Elly[1] is a main character in Ultraman Max, She is the android of DASH.
History
Ultraman Max
Elly serves as the intelligent Android operator for DASH. Throughout the series, she along with the robot Coco is responsible for controlling the majority of Titan Base's operations and functions. She primarily operates in the command room, handling communications and data analysis. With her overwhelming computational abilities, Elly is considered the central figure of DASH. In the event of an invasion of Titan Base, her incapacitation would equate to the loss of its capabilities, making her an indispensable key figure in the base.
However, due to her lack of understanding of human emotions, Elly typically speaks in polite language and maintains a neutral tone. Since the beginning of the series, her interactions with DASH members have revealed a deeper range of "emotions", showing a growing curiosity about human behavior and emotions, as she attempts to understand them. Through this process, she becomes more human-like, gradually forming a closer relationship with her teammate Kenjiro Koba.
When the Space Cats arrived on Earth disguised as meteorites, Tokyo experienced a phenomenon where many citizens lost their memories over the course of nearly a month. As the three Space Cats gathered in Tokyo Bay, their abilities also caused the nearby Titan Base to go into a state of shutdown. Although Elly, as an Android, was not affected by the Space Cats, her fellow DASH members' amnesia caused them to perform poorly during missions as they struggled to follow her commands, much to her dismay.
However, she remained calm and guided Ultraman Max, who had also lost his memory, into battle. After informing him of the existence of Max Spark and providing him with information about Max's activities, Elly reiterated and awakened Max's belief in protecting the Earth and their comrades: "The people standing beside you right now are those who are striving to protect this planet. They are your comrades. You don't need to remember anything. Just remember that you fight for peace and for the sake of your comrades".
At the moment of defeating the Space Cats, she couldn't help but shed tears witnessing Max's comeback victory. This seemed to have a profound impact on Elly's emotions. Afterwards, she praised Max's performance in front of all the team members, acknowledging his ability to create new finishing moves even in dire situations, demonstrating his exceptional abilities.Who am I?
As Christmas Eve approached, Elly and the members of DASH were shopping halfway through the town when they encountered an elderly man operating a mysterious machine. Suddenly, they spotted a flying monster. The old man exclaimed joyfully, "That's Unizin!" However, due to a malfunction in the mysterious machine, Elly's android functions temporarily ceased.
After being repaired by the elderly man named Kori and having her functions restored, Elly was compelled to assist him in capturing Unizin. It is said that Unizin is a monster capable of traveling between the future and the past, flying along an elliptical orbit around time with a cycle of 12 years, briefly appearing for a few seconds on the night of December 24th. Dr. Kori planned to trap Unizin in a crystal for capture. Therefore, the two began gathering tools needed for the capture in the forest, such as branches of elm trees, a cane, and discarded batteries. During this time, Elly also inquired with Dr. Kori about his encounter with Unizin years ago.
Dr. Kori then shared with Elly his childhood experiences, recalling the times when he used to decorate the Christmas tree with his family. He recounted his first encounter with Unizin while searching for the red fruits of the Idesia tree in the forest. Although he ultimately failed to find the Idesia fruits, witnessing the disappearance of Unizin shimmering in the moonlight deeply moved Dr. Kori, inspiring him to become a scholar. Upon learning of Elly's disappearance, the DASH team located her position and suspected that she had been kidnapped by Dr. Kori. However, Elly steadfastly expressed her desire to assist the doctor. Just then, Unizin appeared in a radiant glow, sealed within a barrier formed by branches of elm trees. Dr. Kori attempted to retrieve the crystal containing Unizin, but Unizin made no attempt to escape, merely gazing at him.
However, due to the particle effect from Unizin's wings, objects around started disappearing into the spacetime. Ultraman Max appeared and erected a protective shield to prevent further damage. Consequently, Dr. Kori ceased his attempt to capture Unizin, withdrew the staff made of Idesia wood, and released Unizin. Unizin turned to the doctor, expressed gratitude, and then vanished. In the place where Unizin departed, Idesia branches fell down.
