When assigned to the new team SKaRD, Gento initially didn't know any of his subordinates. However, he diligently brings the team together, fostering mutual support in an unfamiliar environment. Besides mission planning, he also provides members with hints on finer details. He will lead the team in protecting Earth from monster threats in this challenging environment.
History[]
Pre-Ultraman Blazar[]
Gento Hiruma was born on November 3, 1992. During the years 2014 to 2015, he attended Global Guardian University, majoring in the Department of Humanities & Sociology. It was during this period that he crossed paths with the renowned Japanese monster research expert Kazunori Yokomine. Bonding over their shared interest in fishing, the two of them developed a strong mentor-student relationship.
After graduating from the Global Guardian University and the GGF Japan Officer Cadet School, Gento enlisted in GGF in April 2016 and participated in multiple kaiju eradication operations. During this period, he married a woman named Satoko, and they had a son named Jun. Subsequently, he assumed the role of the commander of the 1st Special Mobile Brigade, 1st Battalion, 1st Company.
However, due to GGF's internal secrecy and other considerations, Gento chose to conceal the substantive nature of his work as the front-line commander from his family. He informed his wife Satoko and son Jun that he was merely a member of the organization's Engineer Unit, and this concealment left Satoko and Jun unaware of his true responsibilities.
Three years before the series, on September 9, 2020, Gento and several SMB Unit members were assigned to be protective guards for Yu Dobashi at Test Facility 66 of the Space Systems Research Center in Gifu Prefecture. However, at 7:30 PM on that day, a severe explosion incident occurred within the experimental facility, causing chaos all around.
Dobashi was successfully evacuated by SMB to the outdoors, but when other members mentioned that there were still people trapped inside the building, he resolutely went in for a rescue. It was at this moment, in the corridor on one of the floors, that Gento saw a flash of light, thinking someone needed help, so he extended his hand. In that instant, he somehow bonded with the giant of light that would become known as Ultraman Blazar.
After the explosion incident, he had no knowledge of what had transpired within the research facility and only knew that the initial explosion had resulted in the disappearance of some researchers.Moonlit Memories
Ultraman Blazar[]
When Bazanga launched a night attack on Tokyo's Ikebukuro, Gento led the 1st Special Mobile Brigade (SMB) in the operation to counter and eliminate the threat.
Initially, the GGFJ General Unit planned to use special projectiles to penetrate Bazanga's body and hinder its advance. However, due to concerns about the risk of escalating the disaster, the headquarters prohibited the use of special projectiles to attack the monster. Instead, they demanded the utilization of other existing methods to deal with it. Faced with this restriction, the on-site commander had no choice but to order a retreat and establish a new command post.
However, Gento did not give up easily. He saw through the considerations of the headquarters and attempted to use the available resources to lure Bazanga into a location where the special projectiles could be used for an attack. But just as the plan was about to be executed, another reconnaissance team lost communication due to an attack from the monster. Since the special projectiles required two units to be effective, the situation became extremely urgent.
In the urgent search for a solution, Gento made a critical decision after careful consideration. He determined that the most likely successful approach was to personally head to the location where the lost team was last seen and take immediate action. While rescuing his teammates, he would lead Bazanga into the attack range of the special projectiles. However, after launching the special projectiles, Bazanga emerged unscathed, and the aerial support's ammunition was depleted, leaving them powerless to provide cover. Just when the situation seemed dire, Gento's Blazar Brace appeared, transforming him into Ultraman Blazar.
In the end, Ultraman Blazar successfully defeated Bazanga. After the intense battle, though all members of SMB were fortunate enough to survive, amidst the remnants of the battlefield, Gento discovered the Blazar Stone and fell into contemplation.First Wave
The day after the Bazanga eradication operation, Gento received an appointment as the captain of SKaRD under the command of GGFJ Chief of Staff, Retsu Haruno, through the issuance of Order No. 54 from the headquarters. As this appointment had not been made public yet, he initially didn't know any subordinates. While reviewing the members' profiles in a cafe, he met Emi Aobe, who guided him to meet the other SKaRD members. After a series of visits and formalities, he, along with all the SKaRD members except for Yasunobu Bando, proceeded to the base.
