Ancient monsters of Loch Ness

Loch-Ness-Monster-Paintings-Ultraman-August-2022-01

Within his underground lab, placed inside a subterranean series of caves, the reclusive scientist and infamous "Monster Professor" named Nakamura has decorated the rock walls with painted effigies to the various dinosaurs and similar prehistoric animals that once inhabited Loch Ness, 100,007,000 years ago.

While being interviewed by two visiting reporters from the magazine Young Graph, Nakamura identifies some of the paintings as Ceratosaurus, Triceratops, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, Ichthyosaurus, Pterodactylus, Eryops, and the Dimorphodon though Nakamura further notes that there were even more species than the ones mentioned. When questioned on the possible genus the recently reported monster in Lake Kitayama, Nakamura believes it's likely a Diplodocus, not unlike the Loch Ness Monster herself who may have also killed and devoured a colleague of his named Nikaido, 15 years earlier.

Little did both the reporters and the newly arrived Science Patrol knew that Nakamura was in fact Nikaido in disguise: he had survived his encounter with The Diplodocus of Loch Ness, taking her egg back to Japan, where he hatched and raised it into the now fully grown Jirahs, the dangerous monster in Lake Kitayama. The Mysterious Dinosaur Base

Trivia

  • While the complete details of Nakamura's past is never fully revealed, it's strongly suggested that Jirahs is a direct offspring of the Loch Ness Monster even if the explanation of both being diplodocus seems off, seeing how the former shares little resemblance with a genus of diplodocid sauropod.
  • While all were once living species of real-life fauna, Nakamura's descriptions of the various Loch Ness animals are exaggerated kaiju-style versions, somewhat common to the more fantastical vision of dinosaurs in 1960s pop culture. This includes the stegosaurus as violent as the ceratosaurus and Nakamura stating the diplodocus' neck being 20 meters in length alone - a measurement far bigger than its real-life counterpart.
  • Zaurs, an amphibious dinosaur from Fight! Mighty Jack and Redman, is also a monster from Loch Ness though one who resembles a quadrupedal sauropod better.
  • The Ceratosaurus has a strong resemblance to Neronga.

Amagi and Furuhashi duplicates

Amagi-Furuhashi-Duplicates-Ultraseven-May-2020-05

After being captured by Alien Iyros, UG agents Amagi and Shigeru Furuhashi were imprisoned in a frozen state onboard the invader's spacecraft. Using advance technology, Iyros cloned his prisoners in order to steal much-needed spaceship fuel from Ultra Guard home-base.

Despite fooling the other team members, Dan Moroboshi could tell that the duo were impostors from their subtly inhuman eyes. Shortly thereafter, Dan shoots the two duplicates during the robbery attempt, revealing their artificial origins to Captain Kaoru Kiriyama as their bodies disintegrate into a black liquid. The Man Who Came From V3

Trivia

  • The shoddy duplicates are directly spoofed in episode 15 of Patlabor: The New Files, "The Woman Who Came from the Stars", itself a dense parody of the original Ultraman and Ultraseven television series.

Living-Doll-Mirrorman-October-2021-04 Robot-Clown

The unnamed robot clown was an agent of The Invaders and the direct servant of the disguised doll monster Kinder. Remaining mute and only communicating through facial expressions and body language, the robot clown was first employed to break into Dr. Hasunuma's home to retrieve the plans for his invention, Catcher A-1: a detection device and energy shield that could halt alien aggressors of all types. While unsuccessful in finding said documents, the robot clown manage to murder all the security guards stationed at Hasunuma's home with its unhuman strength as well as injuring Etsuko, Dr. Hasunuma's daughter, upon its escape.

Later that same day, the clown comes across Ichiro, son of Dr. Mitarai Kenichi, head of the SGM, by some vacant train tracks and gives the boy the Kinder doll. Unaware of the danger, Ichiro allows Kinder into his home where the monstrous spy locates the Catcher A-1 documents, takes photos with it doll eyes, and violently incapacitates Dr. Mitarai and his eldest daughter Asako much to Ichiro's shock.

Kinder and the robot clown reunite that night in a junkyard but are soon confronted by policemen and SGM members, leading to the robot clown accidentally electrocuting himself during the chaos against an outdoor electrical board. Just before its destruction, however, the robot tosses Kinder to safety. Chase Kinder: The Doll Monster!

Big ants

Big-Ants-Mirrorman-December-2021-01

The Invaders' latest operation involved the enlarging of insects into mutant monsters with the use of cosmic radiation. The giant vermin were to spread disease and impede the planet's grain supply to ultimately cause a global famine. During the height of the crisis, the SGM were swamped with reports of the monstrous vermin's activity across Japan, including big ants damaging a fruit ranch in Izu. The Monster That Dwells in the Fairy

Trivia

  • While the big ants were only mentioned in dialog, they're a separate subspecies of 'big vermin' from the onscreen forms of Haebun, Gokibura, and Mothgojira, all of whom are based upon flies, cockroaches, and mosquitoes, respectively. This detail suggests The Invaders' plan involved more pest-types beyond the three.