Elly believed that Unizin's return to Earth was to deliver Idesia's fruit to Dr. Kori. She also grasped the meaning of Christmas, which is to bring joy to everyone and to make others happy.Elly of Christmas
One day, during shooting practice, Koba felt troubled by his poor performance. Elly offered Koba some advice, suggesting he adjust his shooting posture. Suddenly, Elly's condition became strange. She informed Koba that someone was entering her brain system and then pushed him to escape from the Titan Base. Koba followed her and reported Elly's abnormal situation to Captain Shigeru Hijikata. However, simultaneously, through Elly, the Titan Base's systems were taken over by unknown individuals, rendering all fighter jets and the base inoperable. Additionally, a dimensional disturbance occurred in space, and a spaceship appeared.
Captain Hijikata instructed Koba to rescue Elly and investigate the enemy. Meanwhile, Elly found herself restrained but managed to clear the brainwashing virus by rebooting her system, thus regaining her senses. It was then that a man controlling Elly emerged — Kerus, an associate of Kesam, the Space Saboteurs from Nebula KJ-K5 who had previously threatened Earth with destruction. Concurrently, Kaito Touma and other members also recognized the appearance of a spaceship in space as belonging to the Space Saboteurs, leading them to believe that the saboteurs were behind the unfolding events.
Elly analyzing the situation, communicated with the Titan Base. She began reporting her status and the appearance of missiles in space targeting UDF bases worldwide. Furthermore, due to the enemy extracting data from her computer, the defense systems became powerless. Additionally, Elly's computer was being used to guide the missiles. Elly attempted to seek help from the captain to destroy herself, but at that moment, Kerus returned, and communication was cut off. In order to protect the Earth, the UDF decided to destroy Elly. However, in an attempt to save Elly, Koba arrived at the room where she was imprisoned after battling Kerus. Elly pleaded with Koba to destroy her. However, Koba persuaded her and attempted to take her away, but they were discovered by Kerus.
Under Koba's precise shooting, the two managed to escape danger and flee from Kerus's base. Upon arrival, Kaito and the others provided support to Koba and Elly. Kaito handed the injured Koba over to other teammates and transformed into Max to confront Kerus, attempting to deactivate the missile guidance program implanted in Elly. As Max flew into space and destroyed the missiles, Earth and Elly were finally safe. However, Koba sustained injuries from the battle and needed to be hospitalized for a week. Elly visited to offer her condolences and presented Koba with a new pair of DASH gloves. Before leaving, she flashed Koba a radiant smile.Elly Destruction Directive
During the gravity anomaly incident caused by Dark Baltan, the command room of Base Titan experienced weightlessness, resulting in Eily's systems malfunctioning and her mech becoming non-functional. Under Hijikata's command, Koba worked diligently to reboot Elly. Finally, through a romantic gesture, Eily was revived, and the gravity anomaly in Base Titan was rectified. They then piloted Dash Mother into action. However, when faced with a large number of Dark Baltans, they halted their attack, waiting for an opportunity.
After the event, the bond between her and Koba grew closer, and together with others, they bid farewell to the departing Tiny Baltan and Dark Baltan.Welcome! To the Earth: Part 2: Farewell! Alien Baltan
The UDF Japan Branch is conducting an experiment on the new defense system "Dimensional Force" designed to protect the Titan Base, utilizing the principles of the vanished Subject Phantom. However, Dr. Yotsuya, the lead researcher involved in the experiment, exhibits peculiar behavior. As the energy of the Titan Base is released, Pigmon, encountered previously in the Subject Phantom incident, appears. Pigmon warns everyone of the imminent arrival of Red King. Shortly afterward, Red King briefly appears in the city. According to Pigmon, Red King's presence on Earth is due to someone summoning the bioenergy sealed within the Subject Phantom. Kaito believes that this is a result of Dr. Yotsuya's experiment with Dimensional Force, but Dr. Yotsuya has already disappeared.
Dr. Yotsuya then appears before the DASH members, claiming to have deliberately summoned Red King. Seeking revenge against Max, he fires a beam using the gun-shaped Dimensional Force. This action results in Pigmon entering Elly's body.