Furthermore, he requested the members to address each other by their names or nicknames, rather than using surnames, which caused some confusion among the members.
The crew soon received reports from the chief of staff that a civilian freighter had been sunk by an aquatic kaiju 30 miles south of Shichijojima Island. They learned that the kaiju was named Gedos after watching the news. The detachment began making preparations for a potential deployment. Teruaki was put in charge of updating the higher-ups on the unit's activities and monitoring the current events.
Subsequently, Gento and Anri Minami headed to the harbor to assist in the battle against Gedos. When Anri observed the heat exchanger behind Gedos using infrared, Teruaki Nagura suggested attacking the heat exchanger to immobilize it. however, Gento decides to take matters into his own hands and rushed in. After landing a shot, he prevented a fisherman carrying a harpoon from getting too close to Gedos. But then, the Blazar Brace manifested once again, transforming Gento into Blazar to confront Gedos. With Emi and Anri's assistance in disrupting the monster, the mission culminated in Blazar destroying Gedos.
After the mission, Teruaki and the others reported to a hangar underneath the base. They were introduced to Yasunobu Bando and Earth Garon, and together they received their first official order from the chief of staff. The Man who Created SKaRD
Days after the Battle of Gedos, Teruaki notified Gento about a series of incidents relating to destroyed teaterium storage tanks. The members suspected it was the cause of a kaiju and began their investigations, while resuming their rigorous training. Several weeks of data analysis later, Gento and the team formulated a plan to safely defeat the kaiju.
SKaRD received an alert about kaiju Taganular's appearance. As the commander, Gento and Anri boarded Earth Garon to carry out the mission. During the operation, they received an oral warning from the GGFJ Air Force Commander, stating that their actions were disrupting the operations of other units. However, through Gento's brief and decisive communication, the issue was quickly resolved, ensuring coordination and cooperation among all parties.
Earth Garon began using its main cannon to attack Taganular's hands, attempting to push the monster towards the target location. However, during the operation, Earth Garon's right arm suffered severe damage, leading to a series of system failures. In an emergency response, Anri discovered from the control manual that an emergency lever in the neck-shoulder junction could activate the backup power. Gento made the brave decision to undertake this dangerous operation alone. But at the most crucial moment, the Blazar Brace appeared on his arm once again. Undeterred, Gento chose to transform into Blazar and successfully defeated Taganular.
After the battle, Gento announced the good news to the members of SKaRD. Due to Earth Garon's outstanding performance, SKaRD officially gained initial command authority over countermeasure monsters and would now officially carry out missions. The Name is Earth Garon
After experiencing the events involving Leviera, Dorgo, and Alien Cannan, Gento gradually acclimated to the working environment at SKaRD. Simultaneously, he established a cohesive understanding with the team, cultivating a profound sense of cooperation. With the arrival of July, as Japan confronted high temperatures and drought, SKaRD SP transitioned into a power-saving and water-conserving mode. Additionally, they were in the process of planning upgrades for additional weaponry on Earth Garon.
Soon after, phenomena of "upside-down rainbows" appeared across various regions of Japan, which were regarded as precursors to rainfall. However, this phenomenon persisted for a consecutive seven days, marking an unprecedented anomaly in meteorological records. Emi speculated that this might foreshadow the imminent appearance of monsters. In contrast, Gento paid a visit to his mentor Yokomine to gather information and learn about the legends surrounding Nijikagachi.
