Battered and weakened over his long tenure as Ultraseven, Dan Moroboshi's body begins to fail him. His superior from Nebula M78 forbids him from transforming and begs him to return home to recover. When a mistake he makes while exhausted ultimately leads to the abduction of fellow Ultra Guard member Amagi, Dan decides to ignore his superior's warning and transform one more time.
Plot[]
Dan Moroboshi wakes up in the middle of the night wracked by a terrible fever. While out on a routine patrol in the Hawk-2, he receives a report from Space Station V3 about an unknown space craft rapidly approaching Earth. He engages the ship but is unable to hit it in his delirious state. The ship retaliates and damages the Hawk-2 before ultimately being shot down by Captain Kurata, who admonishes Dan for his sloppy work.
Dan makes an emergency landing and wakes up in the medical bay, where Anne Yuri advises him to rest despite his protests. Ignoring her advice, he attempts several different training exercises but makes no progress. Meanwhile, several strange occurrences suggest an imminent invasion, prompting Kiriyama to order his team to stay on guard. Later that evening, Dan is visited by his superior from Nebula M78, who begs him to return home as his body has been severely damaged from his many previous fights as Ultraseven. Dan refuses due to the imminent invasion, and his superior warns him against expending any more energy.
In the control room, Dan receives an alert from Space Station V3 about another craft entering Earth's atmosphere, but he briefly falls unconscious. Waking up moments later, he alerts the rest of his team. They fly out in the Ultra Hawks 1 and 3 to confront the ship, but are puzzled when it doesn't return fire. The ship lands and Kiriyama orders Soga and Amagi to investigate. The approach the ship and are ambushed by several aliens, who capture Amagi while Soga escapes. The rest of the team open fire on the ship, and it retaliates by sending out a giant, two-headed bird monster that instantly engulfs the surrounding area in flames. Dan sends Anne to extinguish the fires with the Hawk-3 and attempts to transform into Ultraseven when he is stopped by a vision of his superior. When the monster approaches his teammates, he ignores the warning and transforms anyway.
He battles the giant monster but is severely beaten in his weakened state. Before it deals the killing blow, Anne distracts the monster long enough for Ultraseven to kill it with his Eye Slugger. He reverts to his human form and collapses to the ground. In the medical bay, Kurata angrily berates Dan for not responding to his alerts sooner and storms out of the room. Dan begins writhing in pain, on the brink of death, as the rest of the Ultra Guard watch with concern.
Ichikawa admitted that at the time, he couldn't fully grasp the depth of emotions that Tetsuo Kinjo poured into the final episode of Ultraseven. He was preoccupied with completing his own scripts and had little time to consider Kinjo's intent. However, upon revisiting the behind-the-scenes stories of Ultraseven, he finally understood the significance of Kinjo's feelings.
For individuals like Kinjo and Shozo Uehara, who had a strong connection to their homeland, there was often an intense longing to return, a feeling of “needing to go back.” Achieving this sometimes required sacrificing everything they cherished in the present. Kinjo imbued these sentiments into the script for this episode, reflecting a deep emotional connection to his roots. This inspiration from Kinjo later influenced Ichikawa when he wrote My Beloved Ultraseven.
Regarding the voice of Alien Ghose, the original script specified that it should resemble a "reversed audio effect." However, in the final broadcast, the sound was altered to a "sped-up playback effect."
In the scene depicting Dan's body undergoing extreme transformations, the script initially envisioned Alien Ghose observing the events through a window from the outside. In the final broadcast, this was replaced by a shot of Anne watching Dan with a worried expression from a distance.
The original script also described the Chief of Ultraseven as "a figure summoned by Dan through telepathy."
In the battle between Ultraseven and Pandon, the initial script included a detailed depiction of Ultraseven's forehead Beam Lamp being smashed and deformed. Ultraseven was shown writhing in pain, clutching his head, and attempting to use his Eye Slugger. However, the Eye Slugger lost power mid-air and fell to the ground. Ultraseven tried to retrieve it, but Pandon stepped on it first. These elements were modified in the final production, with the scene of the damaged Beam Lamp ultimately removed.
A trailer for this episode narrated by Megumi Hayashibara was released on November 1, 2023 as part of a series of trailers created to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Ultraseven, that also promoted the episode being made free on TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION for a month.[2][3]