Pigmon, merged with Elly, began to speak human language and expressed affection for Kaito through Elly's body. Kaito entrusted the search for Alien Shamer to Pigmon and Mizuki Koishikawa, then transformed into Max to begin the battle. As Alien Shamer targeted Max, intending to inject Dimensional Force, Mizuki and Pigmon arrived just in time. Pigmon, using Elly's body, absorbed the energy to protect Max. However, Pigmon was affected by the Dimensional Force and was sent back to the Subject Phantom. Alien Shamer, attempting to flee, was cornered and defeated in a building corner. After the event concluded, Elly still retained the memory data from Pigmon's possession. Within these memories, she discovered information that was incomprehensible to robots yet incredibly remarkable. Lastly, with a silent farewell, she bid goodbye to Pigmon. Alternate Dimension World
One evening, after Scout Berserke was defeated by Max, the city returned to peace. Mizuki turned to Ellie, inquiring about when Earth would regain its tranquility. However, according to Ellie's predictions, the probability of humanity achieving peace and prosperity within 50 years was 62%, while Mizuki's likelihood of survival after 50 years was only 28%. This revelation filled Mizuki with profound anxiety.
The next morning, an Auto Maton suddenly activated in the city center, broadcasting a message to humanity. The message demanded an end to warlike activities and the consumption of fossil fuels in economic endeavors. It warned that if humanity could only progress by polluting the Earth, then civilization should be abandoned and regressed. The message's sender, identified as the Delos People, declared that if humans didn't cease economic activities within 30 hours, they would destroy all the DASH bases globally. Auto Matons were deployed worldwide, and people across the globe heard its message.
Under the command of Captain Hijikata, Kaito and Mizuki piloted DASH Bird No.3 deep into the underground. Elly noticed Mizuki's melancholy and offered her encouragement before the mission commenced. However, an unexpected incident occurred, causing Dash Bird No.3 to encounter a malfunction. Mizuki suffered severe injuries and briefly ceased breathing. Kaito desperately performed CPR, striving to revive her. Then, miraculously, Mizuki's breath returned. Elly, upon learning this through the life sensor, was moved to tears of relief.Prelude to Ground Annihilation
After being overpowered by Berserke, Max lost his radiance and assumed a statue-like form of bronze. The influence of Auto Maton had already spread worldwide. However, DASH remained undeterred. Through analysis of Max Spark, they discovered its capability to provide solar energy to Max. Thus, they devised the "Max Operation", utilizing Max Spark to transmit energy. With this, Max successfully resurrected and began to counterattack. Eventually, they defeated Berserke. DASH ultimately regrouped, and after witnessing Max's departure from Earth together, they captured the moment with a commemorative group photo.
Seventy years later, humans fulfilled their agreement with the Delos People and embarked on a journey to observe the galaxy. Among the members were the grandchildren of Kaito and Mizuki. Elly was present to bid farewell to these members. At this time, her hair was white, yet she showed no apparent signs of aging.Hold On To! Future

Trivia
- Elly is the first female robot character in the series to serve as a permanent member of the defense team.
- Within Titan Base, there is a dedicated charging room designed exclusively for her to maintain the power supply she requires.
- The character prototype of Elly is based on the Komachi character that appeared in episode 17, "The Town Beauty," of the series Ultra Q: Dark Fantasy directed by Takeshi Yagi. However, in terms of Eily's behavioral patterns, they were designed independently by the actress portraying her, Hikari Mitsushima.[2]
- Initially, Hikari Mitsushima auditioned for the role of Mizuki Koishikawa. However, following Shusuke Kaneko's directorial judgment, she was promptly chosen for the role of Elly.[3]
- According to Shusuke Kaneko, Elly was designed as an android character, unable to convey rich emotional changes or modulations in speech. Consequently, during Hikari Mitsushima's performance, she was cautioned by fellow actors that "your lines sound too stiff," leading to stress-related weight gain. Therefore, in the later stages of the series, Kaneko began exploring ways to allow Elly to have more active and developed portrayals. Additionally, other regular directors typically at least "adjust" Elly's role.[4]