Subsequently, disturbances in the forests near Mount Fuji and the sudden disappearance of local lake water signaled the arrival of Nijikagachi. Gento quickly returned to his unit upon receiving this information. However, when Earth Garon attempted to confront Nijikagachi, the creature absorbed atmospheric energy, causing a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure that led to the formation of seven typhoons encircling the Japanese archipelago. At this critical moment, Teruaki shared the legends of Nijikagachi with Gento, making him realize Yokomine, who seemed connected to the events, might have vital information. Gento sought out Yokomine again for further insights. It was during this encounter that Yokomine posed a question to Gento: "How do you perceive monsters? As adversaries to be eliminated?"
Gento believed that if monsters posed a threat to human daily life, they should be treated as enemies. However, he disagreed with the viewpoint that excluding monsters would lead to the collapse of the world's balance. He asserted that humans are a part of nature and, right or wrong, are a result of the Earth's evolution.
Nevertheless, Yokomine's response to Gento's stance was a rebuttal, viewing it as a typical example of human-centered arrogance. He displayed the seven-colored bracelet on his hand to Gento, revealing that he summoned Nijikagachi. Upon learning the truth, Gento decided to apprehend Yokomine, only to be incapacitated by Yokomine's beam of light, allowing Yokomine to escape the scene alone.
After regaining consciousness, Gento returned to the CP and requested a response to prevent further disasters. With Anri, he boarded Earth Garon to stop Nijikagachi, but it unleashed a powerful heat ray, disabling Earth Garon. Gento transformed into Ultraman Blazar but couldn't inflict significant damage. Nijikagachi fired its heat ray, causing a fiery disaster. Blazar reverted, leaving Gento unconscious in the forest.Rainbow Appears: Part 1
While Nijikagachi continued its destructive path across Japan, seven tropical cyclones gradually merged to create a massive super typhoon. During Gento's unconscious state, he caught glimpses of Blazar. However, he eventually woke up in a hospital room, under the watchful eyes of Teruaki and others. Learning about the ritual that awakened Nijikagachi, Gento began pondering the snake-like pattern on Yokomine's hand, suspecting a potential psychic connection between Nijikagachi and Yokomine—a crucial factor in stopping the creature.
The next morning, SKaRD discovered Yokomine fishing in Hidora City. Gento decided on a two-pronged strategy: first, they planned to equip Earth Garon with a newly armed railgun to confront Nijikagachi's potential weaknesses. Second, they aimed to persuade Yokomine, as his actions could lead to humanity's extinction. Gento stressed that if persuasion failed, they might have to consider extreme measures, possibly involving Yokomine's life.
Initially planning to approach Yokomine himself, Gento allowed Teruaki to take on this task. Accompanied by Yasunobu, Gento boarded Earth Garon for deployment. However, during the battle with Nijikagachi, Earth Garon Mod.2's railgun repeatedly missed its target due to excessive recoil.
After Teruaki destroyed Yokomine's bracelets, their residual energy was absorbed by Nijikagachi, making it even more powerful. Nijikagachi used an enhanced rainbow beam to disable Earth Garon Mod.2. At this critical moment, the Blazar Brace reappeared on Gento's wrist. Gento took the initiative, activating the APU to restore Earth Garon's power. As Nijikagachi closed in, Gento transformed into Blazar, engaging in a fierce battle. In the end, Blazar ascended into the sky, harnessed the rainbow and unleashed a new ring-shaped skill that successfully defeated Nijikagachi.
Some time later, Gento accompanied Teruaki to his counterpart's hometown to assist Teruaki's family in the post-disaster cleanup of their farm and observe the post-disaster condition of the local flora. Through their conversation, Gento conveyed that Yokomine eventually turned himself in to GGF but was released due to "insufficient evidence." However, Gento was certain that Yokomine must be somewhere fishing at this moment.Rainbow Appears: Part 2
In the following period, Blazar's consciousness took control of Gento's body for the first time, briefly assuming the dominant role. During this process, Gento unconsciously engaged in communication with Blazar for the first time. Despite his attempts to communicate with Blazar, it seemed to be not very successful. This interaction ultimately ended when the Blazar Stone suddenly became exceptionally hot, waking Gento up with a burn.Planet of Music
One evening, while Gento and his family were engaged in household chores, he was once again briefly under the control of Blazar's consciousness. Upon learning of Jun's strong interest in the monster egg discovered in Yamanashi Prefecture, and since the next day was a day off, Gento's family decided to visit Oniwaku Valley to witness the monster egg. However, upon their arrival, they saw members of the GGF's monster egg handling team and others investigating the monster egg. Nevertheless, as they witnessed the monster egg suddenly cracking open and hatching a Baby Demaaga, the GGF members immediately attempted to subdue Baby Demaaga using tranquilizer guns.
