Barely defeating Pandon, Ultraseven is damaged and energy exhausted. Alien Ghose enforced total surrender of TDF through Amagi. After investigating the enemy base, TDF made a decision of attack, even with the risk of Amagi's life. As if to shake off the devil approaching, Dan made his final attempt for transformation. But then, Anne appears...
Director Kazuho Mitsuta once reflected on the production of this episode, saying: "I realized that I might never direct a work like this again, which left me with a sense of melancholy... So, completing the final episode of Ultraseven felt, in a way, like a farewell for life."[2]
Screenwriter Tetsuo Kinjo revised the script multiple times, striving to elevate the story into a profound tale of "Dan Moroboshi, the guardian of Earth's peace, and his deep bond with the Ultra Guard." Commenting on this, Masahiko Shiraishi remarked: "Kinjo transformed the finale into a narrative about Dan and the Ultra Guard jointly protecting Earth."[3]
This episode features the classical music piece Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 by Robert Schumann.[4][5] The opening plays when Dan reveals his identity to Anne and the song continues during Ultraseven's fight against Reconstructed Pandon.
The use of this music was used to both make the climax more emotional and due to a short schedule and not enough time to make a music piece for the battle.
According to series composer Toru Fuyuki, director Mitsuta initially suggested using Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto. However, Fuyuki later realized Mitsuta had actually meant Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto. Mitsuta's suggestion was intended to evoke a sense of "youthful sweetness and tenderness." However, Fuyuki felt that this choice lacked the emotional intensity needed to complement the pivotal moment when Dan reveals to Anne that he is an alien. Ultimately, Fuyuki decided to use a piece by Schumann, believing it better captured the dramatic weight of the scene.[6][7]
Dan revealed his true identity to Anne.
One of the most famous scenes in the series is when Dan reveals his true identity to Anne in this episode.[8]
According to the episode's director Mitsuta, he originally wanted to have Anne and Shinichi appear as silhouettes when they meet on the beach in episode 42, "Ambassador of the Nonmalt", but was unable to due to natural lighting constraints, so the scene in this episode was to make up for it. It was created by having the actors standing in front of a panel covered in a uneven pattern of aluminium foil sheets and an assistant director striking it from behind to create the illusion of sparks.[9]
He also stated that he knew he would be directing the final episode while working on episode 42 and that he aimed to minimize the emotional distance between Dan and Anne as much as possible, mentioning that the original proposal for the series briefly mentioned a love story between Dan and Anne, though he felt that only he and writer Tetsuo Kinjo tried to incorporate it.[9]
The scene where Dan reveals his true identity to Anne resulted from handwritten revisions made by screenwriter Tetsuo Kinjo on the printed script. The line “When the morning star shines in the western sky, a single light will fly into space” was initially written to be delivered after Dan had transformed back into Ultraseven, but this was changed during the script's refinement.
Interestingly, the lines "Wait! Dan, don't go!" and "Amagi is in danger!" were not part of the original script and appear to have been improvised during filming.
The location for Dan's emotional confession to Anne was a material storage yard along the Tama River in Fuchu, Tokyo. While the area has since been redeveloped into a residential district, apartment buildings were already beginning to emerge in the vicinity at the time of filming.
In the iconic scene where Dan reveals his true identity to Anne, the Ultra Eye prop was accidentally left behind at the studio. To address this issue, Mitsuta quickly crafted a substitute using cardboard, ensuring the scene could proceed as planned.[10]
Mitsuta stood next to the two and gave instructions.[11]
The scene depicting the Far East Defense Base being attacked by the Alien Ghose was filmed even before the first episode aired. Mitsuta recalled, "Since the invaders were the enemies, we anticipated the possibility of the base being attacked eventually. The special effects team proceeded with a ‘Let's shoot it first and figure out the specifics later' approach to ensure we captured the destruction."
Scenes of explosions engulfing cities such as Moscow, New York, London, and Paris are reused footage from the 1961 film The Last War.
Captain Kiriyama's words "We humankind have to protect Earth with our own hands" are brought up in Ultraman Mebius episodes 2, 17 and 48.
A trailer for this episode narrated by Megumi Hayashibara was released on November 1, 2023 as part of a series of trailers created to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Ultraseven, that also promoted the episode being made free on TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION for a month.[12]
In this episode, there is a copy of Bokura magazine, December 1967 issue, in Akio's room.[13]
