Shohei Tojo (東條 昭平, Tōjō Shōhei) is a Japanese director, known for directing many Ultraman Series episodes during the Showa era.

Career[]

In the 1960s, after graduating from university, Tojo joined a theater production company, where he worked as an assistant director on several television projects for Toho and Daiei. Shortly after, he was introduced to Tsuburaya Productions through a producer from the theater company, marking the beginning of his involvement in tokusatsu work. In 1968, he debuted as a director with the series Fight! Mighty Jack.

In 1971, Tojo made his debut in the Ultraman series by directing Return of Ultraman episode 33 "The Monster User and the Boy," However, the episode's content became controversial after its completion, leading TBS, the network airing the series, to initially reject the episode and demand a reshoot. Although the episode ultimately aired as it was originally created, the incident led to Tojo being punished with a demotion to assistant director and being excluded from further involvement in the Ultraman series.[1][2][3][4]

Over the following two years, Tojo primarily directed projects produced by Tsuburaya Productions that were not affiliated with TBS, such as Mirrorman. It was not until 1974 that he returned to the Ultraman series, contributing as a director to Ultraman Taro and Ultraman Leo. In the late 1970s, Tojo also worked on other Tsuburaya Productions series.

After the conclusion of Ultraman 80, Tojo was out of work. With help from Nobuo Yajima, he caught the eye of Toei producer Susumu Yoshikawa, who brought him into Toei. From then on, he directed Super Sentai series until retiring in 1997.[5]

In the 21st century, Tojo occasionally appeared in interviews for books related to tokusatsu and the Ultraman series.[6][7]