The screams of Baby Demaaga attracted the mother monster, Demaaga, which appeared suddenly in the vicinity. Nearby residents, alerted by the monster disaster alarm, evacuated the area as per the instructions of the GGF and the police. Upon receiving a notification from SKaRD, Gento subtly allowed them to take action and led his family along an evacuation route. During this time, Jun questioned Gento about whether it was right to destroy monsters, to which Gento responded that if they didn't eliminate monsters, they could destroy towns and cause even greater harm. However, Jun presented his own perspective: "I understand that GGF's mission is to protect everyone, but isn't that monster doing the same? Isn't that monster just protecting its child?" This left Gento in a state of inner turmoil.
To transform into Blazar, Gento used the excuse that "perhaps there are still citizens trapped in the disaster-stricken area" to separate his wife and child from him. However, during the confrontation with Demaaga, a disagreement arose between Gento and Blazar about how to deal with Demaaga. After an internal struggle for control, Blazar roared and nullified the GGF's third wave missile attack, transforming the Spiral Burrade into a cocoon of light. This successfully protected the Demaaga mother and child, sending them deep underground.
Afterward, Gento reunited with his family, and they joyfully embarked on the journey back home.Parent and Child
Due to the influence of the Demaaga incident, Gento began to feel conflicted about Blazar's will. However, the arrival of a meteor brought Gebalga onto the battlefield. Despite GGF setting up defenses in advance, Gebalga gradually broke through the front lines of the defenders. In this attack, Gento and Anri piloted Earth Garon together for defense. However, when Gebalga began to charge up for an EMP attack, Blazar's consciousness sensed the danger and took control of Gento. Blazar ordered Anri to maneuver Earth Garon to evade, but it was still affected by the EMP, causing it to become paralyzed and Anri to lose consciousness. Although Gento initially didn't want to rely on Blazar's power, he ultimately transformed into Blazar when there seemed to be no other way out.
During the battle with Gebalga, Blazar's consciousness sensed the danger posed by Gebalga. Ignoring Gento's desire to continue the fight, Blazar forcibly took control of his body and made him leave the battlefield. This later left Gento feeling dissatisfied with Blazar's actions.Escape
Due to Gebalga's EMP attack, which paralyzed the entire network, SKaRD received criticism from Haruno that evening. They were questioned, "Since the formation of SKaRD, have you ever individually defeated any kaiju?" To confront Gebalga, the team had to devise a new strategy. Because Gento had developed distrust toward Blazar due to their previous actions, he placed the Blazar Stone in storage locker and decided to proceed with the operation without Blazar.
On the second day, as SKaRD commenced the operation, Gento's former colleagues from SMB also came to assist. Despite successfully countering Gebalga's EMP ability through coordinated efforts within the unit, Gebalga remained a formidable enemy, resulting in Earth Garon being locked in a fierce battle. Witnessing this situation, Gento contemplated going to the rescue, but he recalled his previous distrust of Blazar, leading him to act alone and stow Blazar away in storage locker.
As Gento got up, he suddenly heard his inner self telling him to "go." Subsequently, he witnessed Blazar displaying his memory images. Through these memories, Gento finally understood Blazar's intentions at the time, which were to ensure his safe return and the shared goal of protecting life, both his and Brezza's. With these realizations, a resonance occurred between the two, the Blazar Brace reappeared, and the Blazar Stone flew out of storage locker back into Gento's hand. He transformed once again into Blazar, wielding the Tilsonite spear transformed into the "Tilsonite Sword," successfully defeating Gebalga.Let's Go, Blazar!
