"Bond... Nexus!"
- ―Komon before his transformation to confront Dark Zagi.
Kazuki Komon [1] is the main protagonist of Ultraman Nexus. He became the fifth Dunamist at the series finale.[2]
Personality
Komon has a kind, straightforward, and helpful personality. However, he occasionally shows a timid side and is easily fooled. Despite this, his past experiences have instilled in him a strong belief in helping others, enabling him to remain steadfast in the face of various challenges.
Although Komon joined NR to protect humans from Space Beasts, he initially felt uncomfortable with TLT's recruitment and existence. He also disagreed with the organization's priority of clearing alien Space Beasts before saving ordinary people, as well as erasing the memories of witnesses to cover up the existence of the organization and the Space Beasts.
Furthermore, as someone who was saved by Ultraman in the past, Komon's position differs from other NR members. He believes that Ultraman is not a threatening entity, which creates a barrier between him and other members and causes him to lose direction in the organization's difficult battles.
However, through countless battles, Komon overcame numerous difficulties, developed a strong character, and experienced personal growth. His beliefs and ideas have had a profound impact on many people.
History
Pre-Ultraman Nexus
When Komon was young, he nearly drowned in a river, but he was lucky to be rescued by an unknown person who encouraged him with the words "never give up". Although Komon was not very clear about the experience and believed that the rescuer was an extraterrestrial being, his most profound memory was the encouragement he received from the rescuer, which deeply influenced him and made him willing to help others. As a result, he voluntarily joined the Mountain Rescue Team of the Metropolitan Police Department when he grew up.Destiny - Satisfaction -
Six months ago, the disheartened Komon met a university art student named Riko Saida at the zoo and helped her retrieve a blown away painting. As a token of gratitude, Riko gave Komon a bottle of drink and the two struck up a conversation. This experience led Komon to develop feelings for Riko.Warning
Meanwhile, Shinya Mizorogi had already gained precognitive abilities and foresaw that Komon would eventually join NR. In order to achieve this goal, he manipulated Komon's relationship with Riko, pushing him into the depths of despair, and revealed the power of darkness to his former colleague Nagi Saijyo.
Little did Komon know that on the evening he first met Riko, her family had already been attacked by Nosferu, with Riko eventually killed by Mizorogi. She became the vessel for Dark Faust.
After Riko's secret resurrection by the dark powers, her relationship with Komon deepens and they become romantically involved. They often go on dates to the zoo, living a peaceful life together. During this time, Komon remains steadfast in his role as a member of the mountain rescue team, continuing to utilize his abilities in his work.
Ultraman Nexus
At the beginning of the series, Komon was on a mountain rescue mission, but due to the memories of his childhood drowning experience, he fell into a state of emotional depression and was unable to complete the mission as scheduled. Later, at the zoo, Riko encouraged him, hoping he could persevere and work hard to protect people's happiness and smiles, no matter what.
At this time, TLT-J selected Komon to join NR in order to increase its members. Later, Yoichiro Matsunaga forcibly investigated Komon and ultimately received orders to be assigned to NR. To maintain secrecy, Matsunaga also ordered Komon not to disclose TLT's existence and his new job to his family or related parties. He instructed Komon to go to TLT-J's headquarters, the "Fortress Freedom," before dusk. However, on his way to TLT, Komon was attacked by Pedoleon Kureain. In the crisis, Komon was unexpectedly saved by Ultraman and survived, but he also met with the NR members who were on their mission.Night Assault - Night Raid -
Later, Komon completed his training with NR and became a formal member. Upon learning about Komon's secret new job, Riko specially gave him a charm as a gift, named "Ganbarukuina-kun," hoping it would motivate him to continue to work hard and become a protector symbol. This symbol held a special meaning in Komon's heart and became the source of his continuous pursuit of improvement.Strange Creature - Space Beast -
After becoming a member of NR, Komon encountered Ultraman again on his first mission. Unfortunately, at the command of Yu Kirasawa and when Nagi mistook Ultraman for being on the same level as the Space Beasts, NR still took action to attack Ultraman, even when Komon tried to stop them.
When Ultraman was injured and transformed back into Jun Himeya, Komon and Nagi encountered him in the forest while searching for him. After fighting against Pedoleon Kureain, Himeya secretly left, and Komon and Nagi learned at this point that Ultraman was actually Himeya's secret identity.Giant - Ultraman -
While searching for information about Himeya, Komon accidentally stumbled upon some reports and photographic works about Himeya's past. After communicating with Himeya himself and his former colleague Megumi Sakuta, Komon gradually learned about Himeya's past and advised other members to stop delving further into the investigation. However, this incident caused a disagreement between Komon and Nagi, as their thoughts diverged.Ruins - Relic -
During an incident where a girl named Rina Sugiyama was attacked at a factory, Komon arrived on the scene and protected her. However, later on, the leader of MP, Saya Shuto, and her subordinates erased Rina's memories and showed Komon a survivor of a previous Space Beast attack. Through this event, Komon also came to understand why MP needed to erase the memories of victims.M.P. - Memory Police -
During a vacation, Riko invited Komon to her house and introduced him to her family. However, when Komon agreed, he received a message requesting the mobilization of the NR members. Just as Komon was about to leave, a windowpane fell from a high place. Komon successfully pushed Riko out of harm's way, but her right leg was still scratched by the shattered glass.
