"I gotta do it now!"

―Kanata's catchphrase

Kanata Asumi (アスミ カナタ Asumi Kanata) is the main protagonist of Ultraman Decker. He merged with the light of Ultraman Decker and joined the expert team GUTS-Select to fight against the Spheres that are threatening the Earth.[1][2]

Conception

Etymology

Kanata's entire name literally means the quote "I look towards tomorrow! Into the beyond!" (明日る、彼方まで! Asu o miru, Kanata made!).

Personality

Working at his grandfather’s rice cracker store, he is close to their neighbors and regular customers, and he leads a peaceful life.

He is cheerful and a little goofy, but he is a kind-hearted young man who cares for others. He never ignores someone in need, and sometimes goes overboard throwing heart and soul into whatever task is before him.

After the Sphere attack, his peaceful life is taken away and he is gifted Decker’s “light” when he stands before an enemy, ignoring all danger.

Although uncertain what it means to become an Ultraman, he takes to it optimistically and tries to use his new-found power for others. To this end, he joins the newly-reformed expert team GUTS-Select, and with his fellow young team members they stand up against the threat of the Sphere.[1][2]

History

Ultraman Decker

Kanata and his family own a rice cracker shop, Asumi-ya (明日見屋). Some time ago, his parents won a raffle that set them on a trip to Mars, leaving Kanata to help his grandfather at the shop.

One day, Kanata was at work when he went to the spaceport in Sorafune City to make a delivery, while dropping off a customer there as well. He offered some of his rice cakes to Ichika Kirino before being interrupted by Soma Ryumon, just when the Spheres descended. Kanata, Ichika and Ryumon helped to rescue a person trapped under the rubble before Kanata rushed off to fight the Spheres using a machinegun, but he was consumed by one of them.

Within the Sphere, Kanata's strong will reached the light of Ultraman Decker, who saved him from death and gave him his power, granting Kanata the Ultra D Flasher and Ultra Dimension Card to transform and fight against Spheresaurus, defeating the monster in battle. Decker then went to space to fight the other Spheres, but was knocked back down to Earth. Kanata was relatively unharmed but the Ultra D Flasher disappeared. Taiji Murahoshi noticed Kanata's will to protect others and offered him to join the TPU as one of its members while they reorganized their recruits into an Anti-Sphere team. Kanata decided to join them after his grandfather advised him to do what he felt was right. Day of the Attack

After a year of training in the TPU, the organization was looking to reform GUTS-Select, and were looking for potential candidates from among the new recruits. Kanata was put with Ichika and Ryumon on their final patrol exercise, during which Kanata got his leg hurt, forcing Ryumon to call off the journey. This put him at odds with Kanata, who wanted to keep going, but Ichika broke them up before an argument could happen. When Deathdrago appeared, the TPU students were ordered to return, but the three of them stayed behind to help people instead. The Ultra D Flasher returned to Kanata, who transformed into Decker again and defeated Deathdrago with the help of Miclas. Kanata, Ichika and Ryumon went to help the people affected by Deathdrago's rampage, ignoring their orders to return until Murahoshi appeared and reprimanded them, while also confirming their placement in GUTS-Select.
