An Alien Town is the fifth episode of the first season of ULTRAMAN. It adapts chapters 15 to 18 of the manga.

Synopsis

After uncovering evidence of alien involvement in a string of bizarre homicides, SSSP agent Moroboshi contacts an informant inside an alien enclave.

Plot

The episode begins with Alien Igaru giving messages of support to Rena Sayama in his apartment for her upcoming Handshake Event through a chat room in the internet when he stumbles upon death threats directed to his idol by one of her haters, someone under the username of 'Buttr*****', much to his anger.

Meanwhile, the two detectives Yosuke Endo and his partner Kurata are investigating a string of murders where the fifth and latest victim that month being a part-time worker named Takeo Ichikawa. The murders perplexed them as like previous ones, the victim was reduced into a human-shaped bloody splatter on the wall. Seeing a poster featuring Rena Sayama stained by what had left of Takeo disturbed Endo greatly for some reasons. Just then, SSSP officials led by Moroboshi show up and take over the case. As this happens, Alien Igaru looked on the scene of the crime among the pedestrians who looked on behind the police line. Said turn of events left Endo disgruntled, as he remembered SSSP had long disbanded for over a decade, and his mood only worsened by his younger partner mentioned a possible connection with an Ultraman lookalike on the other day.

On the next day in SSSP base, Ide and Edo are discussing Moroboshi's findings and concludes the latest serial killings being the possible work of an alien. Edo then wonders about what Shinjiro felt regarding his latest mission.

Shinjiro, who happens in a good mood, is standing alone on the rooftop of SSSP base waiting for someone, taking his time looking at the news of Rena Sayama's upcoming Handshake Event through his smartphone. He wonders out loud how the aspiring idol's reaction would look like if she figured out that he and Ultraman on the news being the same person until the person he expected, Moroboshi, shows up and gives a sardonic remark about the young man's latest heroism. Awkwardly putting his phone into his pocket, Shinjiro hastily denies such statement, rightfully arguing the act of killing someone weights heavily on one's heart, even if that person being an evil alien such as Alien Adacic on the other day. Their conversation goes sour when Moroboshi makes it clear that Shinjiro had taken the life of others regardless and there's no going back from that point, indifferent to whatever guilt the young man had.

In his apartment, Alien Igaru is checking on latest news pertaining Rena Sayama including the interview surrounding her encounter with a man in Ultraman-like hi-tech suit who saved her life. Noticing 'Buttr*****' showed up in the chat room with another of their rants which more heated and ridiculous than the last, Alien Igaru takes that as a last straw and contacts someone with a communicator of extraterrestrial design in his possession.

The atmosphere between the two doesn't go any better when Moroboshi brings Shinjiro to an unassuming alley between the buildings which brings them to the alien city, a community inhabited by aliens masquerading as humans. Underwhelmed at first by its rather mundane façade, Shinjiro realizes the community is indeed not like what it seemed to be starting from encountering a hunched, grumpy middle-aged man who examines him in rather intimidating manner before leaving, in which Moroboshi stated the latter being a disguised Alien Seppeku, aliens noted for being quick-tempered as much as good-natured. Travelling deeper into the community, Shinjiro is given a blood-red juice which also filled with a small, edible shrimp-like creature with a human-like eyeball by Moroboshi while interacting with three Alien Toriuses disguising as cheerful little boys despite the latter arguing their true form being larger than humans (he cites juveniles of said race being 3 meters tall). After a bald man with goatee bumps into Shinjiro resulting his holographic device to momentarily glitch and reveal a red alien head with multiple yellow eyes, much to the shock of the young man, Moroboshi finally explains that majorities of the aliens in the community can shapeshift into humans at will while the rest uses transformation devices to achieve the same feat.

Approaching a building leading to an underground arena which currently used as a gambling den, Moroboshi reveals the true purpose of their visit to the hidden community; SSSP is investigating recent serial killings which implied to be the work of an alien criminal which necessitating them to consult with an informant there. Watching an ensuing boxing match, the person Moroboshi and Shinjiro seek is revealed to be a muscular human male named Jack who lived alongside the aliens for a long time both as an information broker and champion boxer. The two meet up with Jack shortly after the latter's victorious match against Black King, a black reptilian horned alien with brutish physique, during which the informant reveals about certain recent news which possibly have something to do with their case. Jack then criticizes Moroboshi for his latest track records only for the latter shifts the blame to Shinjiro, startling the young man who realizes they are talking about the incident with Alien Adacic.