Under orders from Ururu, Terrano and his swarm of yellow bats destroy a radio tower and a power generator that knocks out the electricity in the nearby city: all this to disrupt a meeting between D-Force, the JSDF and government officials.

Surrounding the governmental building where the meeting is held, Terrano issues an ultimatum of surrender to the humans while the killer bats attempt to enter inside. However, the invading bats meet resistance by Ai Tachibana from within and the rest of the D-Force Izenborg team from without. Many of the yellow bats are killed in the conflict but the survivors fly back home after Terrano's own destruction, having been freed from the monster's mind-control. A Crisis! Love and Goodness

Giant shark

Giant-Shark-Ultraman-Jonias-April-2022-01

  • In episode 6 of the original Ultraman series, it was mentioned that a giant great white washed up on shore covered in wounds, thought to be caused by Guesra.

The One Who Sleeps Below

One-WhoSleeps-Below-Ultraman-Great-Feb-2021-03

For more information on the Earth as it appears in the Ultraman Series as a whole, please see its respective article.

Shortly after UMA launches a specialized satellite created to repair holes in the ozone layer, a mysterious red algae covers the oceans, killing all life it comes across. Jack Shindo and Jean Echo discover that the sea monster Kodalar is connected to the killer algae, having emerged to defend the Earth and take revenge on humanity for bringing devastation to the oceans. Additionally, UMA discovers an ancient metal disc near Kodalar's underwater lair, covered in mysterious inscriptions which reads: “One that was bound to the deep, One that was born to the sky, One shall be called from its sleep, and the darkness shall follow the cry”. The 'One that was born to the sky' soon reveals itself as the spacefaring dragon Kilazee, first seen from deep-space observation satellites. The identity of The One Who Sleeps Below, however, remains a mystery. Days later, Kilazee enters Earth's orbit, destroying cities from high above, while Kodalar began attacking coastal areas after successfully defeating Ultraman Great in battle.

As the chaos continued to escalate, UMA activated the ozone repair program as an attempt to calm the two monsters and ease their attack, but a massive energy pulse took place in the vicinity of the satellite system in charge of the operation, causing the skies across the world to flash in many bright colors and hum a strange rumbling noise. From this bizarre chain reaction, Colonel Arthur Grant of UMA realized who the third creature is: The One Who Sleeps Below is the very Earth itself. A sentient organism in its own right, the Earth has summoned Kilazee and Kodolar to serve as its apocalyptic avengers against the harmful presence of humanity. The Age of Plagues Nemesis

Trivia

  • Heavily inspired by the Gaia Hypothesis, the concept of the Earth having living sentience and using created or conjured agents (giant monsters or otherwise) to protect itself from harmful invasive elements have been explored in numerous fiction the world over. This same concept would later be revisited in the Ultraman franchise in Ultraman Max (it's hinted at the series' start that the overpopulation of mankind has forced the Earth into sending monsters to re-balance nature), Ultraman Gaia (An arc in the series features three Nature Control Machines designed by an unknown species to eliminate the Human Race and leave the planet healthy enough to support a new dominant race, while the final three episodes have multiple native monsters arrive on Earth's behalf to assist humanity against the alien swarm of Dobishi), and Ultraman Z (a set of five monsters were summoned in an attempt to destroy the newly activated Ultroid Zero).

Pink-skinned triclops

Pink-Triclops-Ultraman-Great-May-2022-01-ver3

This one unnamed pink-skinned triclops appeared briefly in issue one of Nemesis Comics Ultraman: Towards the Future miniseries. As Ultraman Great flashes back to his past battles, the three-eyed monster is shown fighting the hero and alongside Majaba and a crawling Barrangas: an event that never occurs in the television series proper.

Trivia

  • The pink-skinned triclops is one of several original monsters who erroneously appears in the comics' flashback sequences to the television series, including Unidentified Aquatic Kaiju and Giant Shark.
  • While this minor monster lacks an official name, online artist EarthBaragon has given it the fan-made moniker of Tridevo (tri as in three + devastation).[7]

UMA security robots

UMA-Security-Robots-Ultraman-Great-February-2021-02

In an attempt to reach an oni-like enemy in space who's attacking the Earth below with his vast demonic powers, Jack Shindo and his martial artist friend Ace break into a UMA air force hanger at night in order to steal orbital jet fighters for their mission. After fighting off the hanger's armed guards, the two are then confronted by a pair of imposing security robots, twice their height and armed with laser-shooting visors. Narrowly dodging one of the robot's deadly eye-beams, Ace quickly disables the mechanical sentries with his shuriken. Ultraman: Negative One

Trivia

  • Unlike the intelligent and heroic paramilitary group seen in the main television series, the UMA organization featured in the American comic spin-off is a vast worldwide military force undermine by totalitarianism and corruption, hence the presence of the fearsome robot guards and Shindo and Ace's need to steal from UMA after failing to receive help through official but otherwise antagonistic channels. This uncharacteristic take on UMA likely resulted from a lack of understanding of the source material and the grim and gritty story trends of comics back in the 1990s.