At that moment, Komon received a message from Mizorogi via his communicator, conveying the message "that was a warning," which made Komon deeply uneasy. As he participated once again in the battle between Dark Faust and Ultraman, the next morning, while investigating the scene, Komon discovered Riko lying on the forest floor. Subsequently, she was urgently taken to the hospital.Warning
Next, the MP department was monitoring Riko's health condition in the hospital when they discovered abnormal medical test results. They also learned about news reports of the Saida family's disappearance six months ago and notified Komon, providing him with the Saida family's address to search for Riko, who had escaped from the hospital and gone missing.Doll - Marionette -
However, when Komon arrives at Riko's home, he is surprised to find an empty room and a horrifying "family portrait" drawn by Riko. At the brink of mental breakdown, he was infected by the hidden Beast Cell unawares, hallucinated by the illusion of Pedoleons, and intensified his hatred toward Space Beasts. With the help of Himeya, he regains his composure. Still worried about Riko's whereabouts, Komon goes to the place where he first encountered Pedoleon Kureain and, together with Himeya, finds Riko in the forest. At this point, Riko has been controlled by Dark Faust and personally reveals to Komon the truth about what happened six months ago.
Later, Ultraman engaged in a massive battle against Dark Faust in the Meta Fields. As Dark Faust began to absorb Ultraman's energy, Komon fired at him to save Ultraman. This battle indirectly awakened Riko's memory. Mizorogi ordered Nosferu to attack Komon, but Riko regained consciousness and protected him, bearing the attack and sustaining fatal injuries.
After Nosferu's defeat, Riko, who had regained her human form, returned to Komon's side. She told him that she never regretted meeting him. In the end, Riko turned into particles of light and died in Komon's arms. Komon was left alone in deep sadness, standing in the same spot.Separation - Lost Soul -
After Riko's death, Komon fell into endless grief. During this traumatic period, he met a girl named Riko Yamamura at the zoo and had a brief encounter with her family. At that time, Mizorogi appeared before Komon and confessed to being the killer who had killed Riko's family and turned her into Dark Faust. He continued to create illusions of Riko to torture Komon and try to lead him into darkness. Himeya attempted to use phase interference to stop Mizorogi, but failed. Fortunately, Nagi, who also went to the zoo to look for Komon, arrived in time and successfully rescued him.Clairvoyant - Illustrator -
Afterward, Mizorogi even used members of the Yamamura family to deliberately place Riko on the forehead of Nosferu by killing Riko's parents. When Komon attacked Nosferu, he later discovered that Riko had been heavily injured by the impact of the light waves, causing him to experience immense trauma once again.Apocalypse
After this event, Komon, who was disheartened, began to be overwhelmed by negative emotions and temporarily left NR. When he fell into the illusion of Riko again, with continued encouragement from Himeya and accidentally stepping on "Ganbarukuina-kun", which was regarded as a "bond" talisman, Komon's consciousness returned to reality. He freed himself from the darkness in his heart and after killing Nosferu himself later, he returned to NR.
When he returned alone to the zoo where he first met Riko, despite seeing Riko's illusion again, he decided to let go of his emotions and let Riko live forever in his heart, continuing to be his motivation. At that moment, the illusion of Riko disappeared.Maze - Labyrinth -
Through this experience, Komon has become more resolute, often carrying Ganbarukuina-kun as a symbol of his bond with Riko when carrying out his duties. Later, while on a solo mission with Wakura, Komon learned about Mizorogi's past.Apocalypse
During the mission in the Land of Death, when Komon and others arrived, they found that Ultraman had already been defeated and had to fight Dark Mephisto, who had taken over Mizorogi's body. However, when Himeya regained consciousness and joined the battle, Komon injected him with pure energy using Chrome Chester Alpha to restore his light power.
After the battle, in the light, Komon briefly met Himeya and learned from him that someone would inherit the light.Hero
As the Space Beasts continued to appear, a blue-colored "Ultraman" emerged and fought against Grantella. After the battle, Komon discovered a suspicious man during his patrol and investigation revealed him to be a new "Dunamist". Through communication, Komon became friends with Ren Senjyu and promised to keep his secret. Afterwards, Komon frequently visited him at the amusement park.Ren - The Third -
Later, Komon discovered that Mizuo Nonomiya from MP was also ordered to approach Ren, and he received a warning from Kirasawa not to have any contact with Ren, revealing to him the existence of the "Unknown Hand" within TLT.Prayer
Through TLT's data investigation and computer analysis, Komon later discovered that Ren and Kirasawa were actually "Prometheus Children" from TLT's North American headquarters conducting the "Prometheus" project. He also learned that due to side effects of the experiment, Ren was in a life-threatening condition.Bird
Upon learning that Mizorogi lost his memory and escaped from TLT, Komon and Nagi went to arrest him. They faced Mizorogi again, and Komon expressed his unforgiveness and resentment towards the Riko incident, but also stated that he had overcome his dark emotions.
