Soma Ryumon (リュウモン ソウマ, Ryūmon Sōma) is a member of the newly-reorganized GUTS-Select. He is the pilot of the GUTS Falcon, which had been repurposed from a remote-controlled unmanned vehicle to a manually piloted one. Always calm and collected, his cool personality doesn't often let him show his emotions. After being saved by a TPU member as a boy when he was caught in a monster attack, he began training himself and found his calling in GUTS-Select, joining against his father’s wishes. He swore to become the best to prove to his father that he made the right choice. He always assesses the situation with a critical eye, leading the captain to call him an "observant genius".[1][2]

History[]

Pre-Ultraman Decker[]

Ryumon as a young child

Ryumon as a young child

At the time of Metsu-Orochi's attack, a young Soma Ryumon was separated from his parents, hiding in fear inside a car. A TPU member noticed him there and encouraged him to be brave, giving Ryumon his TPU badge and telling him where to go. Ryumon wanted to see that TPU member again to give his thanks, but never got the chance to. Investigation from the Past The event became his reason for wanting to join the TPU himself one day, inspired by the bravery of that one member. Move Out, GUTS-Select!

Ultraman Decker[]

Ryumon joined the TPU as a recruit of the security staff, training with the other students under Taiji Murahoshi, stationed at the spaceport at Sorafune city with his colleague Ichika Kirino. They first met Kanata Asumi when he was delivering a package of rice crackers, before the Spheres attacked and Ultraman Decker appeared. Day of the Attack With the Spheres forming the Sphere Barrier over the TPU decided to start a new training regimen to form a new anti-Sphere team, converting all the security trainees into combat units from then on.

After a year of training, the TPU was about to reassemble a new GUTS-Select team by choosing members from among the trainees. Kanata, Ryumon and Ichika were put together for their final patrol exercise, which took a sour turn when Kanata injured his leg, causing an argument to break out between him and Ryumon as Kanata wanted to keep going to push his limits while Ryumon insisted they call off the patrol and return, but Ichika broke up their argument before they started fighting. A Deathdrago suddenly appeared from the underground and the principal Murahoshi ordered all the recruits to evacuate. However, the three of them stayed back to help the people get to safety instead. After Decker defeated the monster, the trio were approached by Murahoshi who decided to place them in GUTS-Select, but they would not go unpunished for ignoring orders to evacuate prior. Kanata's Resolve As GUTS-Select took on more missions, Ryumon gradually came to care more for and put trust in his teammates while fighting against the Spheres and other threats.

Following Agams' betrayal, the TPU's Internal Affairs sent their director, Alien Metron Nigel, to investigate Murahoshi for suspicions of having worked with Agams, based on precedent ten years ago when he deserted his special team at the time of Metsu-Orochi's attack to supposedly save a child, though such a child was never found. Despite the pleas of the other teammates, Nigel put Murahoshi under detention while the investigation was to be conducted, even when a Gomess appeared and was making its way to Komie City but with Murahoshi under lockdown, GUTS-Select was not authorized to deploy. Fortunately, Ryumon was able to find evidence of Murahoshi's innocence by digging up the past, leading him to learn that Murahoshi was the TPU member who saved him from the monster attack while he was a child, bringing out the old TPU badge that Murahoshi once gave him. With that, Nigel was convinced enough to let Murahoshi go, allowing GUTS-Select to sortie and defeat Gomess with Ultraman Decker's assistance. Before leaving, Nigel decided to apologize while praising the team for being good subordinates to the captain. Investigation from the Past

Ultraman Decker Finale: Journey to Beyond[]

Six months after the Spheres were defeated, Kanata, Ryumon and Ichika became instructors at the TPU training facility. While Ryumon was made the new captain of GUTS-Select and Ichika was about to go on a journey through space to follow her dreams, Kanata was still lost about his own future. While going out to celebrate Ryumon's promotion, Dinas appeared form a portal and landed on Kanata, sensing something strange from him, not yet aware that he used to be Ultraman Decker.

