Trivia[]
- This episode has a sequel episode in the series Ultraseven: The Final Chapters, called "I Am an Earthling".
- This episode was selected as part of the Tetsuo Kinjo Scenario Masterpiece Collection and was published on September 29, 1984.
- The episode was actually proposed by Kazuho Mitsuta. It is said that during a drinking session with Tetsuo Kinjo, Mitsuta casually raised the question: "Are current humans, the so-called Earthlings, really the original inhabitants of Earth, or is there another origin?" Kinjo responded, "This topic seems like it could be an interesting story plot." This laid the groundwork for the initial outline of this episode.
- After the first draft was completed, Kinjo and Mitsuta had planned to meet at a beer hall in Shibuya for a script reading. However, there were two beer halls with the same name in Shibuya, which led them to enter different locations and miss each other. Kinjo went home, reread the manuscript, found it unsatisfactory, and burned the draft. He then rewrote a new script.[1]
- Several scenes were edited in the main episode, including the one where Dan and Anne return to the TDF Far East Base. In this scene, Dan pilots the Ultra Hawk No.1, while Anne pilots the Hydranger, with the team members anxiously waiting.
- In the scene where Dan rushes to aid the team members under attack by Nonmalt, the main sequence depicts only Dan running to help. However, according to the script, Anne actually accompanies Dan.
- In the final scene, where they gaze at the sea, the script reads: "Shinichi has transformed into a spirit and appears on the surface as Nonmalt's messenger." However, this line was ultimately deleted in the final version.
- In this episode, Anne is wearing a sweatshirt with the official logo of the popular band "The Tigers" printed on it.
- Based on Tetsuo Kinjo's Okinawan heritage, the controversial nature of the content of this episode is often raised, regarded as Kinjo's reflection and dissent regarding the modern historical relationship between Okinawa and Japan (the Yamato people).[2] However, in the 2011 documentary Thorough Verification! Our Ultraman Legend, Masazo Uehara's testimony stated that "Kinjo did not express emotions influenced by war (or his birthplace, Okinawa)." In other publications, other relevant production personnel and actors also denied claims related to the Okinawa issue and pointed out that this plot was actually intended to depict the "unbalanced" world from the planning stage of Ultra Q. Therefore, the content of this episode is considered to reflect Kinjo's incorporation of the concept of indigenous peoples into science fiction creativity.[3]
- Composer Toru Fuyuki chose the ocarina as one of the instruments in the music of this episode. According to him, one reason for using the ocarina is its connection to the flute, which has been a traditional instrument in human history for over 2000 years. He also considered that this choice would better align with the background of the episode.[4]
- At the 35th Tokyo International Film Festival held on October 26, 2022, to commemorate the 55th anniversary of Ultraseven, this episode was screened in 4K format.[5][6]