Jack's disapproval changes into curiosity upon learning the Ultraman from aforementioned incident and Shinjiro are the same person, more so with the knowledge of the young man being the son of Shin Hayata himself. As soon as Moroboshi left to take care of certain things, the informant comforts Shinjiro in the light of whatever troubles the former caused to him, aware with Moroboshi's bluntness made him hassling people to the point of them can no longer take it. Shinjiro confides his insecurities as an Ultraman to Jack, in which the latter suggests to talk to his father knowing the latter felt the same way throughout his fights.

Just then, Black King shows up to cause trouble without assuming a human disguise, much to Shinjiro's shock and Jack's annoyance. Their situation escalates when Jack reveals that one of Black King's friends was killed by the Giant of Light long ago and that Shinjiro's scent suspiciously similar to the latter. Luckily, Moroboshi shows up to discipline the brutish alien, prompting him to make his leave. Berating Jack for his perceived sloppiness, Moroboshi makes his leave prompting Shinjiro to after him, but not before reminding their informant to share his findings later.

Returning to human populace, Moroboshi informed his superiors about their findings so far as he and Shinjiro about to part ways. Shinjiro asked Moroboshi about the reason he dragged him into such investigation, but the latter's answer leaves him unsettled: As it turns out, Moroboshi was forced to do so under Ide's orders and that he resented the young man greatly thus indifferent regarding his competence as an Ultraman. Before leaving, Moroboshi sardonically advised Shinjiro that being able to do something yet chose not to for any reason is no better than a crime.

Later that night, against Kurata's warnings, Endo remains adamant in continuing what they left off in the scene of the crime. The wary Kurata demands his superior to explain why he got obsessed by the case in the first place, and the relented Endo replies that there's something he couldn't shake off there. Entering Takeo's apartment, the older detective finally finds the answer in form of Rena Sayama's bloodied poster which more significant than they initially believed to be. Just then, they encountered the hiding Alien Igaru nearby, leading to a wild chase culminating to the alien escaping from the detectives' grasp. It is through said chase Endo and Kurata finally understand why SSSP got involved to begin with: They discovered the stranger in the scene of the crime being an alien through the latter's superhuman ability to remain unharmed from leaping few stories below, outrunning both detectives, merely staggered when he got hit by a truck, and lastly his two pair of eyes.

Unknown to the detectives, Bemular watches the whole event from the sky above...

Anime and Manga Differences

• Some scenes are rearranged.
• Yosuke Endo and Kurata are introduced in this episode. The manga chapter they originally debuted in was already covered in the previous two episodes. The way they find out about the SSSP is also altered.
• Ide speaks to Edo about Bris' victims instead of Adacic's.
• The entire subplot line with Alien Adacic's bar-coded human victims is written out. Consequently, Moroboshi seeks out Jack to ask about Bris' murders instead.
• Shinjiro's conversation with Moroboshi on the SSSP base's roof starts differently. Here, he daydreams about how things would go if Rena Sayama found out he was Ultraman. In the manga, he is depressed after having to kill Adacic.
• Igaru, in the manga, is interrupted from watching Rena Sayama on television by a phone call, presumably from his "friends". In the anime, he uses a communicator device to contact someone instead.
• The entrance to the alien city is portrayed differently; being a disguised alley between buildings instead of a sealed portal underneath the SSSP base.
• The three Trias are given human disguises. Their true forms are never revealed.
• The scene where Shinjiro bumps into Bris is an addition, and was not in the manga.
• Jack's boxing opponent is changed from a generic alien to Black King.
• Jack is seen eating a snack after his match in the manga. Here, he is seen drinking beer instead.
• Black King replaces Red, who is written out of the series.
• Black King simply strangles Shinjiro. In the manga, they have a fight in the city.
• Shinjiro and Moroboshi's conversation after leaving the alien city ends slightly differently.
• Bemular watching over Endo and Kurata is an added scene.