GUTS-Select was deployed to investigate when Gibellus used his invasion device to render people in the city unconscious. When the team encountered a squad of alien villains, they struggled until Dinas came to help, using her Mons Dimension Cards to drive them off before Alien Pedan summoned King Joe, which forced Dinas to transform into Ultraman Dinas to fight it while GUTS-Select destroyed the device making people fall unconscious. They then regrouped on the Nursedessei where Dinas explained the situation to the team, telling them of Gibellus' motives. Kanata, Ichika and Ryumon were then sent out to investigate. Gibellus then unleashed another one of his invasion devices, this time a much larger one that affected the whole of Japan as he took the life essence of humans, intending to combine them with monsters to make his personal army.

Dinas gave each of the GUTS-Select members a copy of her Gagi card to protect them from the effects of Gibellus' device before they were sent out to deal with an Alien Icarus, who lured them into an area to trap them within a subspace field controlled by two of Gibellus' devices, and grew giant. Without the ability to transform, Kanata was set on the run from Icarus until the GUTS Gryphon could pick him up, allowing him to destroy one of the subspace control devices, thus setting them free from the dimensional anomaly. Meanwhile, Gibellus and his forces infiltrated and seized the TPU headquarters, leaving them without backup. Gibellus then transformed into Gigalogaiser and defeated Dinas, badly injuring her and forcing the group to take refuge in a cabin. Frustrated, Kanata pressured Ryumon into taking the lead as GUTS-Select's new captain, before realizing the error of his actions and apologizing.

The group then made an attempt to take back the TPU headquarters with Kanata, Ichika and Ryumon fending off the aliens while Dinas sneaked in. They were helped by Kaizaki, Murahoshi, Nigel and Grace, who then assisted them in turning the situation in their favour after Kanata and Dinas were captured. Kanata then used the Terraphaser in the battle against Gigalogaiser while Ichika and Ryumon piloted the GUTS Falcon and GUTS Hawk with Murahoshi and Kaizaki in the Nursedessei, but they were eventually overwhelmed when the monster combined with Gibellus' ship, Zorgaus, to form Zor-Gigalogaiser. Kanata took the brunt of a powerful beam meant for Dinas, and died inside the Terrapahser. However, Dinas and his fellow teammates' strong desire for him to live caused the Dinas Ultra Dimension Card to combine with the other Dimension Cards that the others had, reforming the Ultraman Decker Ultra Dimension card, whose light somehow brought Kanata to life. He then transformed into Ultraman Decker to fight Zor-Gigalogaiser, forcing Gibellus to retreat after the Zorgaus was successfully destroyed by the Nursedessei and GUTS Gryphon. Still baffled at Kanata's strength and determination, Gibellus tried to attack Decker once again but was overwhelmed by his Selgend Beam, destroying him and ending his treat forever.

Later on, Ryumon was fully and officially promoted to the captain of GUTS-Select succeeding Murahoshi, remaining on the Earth to defend the planet against any future threats. Ultraman Decker Finale: Journey to Beyond

Trivia[]

  • According to an interview with Nobunaga Daichi, he initially auditioned for the role of Kanata. A few days later, he was called to the office and informed that he had been cast in Ultraman Decker, but not as Kanata. Instead, he was cast as Soma.[3]
    • Since Daichi had not auditioned for Ryumon, he was initially confused about what kind of character this would be. However, as he read the script and interacted with the other actors, exchanging lines, he gradually began to understand and comprehend what Ryumon was like.
  • As this was Daichi's first major role in a series, he received advice on acting through the assistance of other actors. The harmonious atmosphere within the team also helped him overlook any differences in age among the cast members. He also mentioned that the bright personality of Kengo Manaka, played by Raiga Terasaka, provided him with a lot of inspiration.[4]
  • Regarding the decision for Ryumon to act as the acting captain in the film, Director Masayoshi Takesue revealed that this was decided during the early planning stages.[5]
  • Ryumon's surname is believed to be inspired by Goro Ryu, a major character from Ultraman Ace.
