"If the sun setting there is me, then the sun tomorrow will be you, Ultraman Leo."
- ―Dan Moroboshi to Gen
The Day When Ultraseven Dies, is the Day when Tokyo Sinks![1] is the first episode of Ultraman Leo. It features the new Ultra, Gen Otori/Ultraman Leo teaming-up with Ultraseven with Kohji Moritsugu respiring his role as his human form Dan Moroboshi who is also the main cast of Ultraman Leo.
Synopsis[]
While Ultraseven takes on Alien Magma and the Twins Monsters alone, a new hero, Ultraman Leo, appears. Determined to protect Earth, his second home, Gen Otori, who is the human form of Leo, joins MAC and takes on monsters by Captain Dan Moroboshi's side.
Plot[]
Gen Otori, Ultraman Leo's human form, on Earth, trains at the training place. Meanwhile, Ultraseven is engaged in battle with two twin monsters -- Red and Black Giras. As Seven fights, the master of the two beasts, Alien Magma, appears and tips the scale further in their favor. After his leg is severely fractured by the Black Giras, a new hero appears and saves Seven from certain death. It's Ultraman Leo from the barren Planet L77 in the Leo Constellation. Magma and the Giras Monsters are driven off, but Dan Moroboshi is unable to transform back into Ultraseven.
Dan tells Gen he must protect the earth, and gets him to join MAC (Monster Attacking Crew), of which he is the captain. Gen brings the news of his membership to the sports club. He spends time with Kaoru. He then begins to train the intrepid Ultra, harshly. Soon, Red and Black Giras return, sinking an island.
Gen reports to MAC. He believes Alien Magma is behind the sinking, but no evidence is found. Then the monsters attack Tokyo, devastating it. The sports club flees, but Gen transforms. Leo battles the monsters, but is no match for them.

Trivia[]
- This episode was unique in the history of the Ultraman Series. It showed Ultraseven's rare defeat, had more than three enemies, and featured Leo failing to win in his first appearance. These elements built strong suspense and influenced later series like Ultraman Dyna and Ultraman Gaia.
- In this episode, Leo and Ultraseven's voices sounded deeper than in later episodes.
- Tatsumi Nikamoto, who played Ultraman Leo in the suit, was originally Ultraseven's stand-in in the first episode. His great physical performance earned him the role of Leo.
- Most scenes of two monsters destroying Tokyo and the huge tsunami hitting Kuroshio Island were newly filmed for this episode. But a small part of the tsunami was reused from episode 13 in Return of Ultraman, These new scenes were later reused in other shows like Dinosaur Expedition Born Free, Dinosaur Great War Izenborg, and the opening of Ultraman 80.
- In episode 34 of Ultraman Mebius, Kuroshio Island returns as a key setting. The island features a monument dedicated to victims of monster attacks.
- As one of many selected to celebrate the Ultraman Series' 60th anniversary, this episode was made available on the Ultraman YouTube channel from October 6, 2025 for two weeks, following October's theme of "The Story of Promise."[3][4][5]
Errors[]
- The biggest mistake in this episode is Ultraseven's head: the ear pieces are missing, and the Eye Slugger may not be properly adjusted.[6][7] This suit first appeared in episode 40 of Ultraman Taro, The ear pieces were left out due to last-minute changes for actor Tatsumi Fukuhara. Also, there was a large gap between the chest armor and neck, and the neck material looked too loose.
- Ultraseven's missing ears quickly caught viewers' attention. In Ultra Tokusatsu PERFECT MOOK Vol. 09: Ultraman Leo, designer Tsuyoshi Nonaka recalled that many kids, including himself, noticed something was wrong. As a third-grader, he was shocked and thought it was careless for the staff to film Ultraseven without ears. This mistake even made him stop watching Ultraman Leo.[8]
