Ultraman Wiki

Demon Slicing Meteor Sword (斬鬼流星剣, Zanki Ryūseiken) is the seventeenth episode of Ultraman Arc.

Synopsis[]

The alien that appeared before Yuma and Shu is called Zangill, the space samurai. According to him, the "infernal dark shogun" kaiju from another dimension is sending kaiju into this world!?

And just as he said, a kaiju army appears in the city! When Yuma and Zangill go against the kaiju, Ultraman Arc's sword strikes!

Shu Ishido's Diary[]

Today, I was relieved to know an official investigation started at the mountain region of Hoshimoto City, where the dimensional rift opened. We were finally able to take the first step towards Mr. Zangill's wish.

Right after the incident with Gedos and Taganular, I headed to the GDF HQ and made a full report to the top brass, up until the moment I separated from Mr. Zangill.

That was when I explained everything that Mr. Zangill had told me, including the fact that he was no ordinary alien, but a being that came from "the border between this and the next world," the existence of the Infernal Dark Shogun Hellnarak, and its plans to establish his shogunate by sending ghost kaiju eggs through the dimensional rift and much more. I also raised awareness regarding the need for counter-measures against its plans.

My superiors then stared at me as if I was insane.

However, protecting this world from the hands of Hellnarak was a task entrusted to Yuma and me by Mr. Zangill. We could never precipitously put an end to the last request of a samurai who risked his life in battle.

If it was not for Mr. Zangill's assistance the other day when fighting the first ghost kaiju, Mogusion, Ultraman Arc might not have won in the first place. Besides, had Taganular continued to advance the energy plant would have been destroyed and there might have been an unprecedented catastrophe.

I mentioned this as well and continued trying to persuade them in earnest.

In the end, the undeniable fact that the GDF's attacks did not work on the ghost kaiju managed to convince the higher-ups. They decided to immediately investigate the dimensional rift and approved the implementation of sonic weapons. The latter will be using the recordings of Zangill's blade kept by SKIP's Hoshimoto City Branch. By using it, we can immediately materialize any ghost kaiju, which we expect to continue to appear. Zangill might have left this world, but we'll continue to preserve his will.

And much like us, Ultraman Arc was also entrusted with Mr. Zangill's strong will. At least that's what I feel. If that were not the case, there is no other explanation for how he was able to show such an incredible fighting technique against Taganular. Having full control of all three types of armors, Galaxy, Solis and Luna... This tactic could be called a doppelganger technique.

Putting an end to the group of Taganulars with a single blow was truly magnificent swordsmanship, or maybe... Galaxermanship? There was also the bow and arrow technique which decimated the flock of Taganulars that crowded the sky, in the blink of an eye. That extraordinary strength was surely something he couldn't have achieved on his own.

We currently have no way of knowing how Mr. Zangill had communicated his wishes and how Arc understood him. Arc fought fiercely to the very end, in a desperate state, following the footsteps of Mr. Zangill. That fact itself is all that matters. Arc truly inherited his will.

In a way, the same goes for me. Would saying this be a bit presumptuous? The excitement of finding someone who shared my thoughts was extremely pleasant. He was the one to notice the smell of my coffee beans. He called me a barista. And not only that, but a "barista of great fame."

If it were not for the borders dividing us, those with the same interests would be able to connect regardless of planet or world. The happiness I felt when he drank the coffee I had poured will be forever engraved in my heart. Even if I face great hardships in the future, this memory will become my support and encourage me to keep going.

Speaking of which, there is just one thing I regret. When his historical drama way of speaking was being discussed, I was really excited about the coffee, and ended up blurting out that "I like dramas about history." In reality I have no knowledge on the subject.

This makes me think that I should dive more into Japanese historical novels in addition to the mystery novels I read. This will become yet another present he left me. When I was pouring my last cup of coffee today, I ended up murmuring

"To a tasty cup."[2]

Trivia[]

  • This episode is the second in the series to have a clear connection to Ultraman Blazar.
    • Zangill mentions Gento Hiruma, saying that he also kept his identity as Ultraman a secret, and later referring to him as "a friend beyond this dimension."
    • Ultraman Blazar Arc 17
When Zangill watches Arc using the Demon Slicing Meteor Sword, he briefly sees the image of Ultraman Blazar overlapping him.
    • To create a distinct scene from how Blazar defeated Gedos, the kaiju is split open and roasted like a grilled fish.[5]
Arc Cooperation Request 03
  • The final scenes of this episode were filmed at Tsurumaki East Park in Tokyo.[6] On the day of filming, the weather was overcast from the morning, but as they shot the final scene, the sun peeked through just a bit. Cinematographer Satoshi Murakawa found the perfect angle, capturing the scene in a single, continuous shot without any retakes.[7]
  • According to this episode's director, Tomonobu Koshi:
    • The flying Taganular horde was depicted using three re-painted soft vinyl toys, two of which were made for Ultraman Blazar The Movie: Tokyo Kaiju Showdown, while the third was newly re-painted by Koshi himself.[8]
    • They came up with the Luna Armor afterimages switching to Solis Armor because they wanted to have the Taganular army use their beam attacks and needed a way for Arc to defend against it. He admitted that while it showcases Arc's imagination, it seems slightly overpowered, and he joked that the afterimages' blue Solis Armor was like a limited edition soft vinyl figure.[9]
    • The calligraphy for the "Demon Slicing Meteor Sword" kanji was done by voyager's TAKERU. The production team asked him to after remembering he had done calligraphy for props at Ultra Heroes EXPO New Year Festival.[10]