During the operation against Deltandal, Haruno personally called Gento and issued an important order, requesting him to monitor Emi. Subsequently, after Gento transformed into Blazer and defeated Deltandal, he met with Emi at CP. In response to Emi's inquiries, Gento provided her with a detailed account of the explosion incident that occurred at Test Facility 66 three years ago, including the events that transpired at that time, and tacitly gave her permission to continue her investigation.Moonlit Memories
A few weeks later, due to his busy work schedule, Gento missed Jun's school sports day. To make up for this, he invited Jun for an outing. However, when Jun saw how hard his father was working, he suggested that Gento needed some rest and relaxation. A few days later, during the operation to deal with Gavadon, when the GGF attempted to launch missiles to attack Gavadon, SKaRD's monitoring system detected that Jun and his friends were in danger of being crushed by collapsing buildings. Gento transformed into Blazer at the last moment, rescuing them just in time, and continued to battle Gavadon. Eventually, Blazer carried Gavadon into space, turning it into a constellation.
Later, he reunited with Satoko and Jun by the riverside, and Gento told Jun that he planned to take the whole family camping in the countryside during the upcoming holidays. The family then embarked on their journey back home.Betwixt Morn and Dusk
During the Mogusion incident, Gento was briefly affected by Mogusion's illusions and saw a damaged Earth Garon. However, after regaining his composure and readjusting his thoughts, he allowed Emi to pilot Earth Garon and set out with the assistance of the AI system EGOISS.Terror from the Underground
As time progressed, Gento, informed by Emi, familiarized himself with details and relevant clues regarding the V99 incident. Following Haruno's suspension, the team's operational activities faced frequent interference from higher-ups, resulting in the arrangement of nationwide touring dramas unrelated to the mission.
During the battles against kaiju, Gento transformed into Blazar multiple times to participate in combat, but this also took a toll on his body. Prolonged and intense fighting resulted in severe muscle atrophy and bone loss for Gento. Despite claiming to his subordinates that he only felt dizzy, in reality, he neglected proper diet and rest during this time. During a moment of discomfort, Blazar took control of Gento's body, knocking him out with a punch to force him to rest.
When a 60-meter-class Taganular appeared in Ibaraki, Gento attempted to engage, but due to physical reasons, he was assigned to stay at the CP by other team members. When an equally sized Taganular appeared in Nevada, United States, Gento used communication interference as a cover and transformed into Blazar, flying to the United States.
In the intense battle against Taganular, Emi hacked into the American broadcasting system, urging Blazar not to defeat Taganular. The beam emitted by Taganular successfully penetrated the "Third Wave" protective shield near the lunar orbit. The explosion's aftermath propelled the kaiju from the asteroid onto the moon, and the rebounding beam destroyed Taganular. Unable to evade, Blazar was ultimately engulfed in the explosion.Visitor 99
Later, although Gento returned to CP, he frequently experienced physical discomfort, often clutching his chest in pain. As Varallon continued to place bombs on the moon, leading to an alteration in the lunar orbit that posed a threat of colliding with Earth, GGFJ ordered SKaRD to pilot Earth Garon Mod.4 to eliminate Varallon.
Although Teruaki pointed out that such an operation would inevitably result in casualties, Gento acknowledged that the mission might be a life-or-death battle. Despite the risks, the team members decided to proceed with the mission. Gento proposed an additional task: he wished for everyone to return safely and granted the team members 18 hours of free time to say goodbye to the most important things in their lives.
Gento visited Haruno's residence, who had been relieved of duty, attempting to persuade him to return and entrusting Emi's safety to him. However, Haruno insisted that Emi was Gento's subordinate and required Gento to come back to restrain her.
