Trivia[]
- Based on statements from Noriaki Ikeda and producer Kazuho Mitsuta:[1]
- The production of this episode stemmed from a proposal by Bunzo Wakatsuki, who wished to create a story similar to Ultraseven episode 26 "Super Weapon R1." Wakatsuki, who served as the writer for that episode, greatly admired the episode's storyline. However, he felt a deep sense of guilt for Star Bem Gyeron each time he reflected on the episode. For that reason Wakatsuki wished to focus on Ultraman 80 saving monster first viewed as 'perpetrators', to create a form of atonement for the death of Star Bem Gyeron. In this way this episode and "Super Weapon R1" contrasted, as former was meant as a form of redemption for the later.
- During the production of "Super Weapon R1," the backdrop of the American military's nuclear tests affected Wakatsuki. He reflected that, in his younger years, he had been impulsive in his writing, perhaps even too forward-thinking. As he grew older (at the time, he was 50), his reflections deepened, and he desired to revisit themes of anti-nuclear sentiment from a fresh perspective.
- According to the 1982 book Heroes' Miscellaneous Knowledge Encyclopedia, this episode was broadcast on August 6, the anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing. Because of the sensitive timing, terms such as "nuclear bomb" and "nuclear weapon" were cut from the broadcast, but they were restored in later home video releases.[2]
