Trivia[]
- According to screenwriter Jiro Kaneko:[2]
- Kaneko joined the series at the request of Takeshi Yagi. He had previously written for Ultraman Max, contributing to episodes 12 and 17. Since Max had such a different tone, Kaneko set out to develop a fresh concept for this series. Since he enjoys comedy-driven stories, he imagined an evil alien invader arriving on Earth, only to discover that humans are completely unaware of the invasion. Ultimately, the alien abandons the plan and returns home in quiet defeat.
- Another key idea was the anti-war theme. The historical context of the original series, which aired in the late 1960s, was very different from that of 2007. To modern Japan, war felt remote and abstract. However, conflicts continued elsewhere in the world. Therefore, Kaneko wanted the episode's message to address contemporary issues.
- Originally, Jin and the other agents were supposed to support the weaker alien, the Alien Chamuda. After fighting back against the approaching Alien Vo-Da, Alien Chamuda would cause complete destruction, leaving Jin to struggle with guilt. However, during a meeting, Yagi suggested ending the story with both sides destroyed, arguing that "war has no winners." Kaneko felt that this approach strengthened the anti-war message.
- While writing the script, Kaneko faced one major challenge: the world had already been invaded. In such a setting, he felt it wouldn’t make sense for new invaders to appear. The series mentions that humans ended the last war five years earlier, which implies that the invasion also ended at that time. Although this wasn’t officially part of the setting, Kaneko used it as the basis for his script. To him, war never truly ends, it simply shifts depending on which forces hold power.
- He also intentionally included Showa-style shops in the supposedly near-future world. Kaneko believed that no matter how much society advances, some areas will always lag behind. Director Kenji Suzuki appreciated this choice. To avoid a conventional story, Kaneko made the aliens in this episode the weakest in the entire Ultraman Series, so weak that ordinary humans could overpower them.
