Amagi (アマギ), aka Ultra 4, is one of the main characters of Ultraseven. He is the member of the original UG, who acted as the teams analyst of alien weaponry and computer expert. He and UG member Soga are the only two member of the original UG to not have his first name revealed.

Personality[]

Amagi possesses a mild, cautious, calm and decisive personality. Amagi seems to prefer his work at the Ultra Guard HQ as an analyst rather than field work, and at times lacks polish when it comes to preparing for missions, and has a fear of heights. Though he remains capable as a core member of Ultra Guard. In episode 28, it is revealed that Amagi suffered mental trauma as a child when a fireworks factory exploded in his home town that caused several homes to be destroyed, and thus developed acrophobia. Amagi's fears affected him deeply, and he was only able to over come them through Captain Kiriyama's leadership and encouragement from Member Dan, both of whom Amagi is very grateful too.

Amagi has also seen to have good humor, and will sometime tease his co-workers, alongside Anne.

Amagi hails from Nagoya and has been serving in UG for approximately two years. At the start of the series, he and the other members witnessed Ultraseven's appearance for the first time. Later, he and the other members received some good news that Dan Moroboshi had been selected as a new member of UG for his assistance in combating the alien, Alien Cool. The Invisible Challenger

During a patrol, Dan temporarily died due to an attack by Alien Wild, which left Amagi devastated. However, when he discovered that Alien Wild's special camera could separate a person's life and body, he studied the camera intently. He successfully restored the life of a guinea pig, so he attempted to scan Dan's body into the camera. Eventually, when the members of UG were in crisis, Dan was resurrected through Amagi's synthesis experiment and transformed into Ultraseven, successfully defeating Nurse. Later, Amagi successfully saved all 30+ victims trapped in the film through this technology.Fly to Devil Mountain

In the series, Amagi revealed that he witnessed a fireworks factory explosion when he was a child, which made him very scared of explosions. However, during a 700-kilometer bomb transport mission, the Alien Kill tried to ambush the transport team by setting up bombs and landmines, but failed to do so. The Alien Kill also personally engaged in gunfights and timed bomb attacks, but ultimately failed. Ironically, this helped Amagi overcome his fear of explosives. The 700 Kilometer Run!

Amagi has a very rare blood type, and in a concentrated surgery to save a girl named Kaori, he was manipulated by Dallie to assist with blood transfusions. After Dallie was eliminated by Ultraseven, Amagi and Kaori also recovered their health. The Flower where the Devil Dwells

During the largest invasion event in Earth's history, the Alien Ghose attempted to take over the planet, and Amagi was trapped in a capture bubble and controlled by them to manipulate the giant monster Pandon to attack UG. Later, Amagi was taken as a hostage and used as a mediator to communicate with the TDF.The Biggest Invasion in History: Part 1

Manipulated by Alien Ghose, Amagi warned humanity that Alien Ghose had deployed numerous underground drilling missiles. He claimed that if humans did not surrender, 3 billion people on Earth would be killed. However, the surrender resulted in humans being forced to live in underground cities on Mars.

As there was no response, Alien Ghose subsequently attacked several major cities around the world. But this only provoked the TDF's counterattack. When Ultraseven transformed for the last time, he raided Alien Ghose's base and saved Amagi. Ultimately, the Alien Ghose army was wiped out in a massive explosion at the base.

With Anne's help, Amagi and other UG members learned that Dan was the true identity of Ultraseven. At sunrise, they witnessed Ultraseven's victory and departure from Earth. The Biggest Invasion in History: Part 2

Trivia[]

  • He is portrayed by Bin Furuya, who is the first suit actor of Ultraman in Ultraman.
    • After the filming of Ultraman concluded, Tsuburaya Productions' acting coach, Satoru Niino, informed Furuya that "Furuya will appear as a member of the UG team in the next series." Furuya saw this as a sign of recognition from the production team regarding his performance.[3]
    • Art director Tohl Narita, who was responsible for designing Ultraman, initially believed that Furuya would continue his role as the suit actor for Ultraseven and began designing the character's appearance with Furuya in mind. However, when Furuya informed Narita that "this time, I’ll be appearing on screen without a mask," Narita was noticeably disappointed, even a bit disheartened by the news. Despite this, Narita quickly came to terms with it and remarked, "Since Bin will be wearing it, I'll design a uniform that suits you—something sharp and eye-catching."
    • Furuya later mentioned that Narita had told him that although Narita felt regretful that Furuya did not play the suit actor for Ultraseven, he was very pleased with Furuya's portrayal of Amagi. This made Furuya deeply moved and brought him to tears.[4]
  • According to Furuya in 2012, Amagi was one of the main roles to have its actor confirmed early in the series. Since one of the requirements for the UG team members was to be able to drive, he decided to get a driver's license immediately. At that time, a new driving school had opened near Toho. With about six months remaining before filming began, he used the time during the broadcast of Captain Ultra to go to the driving school and obtain his driver's license.[5]
  • According to an interview with Furuya, he has cherished many pleasant memories from his time working on Amagi. This was especially true during the filming of episodes 14 and 15, when the crew traveled to Kobe for on-location shoots.[6]
    • While portraying Amagi, Furuya made it a point to always carry a pen with him, prepared to sign autographs for children. This practice was inspired by his own childhood experiences of watching the Yomiuri Giants players during their practice sessions. When the practice ended, children would often ask for autographs. As a child, Furuya had not brought a pen and missed the opportunity to get the signatures, which left him feeling very disappointed and saddened. To prevent other children from experiencing similar disappointment, he consistently carried a pen to ensure he could sign autographs whenever requested.
  • Since Bin Furuya withdrew from the entertainment industry in the 1990s and 2000s, Amagi did not make a return in the Heisei Ultraseven series.
  • Since 2019, Bin Furuya has reprised his role as Amagi in various Ultraseven-related events and panel discussions.

  • In the special chapter "Morobushi Routine" of ULTRAMAN, an SSSP combat division member and subordinate of Dan named Amagi (天城, Amagi) appeared alongside another member named Furuhashi (古橋, Furuhashi) in the underground shooting training room. He is very likely to be a reference to the canon Amagi.
