According to an interview with Yoichi Iwasa, the creation of the two-part story was discussed:[1]
Producer Toshimichi Miwa noted that at the time, Toshihiro Iijima was fully occupied with filming TBS's historical drama Kaze. Miwa persistently urged Iijima to return to Tokyo and assist with the production of Ultraseven. During this period, Tsuburaya Productions was primarily focused on Fuji TV's programs, including Mighty Jack, and Hajime Tsuburaya was involved in another project, Spy: The Parallel World. Compared to the Ultraman era, the core team's involvement had significantly diminished, and the ratings for Ultraseven were steadily declining. Miwa expressed that he had no choice but to rely on Iijima, hoping that he could turn things around.
Toshihiro Iijima shared that after finishing Kaze, Miwa approached him and said, "Ultraseven is in trouble, please help us save it." Iijima learned that the issue was the declining ratings, but upon further investigation, it became clear that the numbers weren't disastrous; they just weren't as high as Ultraman's. Iijima recalled, "I joked, 'Mr. Miwa, Ultraman was a unique case; you can't expect those numbers every time. Even if I come in, I might not hit those numbers.' But Miwa insisted, 'We need to recover the ratings,' so I took on the challenge."
Iijima considered that the structure of historical dramas and action films, which often feature a major crisis followed by a dramatic turnaround, would be compelling for the audience. He decided to apply this formula to Ultraseven, pushing the story to the brink in the first half and then delivering a climactic reversal in the second half. Iijima believed that this approach was partly successful.
Regarding the "Magnerium" concept, Iijima explained that the idea came from scientific magazines he had read, which discussed the need for specific technologies to enhance laser beam precision. Iijima shared these ideas with Keisuke Fujikawa, asking him to incorporate them into the script.
Iijima pointed out that after this episode, a trend emerged where the Ultra Brothers were placed in crisis situations whenever the ratings dropped, with the intention of boosting viewership. For Iijima, this trend proved to be both beneficial and frustrating.
A trailer for this episode narrated by Mamoru Miyano was released on May 1, 2023 as part of a series of trailers created to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Ultraseven, that also promoted the episode being made free on TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION for a month.[2][3]
