Trivia[]
- During the planning of episode 48, some production staff suggested that Yoneda should sacrifice himself in the battle against Zebubu. However, screenwriter Hideyuki Kawakami opposed this idea, believing that even if tears were shed, there should still be hope for the future, and thus, the ending should convey a sense of optimism.[1]
- In the original version, the scene involved Kei, who was far from the battlefield, learning that Yoneda had been rescued. Relieved, she held onto the badge that Yoneda had previously given to her. In this version, a severely injured Yoneda would later personally retrieve the badge from Kei.[2]
- The episode’s director, Tsugumi Kitaura, also agreed that the story should conclude with the "joy of being alive." However, he made changes to Kawakami’s original script so that Kei finds Yoneda alive on the battlefield. Kitaura felt it was essential for the two characters to meet in person. If Kei had only received news from a distance that Yoneda had survived, without them seeing each other, the emotional impact would have been diminished.
- Kawakami mentioned that while writing this scene, he was inspired by the 1983 film The Right Stuff. [3]
- At the TSUBURAYA CONVENTION 2023 Ultraman Gaia 25th anniversary event, Hasegawa, who played the role of Yoneda, described Yoneda as "a clumsy man who always volunteers to be on the front lines as a senior member." He recalled that during the filming, he was trying not to laugh before the story progressed, as he did not know how the plot would develop until reading the script. He also revealed that he was constantly worried about questions like, "Will this episode be the end? Will there be a casualty? Will the Falcons team disband?"[4]
