Deltandal (デルタンダル, Derutandaru)[1][2][3] is a species of kaiju who first appeared in the fourteenth episode of Ultraman Blazar.

Subtitle: Moonlight Kaiju (月光怪獣, Gekkō Kaijū)[1][2][3]

Conception[]

Etymology[]

Deltandal's name is derived from the Greek letter delta, which is represented in uppercase with the symbol Δ, matching the triangular shape of Deltandal's body.[2]

Design[]

Deltandal was designed by Kengo Kusunoki, who was also responsible for designing Bazanga and Taganular, with Takahiko Waki in charge of the modelling of the flying puppet suit.[4][5]

According to Kengo Kusunoki, the design of Deltandal aimed to create a Kaiju resembling a "modern saucer creature," with its foundation drawing inspiration from the frequent appearances of triangular UFOs during the 1989 Belgian UFO wave. Additionally, following Kusunoki's concept, Deltandal was portrayed as a kind of "descendant of pterosaurs."[6][7]

History[]

Ultraman Blazar[]

Deltandal[]

Originally suspected to be the "third wave" of space kaiju after Bazanga and Gebalga, Deltandal was actually a subterranean Earth Kaiju who had awoken in response to some unknown stimuli and was now moving around the world at high speeds in a low Earth orbit, using the cover of cumulonimbus clouds to hide its presence (and presumably, as a nesting ground). Over the next two weeks, the shockwaves generated from Deltandal's hypersonic maneuvers across the globe resulted in minor infrastructural damage, which had the GGF on close observation until it took down one of their patrol aircraft and damaged several satellites in low orbit, prompting them to take action and mobilize the SKaRD.

The SKaRD's first encounter with Deltandal was in an aerial dogfight over the seas of Japan with the Earth Garon in hot pursuit, but Deltandal's hypersonic speed and extreme maneuverability meant that Earth Garon couldn't even hope to catch up. Earth Garon attempted to use its missiles to take down the kaiju, but Deltandal effortlessly outmaneuvered the assault and even countered with light bullets of its own, eventually ascending into the atmosphere past the mecha's radar range. With little fuel left, Earth Garon was forced to disengage.

With Deltandal nowhere to be found, the SKaRD resumed investigations and managed to deduce that the kaiju was moving between cumulonimbus clouds and that it was an Earth-born creature based on the nucleotide sequence obtained from its molted skin. Soon, the SKaRD were informed of a Deltandal sighting over the Pacific Ocean, and moved in to engage with the kaiju with the Earth Garon Mod. 2, now equipped with remote-controlled wire-guided hypersonic missiles. With Earth Garon's arsenal, the SKaRD managed to keep Deltandal from ascending past the atmosphere, but were facing trouble landing a hit. To assist his team, Gento transformed into Ultraman Blazar.

With Blazar on the assist, the SKaRD successfully hit Deltandal with one of its wire-guided missiles, causing the kaiju to slow down temporarily. The Ultra followed up with the Rainbow Slash, landing a direct hit on the kaiju. Deltandal, now enraged, charged towards Blazar, as he summoned the Tilsonite Sword and briefly engaged the kaiju before finally destroying it with the Raidenz Finish.Moonlit Memories

Deltandal would later reappear as a wandering spirit before being vanquished by Zangill. The Wandering Zangill

Retroactively, this particular type of Deltandal is later named as Deltandal F (デルタンダルF, Derutandaru Efu), more specifically the Fighter Type (戦闘機タイプ, Sentōki Taipu) to distinguish itself from its another, larger brethren in the future.[8] Battle in the Sky

Trivia[]
  • Suit actor: Yuto Nagachi
  • A staple of main director Kiyotaka Taguchi's films, the Blazar VS. Deltandal fight scene was shot in one long take. As such, the Deltandal suit was designed on the assumption that the moving parts were to be composited on top of the raw footage[9], and thus it is thought that two suits were made: a flying doll for the action scenes, and a guignol-style puppet with moving parts for close-up shots.
    • For scenes where both the head and arms were moving, three actors were required to puppeteer the moving parts via wirework.[9]

