updates about mutual acquaintances, and I find it rather heartwarming in its own way.

There is only one thing that I actually concern myself with, and that’s coffee. During our initial investigation, when Yuma went to Kazuo’s apartment, he was polite enough and made sure to drink an entire cup of instant coffee. All he said was that “It was bitter,” but it’s been bothering me that such bitterness has left him with a long lasting bad impression of coffee.

After that, Yuma told Kazuo that he didn’t really like coffee, so he won’t have to drink more when they go out to eat, but I’m still left feeling frustrated. There is no need to rush, though. There will come a day when he will know the taste of high-quality coffee. I’ll patiently wait for it.[2]

Trivia[]

IC-905 and IC-9700
  • In this episode, Icom Incorporated., a radio equipment company, provided prop support. The walkie-talkies used in the episode were actually the company's amateur radio transceivers, the "IC-905" and "IC-9700." During filming, employees from ICOM who hold radio licenses were on-site to guide the communication operation procedures.[5][6][7]
    • As part of their prop assistance, the company also helped with the room setup, including the installation of amateur radio equipment such as antenna dishes, and offered advice on staging the amateur radio communication scenes.
  • The guide audio for the filming of this episode is provided by the voice actress Ikumi Hasegawa.