However, on their way back to TLT, they were ambushed by Hiroyuki Misawa. At this time, Ren sensed the battle and transformed into Ultraman to fight against Sawa, who had become Dark Mephisto (Zwei). To protect Komon and the others, Mizorogi transformed into Dark Mephisto again, and helped Ultraman defeat the enemy before sacrificing himself in the battle.Shadow - Unknown Hand -
When Sara Mizuhara from TLT's North American branch came to investigate TLT-J, the members of NR decided to invade the servers of TLT's North American headquarters to search for information related to the Unknown Hand. During the search, they unexpectedly discovered an Ultraman that had never been seen before, as well as disaster footage related to the Shinjuku incident. At the time, Komon and the NR members were confused until Sara provided an explanation. It turned out that this Ultraman had already appeared in 2004, and the Shinjuku incident was also caused by Ultraman and Beast the One.Blockade - A.D. 2009 -
After learning about Ren's involvement in TLT's human experiments, Komon and other NR members successfully convinced Wakura to rescue Ren. They managed to escape from the Fortress Freedom.Revolt
Prior to the final battle, despite Komon's attempt to stop Ren from risking his life on the battlefield, Ren insisted on engaging in a fierce fight against Izmael. Finally, Komon and other NR members witnessed Ren being sent to the hospital.Decisive Battle - Farewell -
After Ultraman defeated Izmael, NR members resumed their duties as the light was passed on to Nagi. Dark Zagi's plan officially began, and the final operation was launched. He first attacked Shiori and tried to attack Komon, but was saved by Wakura just in time.
At this point, Ishibori revealed his true identity to all NR members and confessed that he was Dark Zagi, the mastermind behind the murder of Nagi's parents and the one who turned Mizorogi into Dark Mephisto. His goal was to fill Nagi with hatred.
After Nagi transformed into Ultraman, she was immediately consumed by Lethe, leading to the resurrection of Dark Zagi. Witnessing Nagi being consumed by darkness, Komon bravely entered Lethe to save her. Eventually, when the light descended upon Komon, he gained the power of light and was rescued by Ultraman along with Nagi, landing in Shinjuku.
As Komon inherited the next light and received support from Nagi, he remembered the transformation method of the Dunamists from the past, shouting "Connect...Nexus!" and immediately transforming into Ultraman to fight against Dark Zagi, also saving the trapped Wakura. However, at the beginning, Komon appeared to be outmatched and completely suppressed by his opponent during the fight against Dark Zagi.
During the battle, Himeya and Ren suddenly appeared in Komon's consciousness, and Ultraman transformed into his previous forms and launched a counterattack. At this moment, people suddenly remembered the Shinjuku incident from several years ago and cheered Ultraman on. Inspired by the people's support, Komon finally unleashed his ultimate power and became Ultraman Noa. Due to Komon's unwavering faith, Noa's power reached its peak, enabling him to effortlessly send Dark Zagi into space and ultimately destroy him with immense power.
With Dark Zagi defeated, Riko appeared in Komon's consciousness, not just as a memory or an illusion, but to say an important sentence to him: "I believed in you, Komon-kun. I knew you would be able to protect everyone."
A year later, although Space Beasts continued to appear, TLT had minimized the disaster. Komon remained a member of the NR, fighting alongside the other three and constantly holding onto the hope of "never giving up" and fighting for the future.Bond - Nexus -

Trivia
- Takuji Kawakubo (Komon's actor) also provided the voice of Nexus in HEROES' VS crossover game and portrayed Shogo Tachibana (Sayuri Tachibana's husband) in episode 20 of Ultraman X.[3][4]
- Komon is the first protagonist to have a definitive girlfriend, Riko Saida. He also is the only protagonist to not become a Ultra host in the first episode. As a matter of a fact, he only became an Ultra host in the last episode.
- Before the series was cut down to just over 30 episodes, it was originally intended for there to be a time travel story where Komon would discover who saved him as a child. It was originally intended to be Nagi (his savior was wearing a Night Raider glove) in a time loop fashion.[5]
- One of the schoolgirls in SSSS.GRIDMAN has a pouch that has the same design as Komon's charm.
- According to Hiroyasu Shibuya, the appearance of Ultraman Noa was planned from the inception of the series. However, this information was initially kept confidential, so there were no objections to the creative decisions. As a result, Komon was chosen to become the Dunamist, which aligned with the overall narrative goals of the series.[6]
- The series revolves around the theme of "bonds," which is also central to its conclusion. Throughout the storytelling process, the concept of a relay race was used, with the identity of the final successor remaining unknown. Although the production team had already decided that the character who consistently supported the Dunamist would ultimately become the final successor, they hoped this approach would engage viewers and encourage them to think and speculate about the evolving narrative.
