Ayumi Miyama is a character from Ultraman Leo.
History[]
Ultraman Leo[]
Ayumi is the daughter of Sakiko Miyama and the younger sister of Izumi Miyama. Their family took in Gen and Toru, who have lost all their loved ones and are homeless due to the Silverbloome attack.
She and Toru go to the same elementary school and the same class. Although she usually speaks a little cheeky, she still silently cares about Toru's side in private.
When she noticed Gen and Toru were missing during Black End's assault, she led the other children in a search. She organized them so they could attack Black Directive, saving Toru and Gen in the process.
In the series finale, she and the rest of the family learn that Gen is Leo's identity and say goodbye to Gen, who is about to leave for a trip. The Terrifying Saucer Creature Series! - Farewell, Leo! Setting Off for the Sun

Trivia[]
- According to a 2001 interview with Kaoru Sugita in the book Ultraman Leo in the Heart:[1]
- Before playing Ayumi, Sugita appeared in episode 31 as the White Flower Spirit. She was a huge Ultraman fan and often visited tokusatsu sets. Her enthusiasm stood out, and the staff asked if she was really that passionate. She replied, "Yes! I really want to see the tokusatsu set up close!"
- During her visits, she learned from the crew that Ultraman Leo was facing budget cuts and might only last ten more episodes. They couldn’t afford new outdoor sets, so they reused ones from other dramas and focused more on character-driven stories. As they cast roles for these stories, Sugita was selected to join.
- At the time, the oil crisis made filming hard—there was little heating during cold winter shoots. Still, Sugita was excited to be part of Ultraman Leo because it gave her more acting opportunities.
- Even as a child, she felt the family drama parts needed to have real emotional weight—they couldn’t be boring. Talking about her co-star Tsunehiro Arai (who played Toru), she said they later worked together again in Kinpachi-sensei. They had a private joke during that time: "Since our characters in Leowere so different, let’s just not mention that show."
- She was surprised by the ending—especially how the Black Directive, who had been such a strong villain, was defeated by a group of kids. Those children were actually the staff’s kids, most of whom had little or no acting experience. Some crew even asked Sugita to help guide them. With tight deadlines, the atmosphere was tense, and there were doubts about finishing the show on time.
- Sugita, having seen how hard things were for Tsuburaya Productions, chose not to talk about it. When her male classmates excitedly talked about the show, she stayed quiet—she didn’t want to ruin the magic for them.[2]