Deltandal B[]

A larger variant of Deltandal surfaced from the open sea and headed towards the Isotake Base after the testing of an experimental electromagnetic wave weapon by the GGF triggered its awakening. After being met with an unsuccessful missile assault by the GGF, the kaiju bombarded the base with a barrage of its Moonlight Bullets. Due to its attack pattern and distinction from its smaller brethren, Teruaki grants it the codename of Deltandal B (デルタンダルB, Derutandaru Bī), also known as Bomber Type (爆撃機タイプ, Bakugeki-ki Taipu).[8] Equipped with the new Mod. 3 flight unit, Earth Garon sortied and managed to keep up with Deltandal B's speed, but was struck out of commission by a Moonlight Bullet after a failed shot of the Earth Fire.

Deltandal B then retreated into the ocean before appearing off the coast of Cape Nagigazaki, retracing Earth Garon's flight path back to the SKaRD's headquarters. With Anri piloting and Yasunobu managing weapon systems, Earth Garon Mod. 3 took off into the skies to face Deltandal B again, this time aiming for the kaiju's orbs, which control its propulsion. But seeing as they could not land a clean shot due to Deltandal B's relentless assault, Gento transformed into Ultraman Blazar Firdran Armor to help his team, deflecting any Moonlight Bullets that came their way.

In retaliation, Deltandal B began charging up energy for its largest Moonlight Bullet yet. As targeting the orb could result in an explosion that would engulf the surface, Blazar lifted the kaiju into the stratosphere, giving Earth Garon the chance to destroy the orb in Deltandal B's chest, before Blazar finished the colossal kaiju with the Tilsofird Enraizan. Arrival of the Third Wave[]

In response to the incoming arrival of the Third Wave, multiple Deltandals would appear across the globe only to be stopped by Ultraman Blazar and Earth Garon. It would later be revealed that the appearance of the Deltandals was as a result of them defending the Earth as their territory from a new threat. Visitor 99

More Deltandals emerged following Varallon's arrival on Earth, joining the other Earth monsters in eating the space monster's organic bombs, thus preventing them from exploding and allowing Ultraman Blazar to defeat Varallon. The Ones Who Embrace the Earth

  • Weight: 14,000 t
  • Origin: Underground, Earth
  • Flight Speed: Mach 9
Powers and Weapons
  • Burrowing: The exact context to this ability is unclear, but Deltandal is said to be a subterranean monster, hence at least having the capacity of navigating itself underground as a form of transportation.
  • Molting: Deltandal sheds its skin as part of its natural life cycle.
  • Deltandal Moonlight Bullet (デルタンダル月光弾, Derutandaru Gekkō-dan)[10]: Deltandal gathers energy into the core in its chest and fires a powerful energy ball. This energy ball appears to have thermobaric qualities, as it sucks in large quantities of air surrounding it before exploding violently.
  • Fireballs: Deltandal fires a barrage of blue fireballs from its mouth.
  • Energy Bullets: Deltandal can fire numerous energy bullets from its back as a defensive measure to target opponents pursuing it.
  • Energy Barrier: Deltandal can project a blue energy barrier to block attacks for a brief moment.
  • Hypersonic Flight: Deltandal can fly at hypersonic speeds of up to Mach 9 and operate in territories well beyond the flight limits of modern aircraft. In addition, it can weaponize the shockwaves generated from pushing past the sound barrier, which is said to be able to tear even Earth Garon apart at close range.

Powers and Weapons
  • Deltandal Moonlight Bullet (デルタンダル月光弾, Derutandaru Gekkō-dan)[10]: Deltandal gathers energy into the core in its chest and fires a powerful energy ball. Unlike the first Deltandal, Deltandal B drops barrages of Moonlight Bullets like a bomber aircraft, or can charge massive amounts of energy for a single gigantic one.
  • Tough Hide: Deltandal B's hide is strong enough to withstand direct hits from Earth Garon's Earth Fire with as little as a scratch.
  • Hypersonic Flight: While it usually cruises at a slower speed, Deltandal B can accelerate to Mach 9 if needed.
