The SRI (Science Research Institute) (科学捜査研究所, Kagaku Sōsa Kenkyūjo) is a private research organization specialized in scientific investigations, and they appear in Operation: Mystery.[1]

SRI is a private research organization with a mission to handle scientifically complex, challenging, or cases involving supernatural phenomena for the Japanese police through the utilization of their uniquely developed machinery, equipment, and technology.

Throughout the series, SRI often undertakes special operations at the request of the police or collaborates with law enforcement in joint investigations. However, being a private organization, SRI does not possess equivalent authority to that of the police.[2]

Tadashi Matoya

Tadashi Matoya

Tadashi Matoya (的矢 忠, Matoya Tadashi) is the director of SRI. In the past, he served as the head of the forensic division at the Metropolitan Police Department.

Recognizing the significance of scientific investigation during his tenure, he founded SRI upon retirement, leveraging his experience. He is currently 48 years old.[2]

He is portrayed by Yasumi Hara (原保 美, Hara Yasumi).


Shiro Maki

Shiro Maki (牧 史郎, Maki Shirō) is the strategist of SRI, possessing a calm and steadfast belief in science. His intense aversion to crime is rooted in the loss of his father in a past scientific crime.

Later, at the invitation of Matoya, a colleague from his time at the Metropolitan Police Department, he joined SRI. He is currently 28 years old.[2]

He is portrayed by Shin Kishida.


Kyosuke Misawa

Kyosuke Misawa (三沢 京助, Misawa Kyōsuke) is a member of SRI, possessing an enthusiastic personality and sharp intuition. A graduate of the National Defense University, he not only boasts a robust physique but also possesses a wealth of scientific knowledge.

In his day-to-day activities, he is often seen in the laboratory wearing a white coat. He is currently 24 years old.[2]

He is portrayed by Homare Suguro.


Hiroshi Nomura

Hiroshi Nomura (野村 洋, Nomura Hiroshi) is a member of SRI, primarily responsible for fieldwork within the team.

Despite being somewhat careless at times, his agile initiative and amiable personality make him an active contributor to the team. He is currently 21 years old.[2]

He is portrayed by Seiji Matsuyama (松山 省二, Matsuyama Seiji).


Saori Ogawa

Saori Ogawa (小川 さおり, Ogawa Saori) is a member of SRI, primarily responsible for logistical tasks such as scientific analysis and communication.

She actively assists in collecting evidence at the scene of events. Despite being somewhat naive, she possesses a sharp intuition for perceiving human nature. She can intuitively sense the subtleties of human interactions in the surrounding atmosphere. She is currently 19 years old.[2]

She is portrayed by Reiko Kobashi (小橋 玲子, Kobashi Reiko).

Taizo Machida

Taizo Machida (町田 大蔵, Machida Taizō) is the head of the First Investigation Division at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He was formerly a colleague of Matoya during their time at the Metropolitan Police Department, and their relationship is close.

Therefore, following the establishment of SRI, he assumes the role of a bridge between the police and the organization. Many requests for and collaborations in investigations are personally approved by him. He is currently 48 years old.

He is portrayed by Akiji Kobayashi.


Jiro 1968

Jiro

Jiro (次郎, Jirō) is an assistant at SRI, primarily operating alongside Nomura. He only appears in the early stages of the series. He is currently 11 years old.

He is portrayed by Hiroshi Nakashima (中島 洋, Nakashima Hiroshi).


Arsenal[]

Attire[]

Under normal circumstances, members of SRI wear suits for investigative missions. However, for certain events, they don specialized attire:

  • SRI Jacket (SRIジャケット, Esu Āru I Jaketto): Crafted from special fibers, the exclusive protective suit provides high-level sealing and various functionalities, including protection against toxins, heat resistance, bulletproofing, cold resistance, and anti-stab features. Typically, this ensemble is compactly folded and stored in a carrying case attached to the belt, ready to be retrieved and donned as needed.

Equipment[]

  • Transmitter (発信機, Hasshin-ki): Usually built into the members' belt buckles, it can notify headquarters of their location in emergency situations.
  • Penlight (ペンライト, Penraito): A compact flashlight with powerful illumination, widely used in investigations in dark environments.
  • Chemical Mace (ケミカルメース, Kemikaru Mēsu): A handgun-shaped sprayer capable of ejecting various chemicals. This weapon only appears in the NG version of episode 2.
  • Compact Camera (小型撮影機, Kogata Satsueiki): A pistol-shaped camera.
  • Miniature Camera (小型カメラ, Kogata Kamera): A miniaturized camera shaped like a lighter.
  • Spectrum Destruction Device (スペクトル破壊機, Supekutoru Hakai-ki): A penlight-shaped small ray gun.
  • Tape Measure Type Special Grip (メジャー型特殊グリップ, Mejā-gata tokushu gurippu): Can be used as a restraint weapon to immobilize opponents during hand-to-hand combat.
  • Sunbeam 500 (サンビーム500, Sanbīmu Gohyaku): A high-performance laser gun that requires prior authorization due to its high-power armament.
  • Perfect Light (パーフェクトライト, Pāfekuto Raito): A large flashlight crafted by Makishi.

Mecha[]

  • Tortoise (トータス号, Tōtasu-gō): A compact vehicle equipped with various covert devices, typically driven by Nomura. The entire vehicle has undergone reinforced modifications, including a heat-resistant engine hood and bulletproof windshield made from a special alloy. It can accommodate up to two passengers. In the early stages of the series, it featured gull-wing windows, but later these were removed and replaced with a convertible top.[2]
    • The vehicle is based on the Subaru Sambar 360.
  • SRI Special Vehicle (SRI専用車, Esu Āru I Sen'yōsha): Another vehicle equipped with high-performance tracking and communication devices, its appearance identical to an ordinary sedan except for the SRI logo on the body.
    • The vehicle is based on the Toyota Crown MS50 early model sedan.

The emblem of PSRI.

  • In episode 24 of Ultraman Max, titled "The Untargeted Town", there is an organization introduced called P.S.R.I (Police Science Research Institute), whose logo and name both reference SRI.
