"Gridman is mine!"

―Mad Origin

Mad Origin (マッドオリジン, Maddo Orijin) is the main antagonist of GRIDMAN UNIVERSE. A Kaiju that aimed to monopolize Gridman's power of creation, Mad Origin was responsible for creating Kaiju using the Hyper Agent's thoughts, doing so to harvest the negative thoughts of humankind from various universes. It later assumes a second form after absorbing Alexis・Kerib.

Subtitle: Monster Source Aggregate (怪獣発生源集合体, Kaijū Hasseigen Shūgō-tai)

Conception

Etymology

As with all the appearing Kaiju in the movie, Mad Origin is named after the misspelling of Gridman's name from episode 31 of Gridman the Hyper Agent, rendered as "GRIDOMAN". In it however, Mad Origin has an extra letter "I" to complete his own name.

Design

Mad Origin is designed by Akira Amemiya, who previously directed SSSS.GRIDMAN and SSSS.DYNAZENON. Mad Origin's first form is based on the design of Full Powered Gridman through reverse calculation of the original design. The top half of the body is designed to be human-like, hence in the movie he was stated by Alexis as a mass of negative human emotions. The second half however is based on the colors of Alexis・Kerib, since the otherworldly being himself is absorbed into the Kaiju.

History

GRIDMAN UNIVERSE

Sometime after defeating Alexis・Kerib, Gridman's guilt from unwittingly possessing his latest host and partner, Yuta, draws Mad Origin's attention, who then ambushes the Hyper Agent. The evil entity proceeded to forcibly bond his essence to the multiverse, knowing his latent powers allowed him to spread chaos as much as possible and become invincible as a result. Mad Origin was thus also indirectly responsible for creating Yomogi Asanaka's home universe and causing Anti and Anosillus the 2nd's younger and older selves to exist as separate entities.

As Yuta reconciled with Gridman, Akane, who had Alexis liberated and submitted to her command with Instance Domination, confronted Mad Origin, which the latter recognized as a aggregate of chaos bringer particles born from humanity's negative emotions via their continued use of monsters. The duo's interference allowed Gridman, who just freed himself, to join the fray alongside Yuta in his new form, angering him as they brought their fight to Tsutsudjidai. As the fight escalated further, Alexis helped Gridman restore Yume, Koyomi, Chise, Gauma in his Dynazenon form, Goldburn, and Neon Genesis Junior High Students back to existence to deal with to Mad Origin's Noirdogma army. The process allowed Anti and Anosillus the 2nd to merge with their older counterparts, Knight and 2nd, and they then proceeded to join the fray. Since Mad Origin was already familiar with what everyone's powers and fighting styles, Gridman and his allies decided to try something new; Gridman combined with Dynazenon and the upgraded Goldburn into Rogue Kaiser Gridman, Gridknight combined with Powered Zenon into Full Powered Gridknight, and 2nd enlarged herself so she could don Sounderous in its power armor-like Battle Mode. Combined with Alexis・Kerib's might, the heroes successfully defeated Mad Origin... or so they believed. The chaos bringer entity recovered behind everyone's back and evolved by absorbing Alexis・Kerib as everyone helplessly watched.

Still, it was a futile effort as by that point, Gridman had figured out the way to defeat the monster mastermind. To Mad Origin's confusion and horror, Gridman bombarded him with his Fixer Beam just as the others barraged him with everything they had, leading to his physical form breaking down from a continuous cycle of destruction and restoration. To add insult to injury, Alexis・Kerib forced Mad Origin to endure such an assault from inside, stopping his attempt to escape. Afterwards he clashed with Gridknight which resulted in Powered Gridknight form's horn breaking off and injuring him in the eye, leaving him open long enough for Gridman to deliver the final blow, and finally destroying him.

Trivia

  • Mad Origin's voice actor, Nobutoshi Canna, previously voiced Takeshi Todo's computer in episode 1 of Gridman the Hyper Agent. This makes the monster's name rather pertinent as Canna, who appeared way back in the very beginning of Gridman media as a whole returns to voice an antagonist after 25 years had passed.
  • According to Alexis・Kerib, Mad Origin was the result of the Chaos Bringer particles released by mankind's overuse of Kaiju. It is thus speculated that so long as new kaiju in the Gridman setting continue to be created, the possibility persists that he may return, or a similar being may appear.
