Bat Man 1

The "Bat Man".

In January, to celebrate his son Koichi's birthday, Matoya and Nomura were in the office preparing gifts. They worked together to make plastic models of tanks and fighter planes. Having lived through World War II, Matoya was puzzled by his son's desire for weapon toys. However, realizing he hadn't been able to properly care for his son for a long time, he eventually accepted this fact.

As Matoya and Nomura were about to head home, they were suddenly attacked by E-Bats. The two barely managed to dodge the bat's attacks and then saw a figure with bat wings behind the window of their headquarters. They rushed back to the scene, but the figure had vanished, leaving behind a note with "119" written on it.

The next day, while Inspector Machida and the SRI team were investigating the figure seen the previous day, they received a call from a mysterious person claiming to be "Bat Man." On the call, "Bat Man" demanded that they bring 10 million yen in cash to the Hachiko statue in Shibuya at 5 PM on January 13. Inspector Machida proposed an ambush at the scene, but Maki believed that yielding to threats was unnecessary and suggested waiting for the enemy to take the next step. Meanwhile, Matoya planned to use the opportunity to uncover the true identity of "Bat Man."

However, that night, the SRI headquarters was again attacked by the E-Bats, and they received a threatening letter demanding an increase to 20 million yen, to be delivered to the rugby stadium at 1 PM on January 14. On the 14th, the SRI and the police placed a briefcase at the rugby stadium according to the threat letter and set up an ambush. At that moment, a man dressed in black appeared on a motorcycle and took the briefcase. When the police surrounded him, the man used a jet device to fly into the air and successfully escaped.

Bat Man 2

Katsuichiro Iwai

On Koichi's birthday, Matoya needed to compare photos of the man in black taken by Saori with those of past criminals. Therefore, Maki, Nomura, and Saori attended the birthday party, while Misawa and Matoya stayed in the office to investigate the identity of the Bat Man. During the photo analysis, Matoya noticed that a man named Katsuichiro Iwai (岩井 勝一郎, Iwai Katsuichirō) bore a striking resemblance to the man in black in the photos. Meanwhile, a large gift package addressed to Koichi arrived at the Matoya home. Inside was a remote-controlled tank, which Koichi immediately began to play with. At that moment, a swarm of bats suddenly burst through the window and flew into the room. Maki, who was on lookout outside, quickly came to rescue Koichi and destroyed the tank, causing the bats to stop their activity. Upon examination, they discovered that the bats were actually mechanical devices controlled by the tank’s remote.

Matoya began a thorough investigation into Iwai’s background. In reality, Iwai was the mastermind behind criminal cases handled by the Mitaka Police Station. He had previously killed a friend on the way back from a tea party and disguised it as an accident, then burned down his house. He was eventually arrested. However, he had escaped from prison a year ago and had been missing ever since. At that time, Matoya had exposed the case as a murder through the analysis of the burned friend's remains. This led Matoya to believe that the man in black was indeed Iwai.

When Matoya went to Iwai's home to inquire about Iwai's status after his escape, Iwai's wife, Sachiko, said, "Iwai's escape must be related to Sachiko's death..." Matoya felt unwell and collapsed. It turned out that Sachiko was actually a disguise used by Iwai. He had drugged the tea, causing Matoya to lose consciousness. The next day, Saori hurried to Maki’s room, where she found a newspaper reporting that Matoya’s funeral was to be held at Tensonji Temple.

Maki arrived at the scene and found Matoya lying in a coffin, appearing to be in a deep sleep. Upon inquiring with the priest who had conducted the funeral arrangements, he learned that a man had come the previous evening. To everyone's shock, Matoya, who was believed to be dead, suddenly awakened as the coffin was being carried. It was soon discovered that Matoya had only been in a state of simulated death induced by the drugs. Subsequently, the SRI, in conjunction with the police, conducted a raid on Iwai's residence to apprehend him. There, they discovered a knife embedded in a calendar marking January 19. Further investigation revealed that Sachiko, Iwai’s wife, had actually passed away two years earlier on January 20. Maki realized that the "119" from the paper received by the SRI matched this date. As a result, he decided to place a transmitter in Matoya’s car and set a trap to catch Iwai when Matoya returned home.

Bat Man 3

Death of Iwai/Bat Man.

The trap was successful. Disguised as a police officer, Iwai attempted to hijack Matoya’s car and crush it using a press from a scrapyard. However, Maki and his team intervened in time to stop him. Iwai’s motive stemmed from his frustration over being unable to be with his deceased wife during his imprisonment, which led him to harbor a grudge against Matoya and seek revenge. Iwai, mimicking the behavior of a bat, taunted both the SRI and the police while hanging from a steel structure. Nevertheless, when Matoya threw a metal pipe at nearby power lines, the resulting electrical current flowed through the steel frame, electrocuting Iwai and causing him to fall amidst his screams.
