PD Ultraman Invader is a title released in 1995 for the PlayStation in Japan only. The game was developed by Bandai under license from Taito. As its name implies, this game is an Ultraman-themed Space Invaders spin-off.

Gameplay[]

Two modes are available: Ultraman Mode (ウルトラマンモード) and Original Mode (オリジナルモード), which is a port of the original Space Invaders game with both single player and two-player versus gameplay modes.

Ultraman Mode features three different gameplay modes. Story Mode (ヒストリーモード) is the main game, where you complete stages and defeat bosses. Through Mode (とことんモード) is a survival/time attack mode while the Versus Mode (対戦モード) allows for two players to compete against each other. In Ultraman Mode, the Core Cannon is replaced by one of various different Ultramen depending on the stage, while the enemies are replaced with monsters from the show, with all sprites done in a pre-rendered super-deformed style. The Alien UFO replaces the general UFO target, but various Higher-class Ultras (i.e. - Zoffy, Father of Ultra) will appear to replace the UFO, dropping power ups when shot at.

The game is played from an oblique view point, with the stage scrolling left and right as you move to those directions instead of being a single fixed screen. When only one enemy is left on the screen, this enemy will power itself up, taking multiple hits to be defeated. various unique enemy set up levels will also occur such as keeping the enemies away from the bottom of the screen. Boss battles will usually take place after about a level or so.

Trivia[]

  • This game features every mainstream Showa Ultraman Series, and is the first to include Ultraman Great, Powered, and Neos all in the same game.
  • Ultraman Neos does not have a featured stage in history mode. This is likely due to Neos at the time only having started its series.
  • Ultraman Neos and Ultraseven 21 are only playable outside of history mode when completing the main storyline.
  • This is one of the only collaborative Ultraman games to feature a non-toku arcade game as a side mode.
  • The monsters Gikogilar, Baltan V, and Saramandora are the only Kaiju not to appear in history mode.
  • Some monsters and Ultras reuse sounds from other Kaiju and Ultras. This was likely done to save time.
  • The ZAT Cannon appears to be a game exclusive vehicle addition for stage 5 to mirror the Space Invaders-style of the game.
    • The ZAT cannon is also only playable in story mode.
  • If the player kills all enemies in stage 1 but avoids Baltan, he will retreat, and initiate a boss fight against him and his clones.
  • In stage 4, all monsters will approach the player in a tower-defense style, requiring them to shoot the monsters away from the safe zone to advance.
  • In stage 5, the ZAT Condor 1 can appear as a bonus target.
  • If Leo dies in stage 6 level 2, Ultraman King will appear to speak to him, and revive him back.
  • In stage 7, if the player kills all enemies but spares Jihibikiran left, it will transform to Idatenran & run away.
  • If Ultraman Great does nothing for a few seconds in level 8, Father of Ultra will appear to warn him of oncoming danger.
    • Further ignoring Father of Ultra will result in a sudden swarm of Bogun and Degunja appearing.
  • In stage 9, if the player kills all enemies but spares Powered Gabora, it will begin changing to walking towards the safe zone rather than in a sideways movement.
  • If Ultraman Leo receives the Ultra Array, Astra will assist him.
  • This game features 5 different versions of Baltan: Baltan, Baltan Jr, Powered Baltan, Psycho Baltan, and Baltan V.
  • In history mode, each Ultra has an unique CG rise animation (excluding Neos and Seven 21).
  • Various CG animations will play in history mode:
    • If Ultraman dies in level 2 of stage 1, a CG animation will play of Gomora destroying the Osaka Tower.
    • When the player finishes level 1 of stage 3, a CG animation of Ultraman Jack kicking off Kingsaurus III's horn will play.
    • When the player finishes level 2 of stage 4, a CG animation of Ultraman Ace finishing Ace Killer with the Space Q will play.
  • While the Space Invaders mode is a recreation of the original arcade, it has a visible background of a space moon.