Clowns from the dream world

Dream-World-Clowns-Gridman-May-2020-01

This sinister team of clowns were sentient hallucinations created by the monster Dazzlba and served as henchmen for Kahn Digifer and Takeshi Todo within the dream world that the three antagonists held dominion over. While looking human, the clowns were more bestial in nature, incapable of speech and making high-pitch grunts instead. They were extremely acrobatic in their fighting skills while also being armed with various handheld weapons.

After Gridman and his allies destroyed Dazzlba within Cyberspace, a dream world version of Gridman, imprisoned and awaiting execution, broke free from his restraints and battled the clowns, each of them fading away upon their defeat. The Execution, My Hero!

Trivia

Extraterrestrial amorphous organism

LevieraParentRender

An unknown extraterrestrial amorphous organism appears briefly, both in mention and as an illustration within a military document, in episode 4 of Ultraman Blazar, "Thus Fought Emi".

Twenty years ago, classified documents and cell samples of an extraterrestrial amorphous organism, which arrived on Earth attached to a meteorite and found to have strong regenerative capabilities, were stolen by former GGFJ Chemical Department researcher Hiroshi Sonezaki, who seized the opportunity during the confusion that arose from the GGF's digital transition.

During the studying, researchers found out this organism would dodge from spraying gun's flame, while suspended from biological activity under the effect of liquid nitrogen, when using previous solution for defrosting, it shall regain its activity.

In 2005, Sonezaki established the chemical company Novaio after he left the GGF, and would later synthesize these cell samples and artificial Clionidae engineered by a second-tier subsidiary of Novaio to cultivate a new and more aggressive lifeform, the strongest man-made sea angel he dubbed "Leviera".

This creature's existence was completely unknown to the public and most of the GGF, as Bazanga was previously said to be the first extraterrestrial kaiju to come to Earth.

CM Kaiju

GankiryuRender

The CM Kaiju (劇中CM怪獣, Gekichū CM Kaijū) that briefly appears in the Japan Kaiju Damage Insurance Company advertisement in Ultraman Blazar episode 22 "Insurance Hero" is a repurposed Gankiryu (ガンキリュウ, Gankiryū) from the 2023 independent tokusatsu short film of the same name. [8][9]

As the episode serves as a tribute to Ultraman episode 25 "Mystery Comet Tsuifon", Gankiryu uses the roars of Dorako, the only kaiju out of the three who did not appear in the episode. The kaiju also has Magular's roar mixed in with Dorako's.

The Gankiryu suit was borrowed from the Sukagawa Tokusatsu Archive Center and refurbished for its appearance in Ultraman Blazar. It previously appeared in Gankiryu, the independent tokusatsu short film of the same name, which was showcased at the Amateur Kaiju Movie Contest held by Kiyotaka Taguchi, who is also the main director for Ultraman Blazar.

Humans

Government Official

The government official is a character in Shin Ultraman. He is an official appointed by the Japanese government.

When the Japanese government celebrated the ceremony to establish a partnership with Mefilas, he attended the ceremony as the representative of the Japanese government. He thus witnessed the scene of the SSSP and the Ultraman grabbing the space belt device. After the partnership with Mefilas was blown, he was confronted by Mefilas, who was restored to his alien appearance. The latter showed a look of helplessness at the blow of the partnership when he became gigantic.

Later, when Zetton appeared in Earth's orbit, he was assigned by the government to forcibly take away Kaminaga, who had come to inform the SSSP members of the situation, and he threatened the lives of the SSSP members without hesitation. However, when he was rejected by Kaminaga, who declared that he would destroy humanity before Zetton, he realized that the situation was unfavorable and decided to withdraw with other self-defense team members from the office. Shin Ultraman

Trivia

  • Yutaka Takenouchi, who played the role, previously portrayed Prime Minister's adviser Hideki Akasaka in "Shin Godzilla." In the movie, his attire and behavior are similar to Akasaka's. According to screenwriter Hideaki Anno, the appearance of this character was intentional and designed to connect the movie's world view with "Shin Godzilla." However, this connection is difficult to achieve in the film, so a scene was arranged for Takenouchi to appear as a government official in the movie.