That night, upon returning home, Gento spent his final moments with Satoko and Jun before leaving in the early hours. Satoko, sensing Gento's thoughts, bid him farewell. As the team began executing their mission, Gento, serving as the primary commander, along with three other members, headed to the moon. However, they faced a severe counterattack from Varallon before even landing. Under Varallon's assault, a massive explosion engulfed Earth Garon, rendering everyone unconscious. Upon forcibly waking up, Gento requested Blazar to guard their companions and transformed once again.
Though the transformation was successful, both were in a severely weakened state. After an intense battle, Blazar took Earth Garon away from the moon and attempted to correct Varallon's alteration of the lunar orbit. In a critical moment of Varallon's attack, Blazar chose to shield Gento, separating him from itself. The Approaching Third Wave
When other members regained consciousness, Earth Garon returned to Earth with Blazar, which was floating in space. However, Varallon had already advanced further, causing widespread devastating disasters in Tokyo. Although everyone safely returned to the base, Gento's body could no longer endure. During the one-hour period of Earth Garon's repairs, Gento's old acquaintances from the past arrived with numerous fighter jets to join the support operation.
While Earth Garon was undergoing repairs, Gento expressed gratitude to Blazar for protecting his life at the last moment. He informed Blazar that SKaRD would take over the battle from here. However, Blazar stood up and, for the first time, spoke in Earth's language, expressing his desire to fight alongside Gento.
Tears streaming down his face, Gento looked at him and decided to temporarily hand over all command of SKaRD to Teruaki. He explained that he had been sentenced to absolute bed rest, preventing his participation in the operation. Subsequently, he transformed once again into Blazar to confront Varallon, telling Blazar, "Next time... don't let go again."
After a prolonged battle, both sides found themselves in a stalemate. In Inner Space, Gento noticed the bracelet given to him by Jun and Satoko's wedding ring on his left hand began to glow. Eventually, he crossed his right arm in front of Blazar's radiant left arm, unleashing the "Blazar Beam" that defeated Varallon, successfully protecting Earth from the third wave of invasion.
After the members of SKaRD gathered once again, when Emi inquired about where V99 would be heading, Gento suggested that it might be towards the distant galaxy at the other end of "Blazar.
Upon Gento's return home, Satoko and Jun warmly welcomed him back. Gento also expressed to Satoko, "I'm home."The Ones Who Embrace the Earth

Trivia[]
- Gento Hiruma is the first Ultraman television series protagonist who is both a team captain and has a family. Prior to this, such a character was only seen in the form of Ginga Yumeboshi from Ultraman Nice.[6][7]
- He is also one of the few main characters with a family, following Daigo Madoka from Ultraman Tiga and Shunichi Maki from ULTRAMAN.
- He is also one of the few human hosts with a team captain role, following Dan Moroboshi from Ultraman Leo and Shingo Sakomizu from Ultraman Mebius.
- Warabino mentioned in an interview that he feels a deep connection to the name “Blazer.” When he received the series project proposal, the title of the series had not yet been decided. During the interview shoot, he was wearing sneakers from a certain brand named “Blazer.” The director Kiyotaka Taguchi discovered this name through an internet search when deciding on the title, and thought, “So you were wearing those shoes.”[8]
- Warabino also shared that he bought the “Blazer” shoes because he thought they looked cool. His wife had bought the same pair a few days earlier, and Warabino did not know the name of the shoes at that time. A few days later, his wife told him, “The shoes you wore before are called ‘Blazer.’” This made Warabino feel that it was fate.
- As the lead actor in the television series, Warabino is older than Susumu Kurobe from Ultraman and Hideo Ishiguro from Ultraman Orb, who were both 27 when they appeared in their respective series. This makes Warabino the oldest lead actor in the series.
- Regarding how he portrays Gento, Warabino mentioned that, although not entirely the same, he did not feel any discomfort in playing the role. By trying to experience Gento's emotions from everyday life, he believes that he was able to fully embody Gento throughout the filming period without feeling uneasy.[9][10]
- In the series, Gento’s private clothing is actually Warabino’s personal property.
