is a Japanese actor and suit actor, best known for his portrayal ofIn 2022, he was a motion capture actor for Ultraman in Shin Ultraman and the character's CGI model was based on him.[2]
Career[]
Furuya appeared in many Toho films prior to starring in Ultraman. Wanting to become a film star, he was reluctant to be the suit actor for Ultraman.[3] Suit acting was an uncommon profession at the time, and he was called a "stuffed toy actor" .[4] After playing Ragon and Kemur in Ultra Q, he did not want to suit act anymore,[5] and was unsure of how the alien should act,[6] but was convinced by the staff. He was chosen by Tohl Narita, who designed Ultraman, after liking his portrayal of Kemur.[5] The suit was tailor-made for his body.[5] Furuya requested to be uncredited for portraying Ultraman, but was credited anyway.[3]
Tohl Narita wanted him play Ultraseven too, but he turned the role down as he was already going to portray Amagi.[5] Although he was pleased to be able to show his face,[7] he later stated he would have liked to have played both roles.[5] After this, Furuya retired from acting and established Bin Promotion, a management company to organize appearances at events.[8] The company closed in 1991, and Furuya would return to acting in 2008.[8]
Furuya wrote about his experiences and hardships as Ultraman's suit actor in a book called A Man Who Became Ultraman [9] which released on December 21, 2009.
,Furuya's portrayal of Ultraman was popular, especially overseas, so he frequently makes guest appearances at conventions and events.[4] In 2013, at the age of seventy, Bin Furuya put on the latest Ultraman suit at the Tokyo International Film Festival.[10][11][12] In 2016, he established a successor to Bin Promotion called Shin Bin Promotion.[8]
In 2022, a body scan of Furuya was done to produce a S.H.Figuarts figure for Ultraman.[5] He had to lose 9 kilos in a month to prepare for the scan.[5]
