GRIDMAN UNIVERSE is a Japanese animation film released on March 24, 2023, serving as a crossover between SSSS.GRIDMAN and SSSS.DYNAZENON.

The film premiered at Anime Expo 2023 in the US on July 3.

Production

Tenatively titled GRIDMAN×DYNAZENON, the project was first mentioned at the end of the Japanese broadcast of the final episode of SSSS.DYNAZENON. During TSUBURAYA CONVENTION 2021 SPECIAL PROGRAM on December 13, 2021, it was revealed to be a film, helmed by the same staff behind both series. Further information, including the cast and movie's official name, was announced at Ultra Heroes EXPO 2022 Summer Festival on August 26, 2022.

The release date, more of the cast and a trailer were unveiled at the GRIDMAN UNIVERSE SHOWCASE event on November 20, 2022, which was also livestreamed. Compilation films of SSSS.GRIDMAN and SSSS.DYNAZENON were screened at theaters from January 20, 2023 and March 10, 2023 respectively to promote the movie. Both showings rewarded visitors with a different illustration card and new voice drama episode to be watched on TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION.

Another trailer released on February 10, 2023 revealed Gridman's new form and the film's theme song.

Various events were held to celebrate the film's release, such as an art exhibition titled INHERITANCE UNIVERSE held from March 31 to April 12, 2023. Limited time collaborations with mobile games Medabots S, Azur Lane and Symphogear XD were held in April, July and August respectively. A lottery where 10 winners would get the opportunity to meet Gridman through Zoom began in April, with the meeting held on June 10. A talk show by Tatsuomi Hamada was held after a screening on June 7. Another exhibition called GRIDMAN WORLD was held from June 9 to June 25 in Osaka, from July 14 to July 30 in Fukuoka, and in Tokyo from October 27 to November 20. 4D screenings of the film began on June 30.

On August 1, a DVD and Blu-ray of the film was announced, as well as a stage show called GRIDMAN UNIVERSE SHOW to be performed and livestreamed on April 7, 2024. Blu-rays of the compilation films were later announced on August 10. Exactly one year after the film's release, on March 24, 2024, the film was added to numerous streaming services in Japan. On July 8, 2024, it was added to TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION.

Synopsis

Tsutsujidai High School.

In the classroom after school, Yuta Hibiki draws and erases Gridman in his notebook over and over again. Once upon a time, this world was created and destroyed by a single girl. The ones who saved the girl's heart were Hyper Agent Gridman, who came from another dimension, a monster with a heart she created, and Yuta and the others.

Yuta, who has moved on to the second grade and is in a different class from Rikka, decides to confess. Their daily life in such a peaceful world began to crumble with a roar.

In the midst of Yuta's crisis, Gridman suddenly appears and says

"The balance of this world is about to collapse".

Before long, the crimson dragon Dynarex, Gridman's collaborators, the Neon Genesis Junior High Students, and Yomogi Asanaka, a resident of another world, appear in front of Yuta one after another.

While hiding his feelings for Rikka, Yuta's extraordinary life begins.

• Utsumi owns a Kuta Chara Ultraman plush toy.
• Utsumi and Yuta watch an Ultraman stage show on DVD titled Battle Live Heroes . The cover features Ultraman Legend, Jean-Bot, Mirror Knight, Dark Faust, Mother of Ultra, and PAL, who are all voiced by Gridman voice actors.
