Genegarg (ゲネガーグ, Genegāgu)[1][2][3] is a shark-like space monster that debuted in the first episode of Ultraman Z.

A predatory extraterrestrial monster, Genegarg was possessed by the wicked parasite Celebro, who used the beast to steal the Ultra Medals and the Z Riser from the Land of Light. It later made its way to Earth under Celebro's control and crashed onto the planet, awakening several monsters across the globe from their hibernation, before it was ultimately slain by Ultraman Z, being the first kaiju defeated by the young hero.

A second Genegarg fought Z and his companion Ultraman Trigger years later.

Conception

Etymology

Genegarg's name comes from the ancient Greek word "γενειον" (Geneion), which translates to "jaws", which ties into Genegarg's concept of being the "Jaws from Space".[4]

Design

According to an interview with Kiyotaka Taguchi from the Ultraman Official Archive magazine and Tsuburaya Galaxy post, the Genegarg suit was made by modifying the Magatano-Orochi suit. The remodeling was made due to a huge portion of the budget had already been used for Sevenger's suit. In addition, Genegarg also carried over Magatano-Orochi's mouth-munching mechanism.[5] Later in 2023, designer Kengo Kusunoki had confirmed that the lower body design of Genegarg was inspired by Odontotyrannus, one of his early Ultra Kaiju tribute concept art.[6] Confirmed by the designer, the red marks on Genegarg are derived from Devil Splinter, possibly indicating corruption from the one held by Celebro; however, said markings remain on the Genegarg that appears in 'Episode Z' so it may just be natural.[7]

History

Pre-Ultraman Z

Genegarg Raid

Genegarg steals the Ultra Medals from the Land of Light

Genegarg originally started as one of the many bioweapons cultivated in a planetary-scale civil war that was part of Celebro's Civilization Self-Destruction Game, the latter having observed its development while possessing technical officer 5648. Jugglus Juggler Chronicle: Ja no Michi wa Hebi Presumably while possessing Genegarg, it's implied that Celebro had used the monster to destroy the planet's inhabitants (per the rule of his own game) before swallowing Bullton and acquiring the Devil Splinter along the way. A Warrior's Principle While the Ultra League were in the middle of their fight against The Kingdom, Genegarg intruded the Land of Light to steal several Ultra Medals and the item needed to use them. The Appearance

Ultraman Z

The monster made its way to Earth where it was pursued by Ultraman Z and Ultraman Zero, using Bullton to stall to reduce its pursuer to one. When it crash-landed on Earth, it encountered Sevenger, who joined in fighting the beast with Ultraman Z. At first, it defeated both of them, but Ultraman Z returned as Alpha Edge after bonding with his new host, Haruki Natsukawa, who was killed inside Sevenger. Z managed to defeat Genegarg, scattering the remaining Ultra Medals elsewhere.

However, when GAFJ's Monster Research Center collected its remains, one of them unleashed the parasite Celebro from inside, who then took possession of Shinya Kaburagi. Chant My Name!

During the aftermath when Genegarg made the collision course with Earth, it unintentionally woke up several Kaiju that hibernated deep underground for some time.

Trivia

  • Suit designer: Kengo Kusunoki[8]
  • When Genegarg's temperature rises, it utters a slowed down Mothra cry.

Ultraman Trigger: Episode Z

Genegarg and Deathdrago emerged from the ground just after Ultraman Trigger fought against Gazort. He was being overwhelmed by the two of them until Ultraman Z Gamma Future appeared. However, even with the two of them, they were still defeated by the two monsters' brute strength. Akito Hijiri and Yuna Shizuma manage to locate Trigger's lost Power Type GUTS Hyper Key and return it to him, allowing Trigger to change to Power Type while Z changed to Beta Smash. They wrestled against the two monsters and destroyed the both of them with the Zestium Beam and Deracium Beam Torrent respectively. Ultraman Trigger: Episode Z
